    I planted some dwarf Cavendish plants this summer and they look sooooo sad, but the stems and roots still look okay. It's so tempting to cut them down, since they look HORRIBLE!
    Thanks for this information!

    You should cut the flower off when you it can not produce the fatty fruit anymore. Those flower you can turn it to your food. Take off the red paddle until you see white and crunchy, slide it thin to put in your salad or cut it cube to make pork or beef soup. The Shoup will much better with some lemon drop, garlic leaf and chili. I am Cambodian.

    I bought an ice cream banana tree a couple months back. I have it currently inside the house and I live in zone 8A. It is nice to see what they do during the winter. I am wondering when is the best time to transplant mine back outdoors. I am waiting when nighttime temps dont get into the 30's I think would be best. It came with two Leafs and now has 2 more with another growing. Thank goodness for vaulted ceilings. ;-) Oh and french doors to get it out.

    I just cut down my two largest banana trees yesterday evening. They were close to producing by this spring. I initially intended to wait to even cut back the leaves until March but yesterday I noticed the center where it was putting new leaves out was rotting & decomposing. I also noticed how loses the trunks were and when I lightly pushed on the trunks with one finger at halfway, liquid would squirt out of the trunks fibrous layers. So I was pretty certain that they were in the process of dying off and trying to collapse like they do after harvesting.
    Hopefully I made the right choice and my observations were correct? The inner core of the worst tree was browning and not white with light green like when they’re growing good.
    Just curious if you can tell me if it’s likely they were dead?
    We will have to move at sometime this year and likely won’t be able to bring them (unless I can successfully dig them up for transport without any root damage). So I’m a bit saddened that we never got to where they produced for us.

    I’m just curious where you are located and how cold did it get last week where you are located. Last week I am in the panhandle of Florida south of Pensacola in gulf breeze about 0.5 miles from ocean. It got into low 20s for 3 nights with temps below 32 for 12 hours each night my have left the leaves on my bananas and wrapped from ground up to crown with a layer of frost cloth then bubble wrap.

      Hi Wesley, I live in zone 9a north central Florida, 7 miles from the beach. it go into the lower 30s for a few nights. A Little frost it is normal for Banana plants to brown. Do not trim them back till around April. You could cut off your Banana rack and bring them inside to ripen or cook them green. if you protected your corms they should all come back, some may not. The young sucker may or may not, depending on if you covered them. I try to cover all mine. Come to my FB page or group and post some pics. Later.

    I’m by the Texas coast (zone 9 a) and the lowest we got to was in the mid-high teens, but wind chill brought us down to single digits. I only have 1 ice cream banana, less than a year old but it was about 9 feet tall and no pups that I can tell. I tried wrapping the trunk. The leaves have dropped to cover the trunk and the top foot and a half is soft/squishy. I heard it’s recommended to chop off mushy bits. The trunk is firmer as I go down but it’s.. damp? Should I chop and if so, where?

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  Год назад +1

      Hi Iris, I always just leave the Banana plants alone and wait till spring to trim and fertilize. we are sure to get more cold spells before spring. if your Banana plant is ok, it will come back, if not then there is nothing you can do at this point. if the banana plant did not make it, the corm should shoot off some pups in the spring. just protect the corm. and make sure the ground is moist and not wet.

    So, if our spring has started and the banana plants are covered in dead leaves do we cut them to the ground or only down to where the stalk is green? Will it grow bananas on a plant from last year? The plants never produced. Some of the plants have 5 or 6 feet of greenish stalk, I mean, not beautiful but greenish.

    • @TheFrugalHugelGardener
      @TheFrugalHugelGardener  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, spring starts here in Zone 9A in April. I just leave them all alone till around the end of April and you will see all new green growth, then just trim off the brown leaves. (do not cut the plant trunk to the ground) just let it make a comback on its own.
