I have driven 3 times Skippers Road, very stressful, especially the devil's elbow, or when you cross a bus and you take the extern side of a curved road section . Insurance does not cover here for rentals, but it is not a problem. The only risk is to fall 100 meters down on the rocks, you will not be bothered with insurance .. you will not have any problem forever

I’ll never forget when I was on a white water rafting trip and our guide had to drive a big bus with a trailer behind on this road. At one point we only had 3 wheels on the road, and at another we encountered someone who had to back up to let us by and I am not exaggerating when I say their back tires were a foot from backing off the mountain. I legitimately thought they were going to die

Like a bloody highway now. First did it in the 60's in my old '62 Landrover before the road was properly maintained. Thanks for the memory.

Drove there and back with my 2002 MB Sprinter. Mirrors were scraping just past the bridge rails. Scary as but I took my mum and brother there too with my Subaru Legacy AWD. For some reason my brother did not want to drive?

Just checked with Open AI and it appears this is not NZ’s most dangerous road. Yes vehicles are uninsured on this road, but the most fatalities? It is not.
State Highway 2 (SH2) between the cities of Tauranga and Gisborne has been identified as having the highest rate of fatal accidents in New Zealand. The section of the highway between the towns of Opotiki and Wairoa has been particularly dangerous, with a high number of fatal crashes occurring there in recent years. The New Zealand Transport Agency has been working on safety improvements to this section of the highway to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities.
