Does Da Lat Have The BEST Hot Pot In Vietnam!?

  • Starting today off with a lady that has been making Banh Beo for over 50 years. Now, Banh Beo is more of central Vietnamese dish, but it seems that everywhere in Vietnam has their own version. This one was loaded with an orange prawn sauce, nouc mam, fried pork skin, and more. With super thick and chewy banh beo, it was no surprise that this lady has been keeping the locals and tourist full and happy with her Banh beo.
Now for the main show of the day, the lau bo. This wasn’t no ordinary Lau Bo as I got the Lau duoi bo, or the ox tail Lau. Something that I think we all could use to eat more, the ox tail is one of the best cuts of beefs you can get when you want a decadent beef filled meal. Of course this hot pot also has hot vit lon which I love to add to any hot pot, but unfortunately, this shipment of hot vit lon was a little too old for me.
Now, you know we have to finish with something sweet and of course I had something special for us. A che thai that is my favorite in all of Vietnam. Sweet, thick, coconut sauce, with durian, and an assortment of other jellies, fruits, and goodies. I like to take this to another level of deliciousness with adding the banh flan pho mai. When it mixes into the coconut sauce with the durian, it is something I have had to go back for time and time again.

When you talk about Christmas and how cold weather in Dalat is a perfect weather for hotpot, it reminds me of celebrating Tet in Hanoi. Eating the traditional sticky rice cake in Hanoi during February. Hanoi is known for its cold weather during Tet.
I really look forward to seeing you stay in Vietnam before and during Tet (Lunar New Year) and see how Vietnamese people prepare for Tet. During Tet, most cities will be less busy because people go back to their hometown to celebrate Tet with their family. I hope you could find a family to join in and celebrate a full Tet with the Vietnamese.
I notice you have just been here just a few months after this year's Tet. You really don't want to miss that time in the year when you travel in Vietnam because Tet is the Vietnamese's most important holiday in a year. It's not a one-day holiday, it's like a whole week off.
You could go anywhere to celebrate Tet in Vietnam. I want to see you eat the celebration feast at local home. I want you to see the atmosphere in the street a week before Tet. I miss seeing people buy food, plants, decorations to prepare for a new year. After that, you can go back to the States feeling proud that you have already known what it's like to celebrate Lunar New Year in Vietnam. Don't forget to eat that Banh Chung, Banh Tet during Tet. Those are my favorites.
Don't forget that Lunar New Year is not the same as January 1st World Calendar. You have to check the lunar calendar (Lich Am). Vietnamese people are always excited during a few days before Tet.
I could say that this holiday is a big one. It's like Christmas, New Year's Eve and Thanksgiving all together. It's a long holiday.
I can give you a certification for completing this mission. Without celebrating Tet in Vietnam, when you leave the country you will feel a bit regretful and want to come back again.

Max, if I haven't followed you on instagram, I would never know that you have been in Vietnam for a while, at least since early 2019, or maybe even before that, and you have been eating many places in Hanoi as well, before going to Saigon.
But as I said, it's really worth it to see how the local celebrate Tet in Vietnam. Really need to see that video from you.

To me Banh beo ba Huong is the best dish in Da Lat. I have come to Da Lat 3 times and each time I have to taste this dish. Wonderful 🙏
P/S: you can dip Banh trang in the hotpot. Gotta love it man.

The item in the banana leave wrapping, in my humble opinion, tastes like Bologna to me, minus the fish sauce, of course. I used to buy when there was a Vietnamese store in Geyer Springs area, which is now closed. Unless I go to Ft. Smith, I can't find any here in LR area. Eat extra for me, Max!

Fantastic eats today, Max! That banh beo had me drooling, for sure. Yummo! I'm not as big on lau like other people, but I'm a big fan of goi (the salad). And yes, using the rice paper cracker as a vehicle is a good idea to give you that crunch factor (like eating the tiny snails (com hen)). Aren't you supposed to cook the whole egg in the lau instead of cracking it into the lau? I'm pretty sure that's how it's done as you do not want to see the live fetus moving as it hits the hot water. And that che Thai is everything! I'm sure people who can afford it will add flan as well. :)
