Your advice is so helpful... It's always the most seemingly obvious advice that we need to hear.

I have actual goals now for the first time and its… so great. Get goals kids, they tell you what to do and put everything in context

This is excellent advice! In 2016 I read the book "The One Thing" and started implementing this approach to focus 100% on my career as an animation writer. Out of curiosity, I've just reopened my goal-setting document from 2016, and, to my surprise, I'm on track with most of the goals. The two I'm most proud of are "launching the RUclips channel" and "writing animated feature films".

Man thanks for the reminder! Made me check my list again and to evaluate them because it's been a while. Sometimes I get distracted by shinier stuff along the way while implementing my plans to reach said goals.

Don't be too hard on yourself, that happens to just about everyone and it's totally normal! Glad this video could be a reminder to you to stay focused on your checklist and achieve those goals😊

I’ve always struggled with have solid goals ._. It does feel like I’ve been riding on chance and opportunity so far. It’s actually been pretty good though so far, I’ve tried some things I never expected to do and actually like it. But still can’t picture myself in 10 years time solidly, other than to be a better artist.

My goal would be to be like yourself when I grow up. But I am already 45 so I guess I am screwed in that department :D Smart advice, thank you!

I have goals but I'm really struggling with doubts. I started to learn art with the goal of entering the animation or game industry when I was around 25 years old. It was a very late start unfortunately. I have just turned 32 and for the past 7 years I was working non-art related jobs while learning and making arts. I feel like I've come a long way with my skills but since I was taking on a lot of commissioned illustrative works, I still don't have a job ready portfolio for the area that I'm interested in which is visual development. I'm proud to look at my progress, when I started it was hard to imagine that I could have made money with my art at all. However, as I got older, now I feel like I'm not sure if it's worth it to continue to pursue my "dream"...If I continue to prioritize this goal over financial stability job security and even my personal life, even for 1 or 2 more years, would it really be worth it at the end? I'm not very optimistic about animation industry as it feels like artists are often under valued overworked and deemed very replaceable, and now especially with AI. I'm about to give up on the goal to work in the industry...and ngl I cried multiple times for it. I wish I had a mentor or someone I could talk to, especially about finance and job prospects...

It sounds like getting a mentor might be just what you need to help you answer your questions and concerns, and with your final push of getting your portfolio ready to send off to studios! If you haven't already, definitely check out this webinar all about mentors and how to find one that's right for you, and it includes a panel of amazing artists and creatives that offer invaluable advice on this topic: ruclips.net/video/ghh8gN2GjcA/видео.html
We hope this helps!! Best of luck to you as you continue on your artistic journey:)

@@BobbyChiu Thanks for the link I’ve just watched the video. I know that it’s on me for not reaching out or showing my works to potential mentors. I often felt like it would annoy people…maybe it’s a fear of rejection thing. It’s nice to hear the perspectives of other artists and creatives, or even the questions from the audiences who share similar concerns. I will try to find a mentor and get some advices before I decide if I should give it up, the thought of quitting hurts my soul, and I don’t want any regrets in the future for the decision I make now. Thank you for responding to me!

@@fifiapollo Reading your comment just makes me in cry so much bcs i'm actually having the same case here.. I've been drawing for like 7 years ever since in high school.. I remember I was so passionate first time learning it, I didn't really have much info about how I supposed to learn Art and fundamental of drawing and design probably.. Then I started open commission for portrait etc. I wasted years of just tracing a picture into drawing and didn't actually learn anything about Art. Now I still want to chase my dream of becoming an illustrator and animator but feel like I've missed the best timing of passion and can't decide to be serious in learning it too bcs I need to keep my financial stability.
So yeah I guess there're a lot of artists like us

@@mg-kf3jc I believe there are always ways to do what you love, but maybe not in the exact same way that you imagined it, that’s ok too. It’s very saddening to see how AI devaluated art, what took the artists years to learn and hone are replicated in seconds. In commercial art and businesses, do we really expect companies to choose humanity over profit? extremely unlikely. I got into art because I wanna tell stories, and it will be a lifelong passion whether I work for a studio or not.

make a list and then write the opposite on the other side. It'll start to describe your goal.
