If only a single floppy was installed MS-DOS was able to create a virtual floppy drive b: so you could use programs requiring two floppy drives or copy things between two floppies using a single drive, DOS would tell you when you had to exchange the floppies and even make sure you actually did it before allowing the program to overwrite or delete things on the wrong floppy...
