    Worth noting here that in DR Boost (Dynamic Range Boost) mode or using an older style GH5 battery, you can only go up to a maximum of 60fps. So to access the frame rates in this video you will need to switch that mode off and use a BLK22 battery or they will be greyed out and inaccessible. SSD recording is also capped at 60fps, so you will need to be recording to the camera internally.

    Steve, I really appreciate your videos on the GH6. I just received mine this week. My last GH was the 3 so I have a lot to learn. I would love to see a video in regards to how you would set up the custom buttons like the 2 on front for different film sets, such as run and gun vs interviews vs weddings and so on.

      Thank you, I am glad you are finding them useful. I actually like the default enhanced focus magnification shortcut on the front and I have been setting the other one to do one-click histograms or waveform monitor. I think for me they are only useable for interviews and locked-off shots because I use a gimbal or cage for run and gun and those buttons will be mostly inaccessible. Nice to have though.

    • @stevelitton
      @stevelitton  4 месяца назад +1

      No problem. Glad you found it useful 👍 You can record 422 in LongGOP or All-Intra. All-Intra is slightly less compressed but they are both MOV files considered as delivery formats. Whereas ProRes is is a less compressed workflow codec for editing, so it will run faster. Its a bit of a trade-off as the bigger files run better in editing suites but take up more space on cards and hard drives. If your machine struggles with previewing the files whilst editing you can use proxies.

    I have a daft question that I can't get my head around. I'm after the highest quality bitrate codec at 4k shooting 120fps. And there are a few choices of either 25fps or 50fps with Variable Frame Rates.
    I'm guessing that 422 10Bit all intra is out of the question for 25fps. But for some reason I can get 422 10bit for 50fps Variable Frame Rate
    Which codec would you suggest at 4k to get 120fps buttery smoothness using Variable Frame Rate?
    And would I even notice the difference between 420 and 422 10 bit with my little home projects shown on my RUclips channel?
    My brain hurts thinking about this.

    • @stevelitton
      @stevelitton  2 года назад

      Not a daft question at all. You won't get All-Intra beyond 50fps currently. But that's not to say that using 420 Long GOP will be bad, I find it looks really good, especially in comparison to older cameras like the GH5. All-Intra at those higher frames rates would be really intense on the camera and card but who knows, maybe it will be added one day. I tend to use the 4K 100fps HFR mode as that gives you sound and the ability to slow your footage down to 25% of the original speed on a 25fps timeline. You can shoot 422 10-bit All-Intra or Long GOP straight out of the camera at 25fps without VFR. You may be missing it as not all the All-Intra modes have the 'H' next to them in the menu, that is only the ones with the really high bit rates. I personally tend not to use VFR unless I am looking for a really high (or low) frame rate that is unachievable outside of it. Hope that helps.

      @@stevelitton Hmm, 100fps with sound. I'm guessing that the Achilles Heal is it's not auto focus?
      But still 100fps is good.
      Personally I prefer all-intra for recording, even if it works the camera and fills up SD cards like they are going out of fashion. The files play nicely with my PC and Resolve when editing. The RTX 3090 helps with scrubbing 4k at silly speeds compared to LongGOP.
      I thought I had my camera set to 4k 422 10 bit all-intra 25 FPS as the best bit rate possible rather than ProRes. I save that codec for my Ninja.
      I was hoping to do 4k 120fps in camera because my Ninja wimps out at 4k 60fps.
      All these questions for a hobby where I get tens of views 🤣🤣🫣
      Just walking the dog but when I get home I will follow your sage advice.
      Cheers

      Hi, did you check that you have DR Boost (Dynamic Range Boost) mode switched off and you are not using an older style GH5 battery, as you can only go up to a maximum of 60fps. So to access the frame rates in this video you will need to switch DR Boost mode off and use a BLK22 battery or they will be greyed out and inaccessible. You also will not be able to do this over SSD as that is limited to 60fps. Hope that helps.

    At least the Panasonic is giving good hints to, why you can't engage certain options or modes, when you to engage them, while they are greyed out. Got mine about a week and a half ago, but haven't been able to play fully with it yet, as my CFExpress card still is in the post and I've had to make due with whatever I can either record to a V90 SDcard or the Atomos via HDMI.

    • @stevelitton
      @stevelitton  2 года назад +1

      Sorry to hear that. You should be able to access 4k 120fps just with an SD card. The only restrictions on your SD card should be high frame rates in All-I and ProRes options. Make sure you have the following settings
      - Rec. File Format set to MOV
      - Rec Quality set to C4K 25P 420/10-L
      - VFR mode switched on and turned up to 120fps
      In the PAL setting, this will give you 120fps but not with continuous autofocus as it is using VFR, although you can single press for autofocus. The highest you can go to in PAL with continuous autofocus is 100fps. If you want 120fps with continuous autofocus you would need to use the NTSC camera setting and use a base frame rate of something like 23.9 if that makes sense.
      It's always tough moving to a new camera, I have literally spent hours setting mine up the way I want it. What is it specifically you are not liking about it?

    *** this message will interest GH5/GH5II users who try to use the batteries of those models on a GH6 model ***
    There is one important thing to know if you want to set the VFR like you want as described in the GH6 manual. You need to use a GH6 compatible Panasonic battery with a minimum of 2200 mAh.
    Under 2200 mAh you will be very limited with the VFR, ...and also with the Rec Quality and the USB/SS connection.

    Hi Steve! Thanks a lot for your videos! Let me ask you a question. How can you play a clip in camera shot at 100 fps in slow motion? Is that possible? Really appreciated!

    • @stevelitton
      @stevelitton  2 года назад

      For the camera to play it back in slow motion it needs to know the base frame rate. So it can playback in slow motion in the camera if you are using VFR as the base frame rate will be set to 25fps or 50fps. But if you shoot something like the 100fps in the HFR mode then it would just play it back at that frame rate or as close as the monitor can handle. By shooting in VFR you lose some features like continuous focus and audio. Hope that helps.
