  • I made a video several years ago warning you all about the dangers of storing your coins in PVC coin holders ( • Coin Collectors: This ... ). What I neglected to include in the last video is about albums. Coin albums are one of the best ways for Numismatists to enjoy their coin collections, but if you cheap out and buy cut-rate coin albums, you may end up literally destroying your coins.

    Those Dansco 7070s have gotten really high in price during the past year. I lost a $100 bid on one last minute, and ended up paying $130 on a buy it now listing. And I'm still pretty happy with that. I hope they either start reprinting them or someone else makes a high quality Type Set book soon.

    Now it all makes sense, here in the uk, we had the decimal coin set that was given to the public, it had what must have been a pvc packaging and since that set came out in 1971, the only decimal sets I’ve ever found are covered in gunk like you said

    • @PsychoGhost
      @PsychoGhost Год назад

      Mine isn’t covered in gunk so I presume my grandad, who gave it to me took it out the PVC cover for years and put it back in before putting it away in storage for 14 years then giving them to me so either way I’m surprised there not damaged

Not just bullion but anything that is physical , rare things physical value, outside of the stock market and banks. And so they come to one of the best people in the know of coins you. Cheers.

    New to coin collecting ? BCW for the win for me every time. Now that I have been collecting for more than 30+ years, all my collections are in PVC free albums.

    I also would say that if you forgo the album and (you may have mentioned this in a prior video) store your coins in the original packaging and in in flips and encapsulation, you can use a larger plastic box with the recycle numbers 2, 4, and 5; 1 and 7 use with caution and 3 and 6 avoid. 3 is PVc and 6 is the plastic that is least recyclable and found commonly used with egg cartons (my Mom stores her costume and precious metal jewelry in them. Fortunately no green slime but then again most are not fully silver or gold or just stainless steel or gold toned metal.)

    I used to store my coin collection in coin albums but as a coin collector newbie back then I didn't knew about the plastic's components all I know was it can protect your coins from dust and stuff, then when I learned about PVC damage I was like "uh oh", so I checked my coins and thank god there wasn't any greens on the coins but don't want this to happen so I went online and bought coin capsules instead because I heard they're air tight and more safe for coins.

    I have the cardboard flip, binders, and pages that can hold about 20 2x2 flips. I don't think that this is too expensive of an option. I have 3. It is how I store most of my nicer collection including my British penny collection (i need to find the British penny Whitman folder. I also have 1 dansco for my Lincoln pennies, 4 Whitman folders from a flea market, 1940s. The holes shrunk with age so I have to manually widen them. It is how I store my Indians, and my few mercs and rosies that I own. I also have a small strange album that looks like a whitman but just has pages with tiny holders. I use it for my canadian small cents. The more modern and not special coinage goes in bags based on country and for american stuff, by denomination.

    Hey Silver Picker! Great video, and it got me thinking... need some advice, I recently picked up a 2010 Fiji Taku 1oz silver coin, first year of issue in original mint packaging. It’s a great looking coin, but the reason I’m bringing it up is because the OGP seems to have all the characteristics of PVC. Being 10 years old it already seems to have some kind of halo effect on the obverse; it may already be damaging the coin. My question is.. should I break the seal and put it in a capsule or leave it in the OGP?? What’s your call?

    Cheap PVC albums were responsible for the destruction of many a fine coin collection. I use Mylar plastic slips for regular modern world coins, and encapsulate larger silver coinage. Its more pricey, but I will definitely thank myself in 10 years time. I have discovered, through experimentation, that decent jewellery bags are excellent for storing away lots of loose silver coins. Proper bank bags are cool as well for all that junk silver. Decent hard plastic Tupperware containers, which are microwave and freezer safe, make excellent storage containers for lots of loose silver coins, or other coins. Basically you have to be prepared to spend money. Going cheap is dangerous. You have been warned.....

    That is great, funny yet helpful, avoid Chinese junk like the plague. My mother bought me 2 chinese PVC albums in 1996 and I found them in my locker, never used thank God. All sticky and green now.
    Now its all Mylar everything, Mylar flips, Mylar pages and modern binders. No acid filled crap for my coins. Seriously I get quality Mylar flips for 20 cents a piece thats 13 cents American, who can't afford that, especially as most of my coins are worth $5 - $50 each and often more.

    • @King_BlueBalls
      @King_BlueBalls 2 года назад

      Coin will still get damaged, but it will take some time. (In a few months)
      The PVC will leach onto the holder and then will attack the edge of the coin. Then there will be green sludge on the edge of your coin
