- Geoff Zanelli is a great friend of Film.Music.Media and gave us an amazing look into his scoring sessions for Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales that took place at the Sony Pictures Scoring Stage in September of 2016. The goal was to attend and take some photos to release with our planned All Access interview, but we also took a little video footage as well. We hope this raw and minimally edited b-roll/"fly on the wall" footage will give an educational and informative look into the scoring sessions of a major blockbuster franchise.
Be sure to watch our All Access interview with Geoff Zanelli as well as we go in-depth into not only Pirates but his entire career.

Consuctor: "Yeah so remember everything you learned in conducting class? Fuck that" 😂
As a cellist, I would be afraid of playing under this guy. I struggle follow his gestures
What do you mean?
@Caleb Vaughn-Jones. Agreed!! Where are the downbeats?
@@VFXCommander He isn't beating in time but rather just doing interpretive dancing, you can't tell what the downbeat, tempo or overall time signature is from his conducting.
Kaya's theme is amazing
Honestly, I feel like this film had the second best Pirates score.
1. At World's End
2. Dead Men Tell No Tales
3. Dead Man's Chest
4. Curse of the Black Pearl
5. On Stranger Tides
PianoGeek3 it's true
Curse of the black pearl had a great score but this list is correct in my opinion
Agreed!
Your rankings, sir, I'm afraid to say, are... 100% correct!
This is amazing !
Thank you very much for sharing this, you could imagine how great this is to a composer to have access to this footage :D
All we need right now is a complete score

@@paulmartinez594 my god thanks!!!
You're welcome!! c:
i so much would like to listen to more of the dialogs
As a musician, I am quite familiar with this process, and it is challenging, to say the least! The only "Edit Point" is the musical measure, and they are numbered. So if you screw up, the general rule is to go back at least 2 measures before and do it over! Major pain in the butt for everyone which results in monumental recording sessions and over budget production costs!
Wow. That "bang" at :16, when the lights go off, would have made me bit nervous if I was the engineer, or conductor, etc.
That's actually the sound of the lights turning off so no extra hum is recorded, happens before each take :)
Yeah, I can see that, now. LOL It's just so close to the downbeat, though! LOL Made me nervous. I studied sound engineering at Grove School in Studio City way back in '87, and we used to turn the AC on and off during a session. Having said that, I love these session videos. They're awesome.
does anyone know the name of the cue they are playing from 4:20?
Track 12 on the OST, "The Brightest Star In The North", this part can be heard around the 4min mark.
This music was so amazing......ESPECIALLY in the young Jack Flashback.....
I loved the movie and the music. Screw the haters.
Muito bom belissimo de se ouvir !!
great video! Thanks!
I don't get why is Blackbeard's theme used since he's not in the movie?
It's used when Barbossa uses Blackbears blade
what s the name of the blonde guy who is dirijeur?
Nick Glennie-Smith
wow they most know it ain't up to standard '' the Hans Zimmer ''effect is gone *_*
What a profoundly wasted opportunity this movie was. It's like a triple layer of rehashed score.
Hans is better
Much of the music from the previous films was written by this guy anyway.
Nowadays it's called "additional music".
This guy looks like he has absolutely no idea of the responsability he had in his hands when he was scoring this movie. The soundtrack sucked and ruined every great musical piece Hans made for the franchise
It ruined nothing. Even Hans enjoyed the soundtrack.
@@MindySaini hhh TU NO TIENES IDEA SOBRE LO QUE ES LA MUSICA PARA CINE O QUE ES MUSICA TEMPORAL...ALGO QUE LOS DIRECTORES TE PIDEN A TI COMO COMPOSITOR QUE TU MUSICA SEA MUY PARECIDA A LO QUE YA EL TE LO PASA CON POCO ANTES QUE TU EMPIEZAS A COMPONER TEMAS Y POR ESO TE SUENA COMO LA MUSICA DE HANS ZIMMER O CUALQUIER OTRO COMPOSITOR...GEOFF ZANELLI ES UN BUEN COMPOSITOR Y DE HECHO FUE EL HANS QUE LE RECOMANDO AL PRODUCTOR PARA ESA PELI, AMIGO. UN SALUDO
It was amazing! If you didn't know, Zanelli worked on the original music staff. He's been part of it since the beginning.
Hans is way better
John smith I was sad when I found out Hans wasn't scoring this film but Geoff did a great job in my opinion
That's because you think that when you read Hans' name he did all the music.
It's more than a decade than Hans is a Brand more than a composer, with many minions working for him and writing music in his style.
P.S. this is not even a secret, he openly says that on pretty much every interview.
@@ChristianIce And Zanelli was one of those minions! so he'd already wrote music for the pirates films before.
