5 years later I’m looking at your post. I have a 745 which I am just playing around with as a project. I installed 8 GB of Ram with windows 10 on an SSD. I’m still going through updates. I’m going to be looking at updating the CPU I noticed you questioning that fan under the hard drive. I don’t have that on mine because it is the larger form factor, but that cooling fin on the motherboard just under that fans gets super hot so it makes sense to have a fan... I need to add something.
The Optiplex 745 will run Windows 10, with a 2TB Hard drive, mine started with Vista, 2GB Ram, and an 80GB HDD, it is the fastest machine now that I have ever owned, I love it, and I only paid £10 at a junk sale., it came with everything original with it, even the monitor had a built in Camera all working well. Was a bit dusty but cleaned up nice.
I upgraded to win10 64bit installed a quad core cpu and a geforce 2gb gpu and it can run assetto corsa. Project cars with post processing enabled. 60 plus fps. Which for a dell optiplex 745 is pretty good. Considering it sat I'm my attic for years. Also. Change the direction of the cpu fan so it blows the hot air out the front
+Jay Mee Sorry I forgot to add the links in the description. Here is the link to the drivers for 64 bit Vista. I really only needed the sound drivers since it was the only thing not working after the Windows 7 install. ftp.dell.com/Browse_For_Drivers/Desktops/Optiplex/OptiPlex%20745/#Audio
Very interesting video! I own a used 745 incl. 4 GB RAM, Dual Core E2140 @ 1,6 Ghz. and just installed Win 7 Pro 64 SP1. While loading new content in any browser, there are some filckering parts at the top or the bottom of the screen. I also tried to install a GeForce GT 520. BIOS is 2.6.6 (latest Version). Setting it to "Auto" didn´t work, but the Cardrige works on different PCs. Screen says "No Signal" and stays black, but Windows starts. Dells driver list that´s linked in the comments lists a 2 BIOS iso files in the Video BIOS folder. Starting it opens the burning dialog. The Video Driver folder lists 4 drivers. How do I know which Dirver I should use and what to do with the iso files in the Video BIOS folder? Please help me
I got a dell optiplex 745 decktop I wonder if you know a good gaming cpu that us under 50 and a graphic card that is under 100 and how ram card does it would take thz
+Aviator Sproket You'll need to back up your files and choose the custom option during installation. Then you'll need to restore your files and reinstall your programs. The upgrade is only going to effect the hard drive or partition that the current operating system is occupying. If the external hard drive was just for storing data it is unaffected. i have a Dell Optiplex 745 with a Pentium D and 2gbs of RAM an 8gb HDD and no pcie GPU and the HDD has been formatted and has no operating system it has EM64T support but whenever i install windows 7 64bit and it installs up to the point where it has to restart itself for the first time in the installation process and once it restarts i comes back on with nothing but a black screen with no mouse or nothing just black and if i manually restart it while its on this black screen it comes back on and tries to start windows 7 as normal but it hasn't finished installation yet so it comes up with a message saying "windows installation not complete press ok to restart and continue installation" if i press ok it restarts and comes up again and if i just close the window or restart it manually it does the same and there seems to be nothing i can do i cant even launch with command prompt anyone know why? pls help.
Open the case, remove the HDD, and carefully check all of the capacitors on the system board. Optiplex 745 models are known for having faulty capacitors installed that burst later on. This can cause crashes, and random reboots and shut downs. A bad capacitor will have a bulge on the top, and/or be leaking a black substance.
You have to be real careful when you install and keep Windows 7. If you install the wrong updates, you'll end up on "potentially unwanted" Windows 10. Microsoft is doing this to all users whether they like it out not, so be extremely careful.

If I were to upgrade from Win7 32Bit to Win7 64Bit, would the data on my EXTERNAL Hard Drive get wiped?

2gb of memory is the minimum requirement. Maybe try adding additional ram. Has the bios been updated?
eTechTom i dont know to update the bios without an OS but the RAM might be the issue thanks
