  • Come tour our chicken coop, and we'll show some of our favorite must-have chicken coop features. Our coop uses the basic design of the classic Wichita Cabin coop, but we've incorporated some of our own innovations as well. We'll talk about how our coop features make caring for chickens so much easier!

Love the pvc through the foundation great idea. You should probably put a predator apron around your coop even with the cinder blocks there. I used 1" x 1" welded wire stainless steel fencing, didn't have enough for the front of the coop so decided to wait and get it in the spring. Luckly we also had a locking door to the coop. A skunk found the weakness and dug right under that spot we didn't protect. He just went in and ate the chicken food that was in the run and left, our girls were safe in the coop but it was a eye opener. Anyway you built a very nice small coop that would be perfect for most backyard chicken owners well done.

Thank you! We would definitely like to bury some hardware cloth around the edge of our run. We haven’t gotten to it yet because our run yard is surrounded by a chain link fence which so far has worked great to keep predators out. It is definitely on our list to get to though! We plan to expand our run this spring when we get more bday chicks, so we will hopefully be able to add an apron at the same time,

It’s a beautiful coop, the cinder block is a great idea. You did an amazing job with the modifications. Keeping the feeders off the ground is another great idea. Feeding the chickens with eggshells is very interesting.

Thanks for the tour! It looks like a happy chicken home. I would for sure do a few things differently in our coup and run if we had it to do over again. We have chicken swings and they don’t really use them.

We’ve been happy with it! I’m wondering if ours would use the swings…they do really love the stump and cinder block. We usually get quite a bit of snow, so they will most likely be stuck in the run for a good chunk of the winter.

It’s beautiful Jennifer 🤩 I love all the modifications you guys made to the original plans. Thank you for touching on the chicken wire vs welded wire-I see so many use the chicken wire and it just isn’t enough to keep predators out. Love the idea of using redguard and LVP on the floor! Genius 👌🏻
I’m going to share this with my husband so he can get an idea of what I’d like for our new coop 😊 We have to replace ours before winter. The thing is unfortunately getting old and falling apart.

great tour guys! We are just about to build our coop. Where you've done the cinder block foundation, we are going to do a concrete strip foundation, probably about 500mm deep - mostly to stop foxes getting in! They go nuts for chickens where we live!

That’s a great idea to keep out digging predators. Thankfully we haven’t seen any predator activity around our coop, but if we start to see animals digging around under our chainlink fence, we’ll be burying hardware cloth around the edges of our run. Our cinder blocks are sunk into the ground several inches which helps, but I know it’s not completely predator-proof for an animal that is a good digger. So far we’ve been good, I think because we have the extra layer of the chainlink fence surrounding the whole yard, plus the hardware cloth around the run. Good luck with your coop! Chickens are so much fun!

When acorns drop maybe temporarily put a piece of plywood on top to alleviate the sound issues. 🤷‍♀️ lovely coop! I like many things but particularly enjoy the 1) putty knife for scraping poop, 2) small dish for shells, 3)removable board for deep litter containment, 4) windows & 5) flooring for inside cooo. I’ve got to find a way to protect my interior walls from flying poop from behind perches. Like you I also need to make my perches removable. Mine are screened to the wall which won’t allow me to remove them for cleaning.

The plywood is a great idea! So far we haven’t had an acorn issue this year, but I’ll keep that in mind if they start picking up again! It definitely makes life easier to plan for easy cleaning in the coop!

Thanks so much for the tour of your beautiful chicken coop! We are in the process of building ours and appreciate any help we can get! I would love to see just what you do to wrap the coop for winter. We live in a elevated area in Texas that gets very windy and we'll need to address this when the time comes. Thanks again!!

Having chickens is so much fun! I’m glad the coop tour was helpful. I did post a video about how we wrapped our run for winter, but I’m not sure how well what we did would hold up in a windy area. It did work well for us, but we had a windstorm towards the end of winter that did damage the plastic some. I think that next year I’ll do a similar technique but with heavier duty plastic. I hope you love having chickens and that your coop turns out wonderful!
