Wow, 3,197 peoples love this product and give positif reviews. For anyone new to the Roku world, I would recommend the Roku 3 over any other previous models mainly on it being so much faster to operate.
Just out of curiosity, when you "worked" for NBC, did you loose your ability to spell or is that not a requirement? Point in question "accept they were live news broadcasts..." when, last I checked, is should be "except". Or is "accept" the new "except" in the NBC office?
Actually, I've found PLEX to be the best way to watch RUclips videos on my Roku. What you have to do is install the MyPlex Queue Extension in your browser and navigate to the video you'd like to see via your computer. Once there, hit the toolbar button and the video (RUclips, Vimeo, etc) is added to your PLEX cue and viewable through Roku.
I really like the Roku 3. I don't have or want cable in my bedroom, and have a tv that's pre-smart tvs, so it's perfect for me. And it does have a RUclips channel-- if you had the channel on your Roku account before the falling out between Roku and RUclips. Streams 1080p flawlessly, and between Netflix, Amazon, youTube, MLB.tv, and live BBC, that's more than enough content.
can you use the Roku at the same time someone is using your computer? Or does your computer need to be free and not in use in order to watch things on your tv?
Ok,im confused a bit. If I want to watch actual TV,like shows that would air on,lets say, channel 18 at 10pm, could I still watch those or do i have to use cable still? Thanks
As of december 2013 Roku does support RUclips natively, as for the remote, you can pair older remote to your roku (TL remote work on Roku 3) and some universal remote works via IR so you need line of sight to work.
There hasn't been *official* RUclips support for Roku in a very long time. They yanked the channel when they couldn't figure out a way to provide ad content. Until about a week ago, you could access it through the Videobuzz channel, but they caught on to it and shut it down.
I don't seem to have problems using the iPhone app to type (backspace) with the previous gen Roku. I hope they fix this, it makes searching, typing, etc... so much easier.
Does anyone know if, when you access your USB drive through the Roku, does the Roku see only individual files or also folders. I was hoping that I could plug an external hard drive full of videos and play them with the Roku 3, but if it doesn't organize them by folders, then it won't help much. Anyone with information would be incredibly helpful! :D
Just bought the Roku 3 to replace my old Roku XD|S (2010). I somewhat disagree on Norm's conclusion that if you have one, you won't need another. The upgrade was worth it for me since I cut my cable in 2010 and I have a 2006 dumb Samsung 1080p. The old XD|S had glitches launching apps, was very slow rendering thumbnails and crashed frequently if I try to play or rewind a HD video. Roku 3 was fast with no crashes so far plus adding micro-USB for cache was a bonus. I happened to have 4Gb from old cellphone that did the job I was always able to get RUclips through a private channel for Roku since the beginning along with my profile. Now, there's an official app for it but it's only a matter of time before there's ads. Tested use to have an app on Roku before the split-up. I still have the icon on my channel. It's abandon app now. Here's hoping Tested gets a channel on Roku. Giant Bomb is on Roku and not WD which is why I didn't purchase it. Though it was still usable, the XD|S was always crashing at least once a day requiring a reboot. Sometimes, the software doesn't work and I had to physical unplug it to get the reboot to happen. The "delete" character glitch wasn't there but the iPhone app is clunky. No landscape mode. You can choose button or swipe. Swipe mode needs work. Good review, Norm. I miss the old days.
OK, I am a certified Roku fan, prefer it to Apple, and mind you, between 2010 and now, I've bought 8 (eight) Rokus from amazon. That is very good. They sale it on: #amzn.to/1fOXpAi
Blame Comcast for trying to extort cash from the makers of the Roku for the absence of HBO Go support. This is the same reason that you'll not find HBO Go on the PlayStation either; Sony refuses to pay Comcast. Microsoft, playing a bit of the underdog, has coughed up the dough to Comcast for HBO Go support on the 360.
I returned mine for no HBO or Disney support. It was missing Plex and Netflix features I cannot live without, for example it plays cartoons one at a time. Chromescast plays next video in series on Plex and Netflix.
RUclips was actually just added in December (yaaaaaayyyyyyyy! :D) I have the roku 3 and it's the best streaming device ever!!! I am subscribed 2 comcast but idk if it supports comcast now. Maybe...
Only a matter of time before they make us watch ads like on desktop. The private channel app from Nowhere had no commercial ads even on videos that normally had them.
Mine is a little brutal with the freezing up....save your receipt in case you don't like it. I would still have to keep it as a media player, as it can play any kind of movie out there basically through the USB drive. I dont think so on the RUclips HD, I have the lastest firmware, and its still not accessible
If you want youtube on your roku box just go to your account page on roku.com and click add channel and in the place where it ask you for the channel code, just type in B8VVK. Works on my original roku box, so it should work for you on yours.
The Roku 3 can do more then even what's in the video , not only can you play RUclips with third party apps(like Playon, twonky,VideoBuzz,) , but I can also play any video format from my computer with some of the Roku apps , like Plex,Playon and more. You do a google search for Private Channels and you get a whole bunch more stuff you can do with it. Now let me plug in a usb flash drive with my family photo's and presto you have a nice screen saver of your family :) .This is not just a stream box with a few apps , this thing now has over a 1,000 and growing everyday.Oh and the Roku app for your phone will also double as a remote plus steam your music/photos from your phone right to Roku. Merry Christmas all :)
Only a matter of time before RUclips makes us watch ads like on desktop. The private channel app from Nowhere had no commercial ads even on videos that normally had them.
I just got Comcast and found out when trying to connect my Roku that Comcast would not allow me to use my Roku.. HOW freaking backwards! I'm paying for HBO and HBO Go yet I can't watch it where I want to? Just stupid! Also $110/month doesn't even get HD broadcast quality for local channels. Comcast is a total ripoff!
I have for previous Rokus they work awesome for the cheaper price. just as fast. the interface is fast enough. if they wanted to improve, add a keyboard to input in search faster. no RUclips? definitely not an improvement. previous versions better
Merry Christmas :D and I heard that roku can now get RUclips as a main channel! exciting news considering I got mine today lol
Seems like you guys finally found a video format you like. Cheers.
Awesome Review man, one of the best I have bumped into a long time. Keep up the good work
Great review. You just convinced me I don't need a Roku 3. Thanks!
*****
Even if it was FREE it's a POS.
That was a great review, and exactly what I needed to know about the roku3.
I just watched Last Action Hero myself. Movie held up way better than I expected it to. Jingle All the Way though... man, what a trainwreck.

Why do you have a drawing of frank from 'American Pickers' in the background? Maybe it's actually just the guy from tool time...

My Roku has problems connecting to the Hulu and Netflix servers frequently. It often cuts out in the middle of shows.
Forget about satellite tv and cable tv charges. The Roku 3 was something I would never see in my lifetime.
Best price here : goo.gl/iv45Lp

The lack of RUclips, and MP4 video file support was a killer for me. Went with the WD Live. It's pretty slow navigation though.

Are there any sports packages/channels like ESPN, Foxsports on this device?

Is there any live channels on Roku 3 +?
Can you guys review the new Asus Cube/Google TV box?

It does have youtube... maybe it is updated more recently.
I love these tech reviews. Cheers Norm.
Cool. Can the Roku-3 support a 2.0 flash drive to view video files?
Great question,... Trying to figure that out as well. Any luck from your side Roger?

can i connect my laptop to the roku , like to see my laptop screen on my tv ?
How on earth do you lunch a media player without RUclips support?
Can you download apps and games on a Roku device?
They have now added RUclips, so that's not an issue anymore
Neat review, though I think it is rather silly they don't have youtube!
Just bought the Roku 3 to replace my old Roku XD|S (2010).

Does it have a web browser?
why would I want one if I have a computer or a smartphone?
You said it didnt work on Comcast
Which equipment plays the best MKV files from any player you tested before ?
The Roku 3 has the fastest and most fluid OS on the market, nothing can touch it.
I have 2 Roku 2 XS boxes, and they are great for Netflix
will pthis play .avi / .mp4/ .mkv files?
you can easily access youtube if you use twonky - search in the iphone app, beam it to your tv
does it support twitch tv?
I have youtube on my Roku XD. When did they remove it?
Tom Nelson They never did
Can I download vudu movies if I put a SD card into it?
Get Playon for Roku and you can stream all your files to your Roku from your PC plus it has RUclips.
What version of HDMI is on it?
OK, I am a certified Roku fan, prefer it to Apple, and mind you, between 2010 and now, I've bought 8 (eight) Rokus from amazon.

How do I stream RUclips on Roku 3? (latest model)
This video is a few years old RUclips and hbo go is supported
kamil douglas very old!!
thanks for the review norman..good stuff
Thanks for the review. Now I know there is no reason for me, personally, to buy this. Roku needs some serious work if I'm ever going to buy one.
Nothing better than headphones for your TV if you have a baby in the house!! :)
Does anyone knoe if you can use the roku media player without internet using an external hard drive full of videos

I will stick to storing all my movies songs tv shows on my 4TB western external until the perfected these media players
If only I had a bunch of extra money, I would buy all these things I don't need
No youtube app on Roku 3? Then, it is a no buy! Thanks for your review.
It is on there
You Tube IS available now.
I'm going to tell you right now. That interface isn't nearly as snappy as he's showing.
It plays RUclips now! :-)

Subbed. Good review.
It now got RUclips!
Glad Your um... Testing stuff again!!
No RUclips and no HBOGO for Comcast users... This is what happens when giant companies fight, the consumer looses.
3:05 Damn nature, you scary!
Check out that youtube thing again
because i watch youtube everyday on it.
Kem Bailey its been updated since this video was uploaded
Use a passphrase.... WEP or WPA. I suggest the latter.
The plex app is amazing.
Boxee blows this out of the water.
you can use RUclipse now

budrowilson Can the latest Roku set stream RUclips like you describe? Anybody tried it?
sounds like junk to me
Excuse me, but are you a pro at making videos and directing movies or something? I don't think so. Take your judgement elsewhere.
I got mine for free XD
The Roku 3 seem like a downgrade to me.
Wist
Comcast fail again
So basically its a useless piece of junk :P
