My shack is by necessity on a 2nd story and set back quite away from the edge of the house. If I were to use a ground wire to a grounding rod in the outside soil, the ground wire would be about 30ft. long. So I use the MFJ 931 artificial ground. It works as advertised. Sure, it’s kind of a pain. Not unlike using a manual tuner for each band. But it works pretty well as a compromise.
Excellent, hearing from you report. Great stuff. My son is becoming a commercial pilot and i used to do alot of hf , at one time. But we really connect with your videos. God bless you sir. 73.
EFHW is an antenna that does not need counterpoise at all. If there is a tree outside, that will solve the problem. Still trying to figure out the number, but MFJ has a window antenna. It is the same thing as that of a box with a whip socket on top, but additionally has a 45-degree angle mount to stick a whip out of the window (i.e. 17ft MFJ 1979). Alternatively, a Rybakov antenna works well on 20M and higher bands. Magloop could be a bit controversial in areas where peacemakers are common. For verticals, alternatively, aluminium door screen mash can be used.

I agree with you. The Mag Loop antenna sounds like the best choice for inside the Assisted Living home.

Holy cow! What base were you stationed at where they let you do that? What year was that? That's really amazing. Was the commander a Ham?
I have an MFJ-931 Artificial Ground but have never used it.
Maybe I can stave off ever having to go to assisted living by hitting the gym 3 days a week...
Thank you. N0QFT
