    Ledger uses 2 chips to secure the keys. This means the chip cannot be overloaded to lever access to the keys. This is not possible with Trezor because that uses only 1 chip.
    Ledger supports more crypto assets than Trezor
    Trezor however is fully open source
    If you have the money, why not keep both a Ledger and a Trezor?
    You need to store your recovery seed phrase on permanent storage. Don't just write it down on paper, paper burns or can be destroyed by water etc
    One way is to etch or stamp it onto metal.
    Some ideas of storage medium are:
    Dog tags
    Metal washers
    Metal plate
    Never never ever ever store your recovery phrase online, EVER

    As shocking as Ledger’s security breach was, I think it’s somewhat disingenuous to conceal Trezor’s recent leak of customer e-mails and the ensuing phishing attacks. The leak might have not been as severe as Ledger’s failure but it’s still noteworthy.

    • @btsoc1397

      I dont recall ever using my email address with my Trezor, so im quite confused how there was even access to emails? Even if there was, knowing my Trezor was never tied to an email address, there's no possible data breach because it is a cold storage device.

    • @btsoc1397
      @btsoc1397 2 года назад +1

      Wait nvm, was likely emails from their order placed. Luckily I specifically made a burner email with Tutanota. Regardless, that just means that there is nothing about the wallet itself that is unsecure, just their website servers, which are inherently unsecure anyway.

    • @epultimast
      @epultimast 2 года назад +4

      @@btsoc1397 yes, you’re right. Also it’s "only" the e-mail address and these were "only" phishing attacks - I would claim that most crypto users would be able to spot a phishing mail, or at least be smart enough to not hand out their private keys.
      Still, it’s a mild inconvenience at best and could increase to a serious problem at worst.

    Just realize that Ledgers deteriorate over time. I'm not sure if it's actual planned obsolescence, but that last time I went to use mine the screen wouldn't work properly. I could tell the device was working, but I couldn't read anything on it because the character lighting was so dim that there was almost zero contrast with the background. Basically the battery was failing, or whatever converts the power from the USB port. Thankfully I have an extra device at another location that I've never used, so when I get a chance I'll go switch to that one. But I will use it knowing that it too will die in a few years. Be prepared.

    • @mat33
      @mat33 2 года назад +10

      You can lose 50 cold wallets and as long as you have your 12 to 24 word seed phrase then you can recover your coins. Your coins aren't "on" the cold wallet. They are on the blockchain and the wallet just allows you to have your own keys instead of having an exchange like Coinbase hold the keys for you. I was nervous about cold wallets, too. Learn about them and get one. They aren't that scary, just be sure the keep your seed phrase safe and secure. If you lose your cold wallet then you can recover your crypto and then move to a new wallet address to be extra safe. The stories of people losing their crypto from cold storage are user error and being careless.

    • @tensevo
      @tensevo 2 года назад +3

    Can u do a vid on best practices for buying and storing crypto on the Ledger? The most secure & safest practices? Like, Do u create a new crypto acct for ea transfer? How to u buy crypto from Ledger Live via Muun wallet (from ur phone).. Do u need to have Ledger Live on ur phone to do this?.. Ledger support sucks.. Once u get a Ledger cold storage wallet, no one gives advice on the best safest practices on how to use it.. & best places to store the seed words & the ledger itself. Can u travel w/ it? Or should it be empty when traveling internationally?

      No, the best security is not just open source, it's audited source
      The military does not use open source unless it's vetted and they roll their own
      Nothing wrong with closed source as long as it's independently verified by credible sources
      Open source just means more eyes viewing it which increases the statistical odds of an exploit being found, that doesn't make it more secure
      10 high quality reviewers analysing closed source could certainly be better than 20 less qualified people reviewing open source
      Just because it's open source doesn't make it secure by nature

    Hey Guy, great video! I have a question unsolved though. Could you restore a wallet created with Trezor to a Ledger device or viceversa? It would be as easy as just restoring the wallet in the new device using the seed right? I wonder if they both use the same amount of works, though. Thanks!

    • @Whale15
      @Whale15 2 года назад +41

      Yes. With your recovery phrase in hand you could restore your wallet on any device. To build confidence I recommend buying two separate devices and practice recovering like 20$. Try wiping one with a factory reset, then recovering the wallet. Try sending coins back and forth to two different wallets. Try making the same wallet on two devices. Etc. i did all this a while back and it makes you feel comfortable with cold storage as you get really familiar with the process. Just think of every scenario in which things could go wrong and run through all the scenarios. Same with seed phrase storage. It’s a big responsibility to hold all your coins but with rehearsals like these it allows for more peaceful sleep at night.
      Also reminder to factory reset/wipe any device you get; even after making sure it was from a credible source. Never use a seed phrase already on a device when shipped to you. Takes 5 min to reset, throw in new firmware, and write down a new phrase.

      Those are just front ends to access your wallets. Metamask is for ethereum only along with the virtual machines built along side it. Those include cronos/polygon/etc. Metamask can access solana or bitcoin or all the others.
