Absolutely awesome video mate, watching this makes me want to come back to Nz more and more
Cheers! Glad you enjoyed it!
I came to NZ in 2004 from the UK on a six month visa but fell in love with the place and stayed illegally for almost 10years, I did the Skippers canyon in my 4WD Isuzu Rodeo campervan. if you go again make sure you visit the cemetery and read some of the gravestones and if your anything like me it will bring tears to your eyes reading about the children who either drowned in the Shotover or died of diseases which in those days were usually fatal, I am back in the UK now and dream of returning but at 74 years old with heart problems its unfortunately just a dream. Thanks for the video it brings back memories of your wonderful country.
Don’t blame you at all! Will defo have to head out to the cemetery next time - we were pressed for time the day we were out there - and didn’t want to be driving out in the dark! I can imagine some of the stories would be hard to read though - whole lifestyle out there must have been very harsh - it’s remote even today. Glad you enjoyed the video!
That's a shame you can't return but at least you had the time you did and the memories for the rest of your life.
Excellent stuff guys keep it coming just subscribed :)
I’ll never forget when I was on a white water rafting trip and our guide had to drive a big bus with a trailer behind on this road. At one point we only had 3 wheels on the road, and at another we encountered someone who had to back up to let us by and I am not exaggerating when I say their back tires were a foot from backing off the mountain. I legitimately thought they were going to die
The hut is called Balderson's cottage. It is difficult to read but that is whats carved on the sign outside. Was built by a couple that wanted to live "close to civilization" haha these day's it is a DoC hut that you can stay in, if you like dirt floors and things living in the roof haha
Close to civilisation eh... sure 😂 Guess compared to the township it’s much closer! Cheers for the info, was curious as there wasn’t anything obvious there. Doesn’t sound like the best place to spend the night haha
You guys need to do a collaboration
Watch this space!
Last couple trips into skippers that Ive done were in a rental Yaris, and a Lowered Celica GT4. Its generally a good road. Just the climb at the end after the bridge is a bit lumpy for low ground clearance so we parked up and walked the last bit. Great little trip, will do it again next time I'm down in something more suitable.
Your" amazings! on repeat " are your deep appreciations of the landscape thru your PHOTOGRAPHERS HEART MIND EYES AND SOUL.... which is amazing just in itself !!
Maybe there's a poet in you somewhere also!! ..
If you get hold of an old copy of that book I mentioned to you from a library, “beyond the skippers Road“ by Terri McNicol. That had wonderful original maps inside the front cover showing all the tracks and all the different mustering huts. Just wonderful to read those old books. Mona Andersons book about Mount Algidus station over the Wilberforce river is legendary. “A river rules my life“
I have been meaning to hunt it down for a read - be amazing to learn more about the history out there!
So cool to see you guys out exploring my local tracks 😁
So much to do around there eh - a week wasn't long enough!
great video!! new zeland is beautiful
Cheers! You sometimes forget it living here - but it sure is!
Great Video, I seem to remember someone i knew at school (it's been a while since i was at school) went to the station beyond skippers and married the owner/manager just a gut feeling I've not been in there but hey what a wonderful place
1st keep it up u make amazing videos
Cheers Stan!
Planning a South Island trip for later this year and so glad I’ve come across your channel. Thanks. This will definitely be on our list to visit.
Did you go?
@@cameronlee2678most definitely. Been twice now.
Awesome video, enjoyed every second. The colors where just amazing...
Cheers Marcus! It was way prettier than I expected for winter - so much contrast in the landscape!
beautiful place
Another awesome video, well done guys.
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing this adventure. Heading down that way in a few months.
Glad you enjoyed it! You'll have an awesome time - so much to explore in the South Island!
Nice one guys 😎👍🇳🇿
Cheers Phil! Such an epic place down there
@@OverlandNZTV would love to go there one day 👍🤞
gostei muito do teu vídeo. meu sonho imergir assim na natureza e estabelecer uma conexão íntima com os elementos. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I should have added that it was a photo of the bridge at about 10.18 into the video. At that time the bridge was still closed and only reopened in around 1992.
The driver of our minibus (I'm not even sure it was 4x4) was parked further back on the track, and would not venture on to the bridge.
Thanks for sending the photos through - will reply to your email shortly - they look amazing though!
Oh wow, didn’t know that it was closed - though I’m not too surprised - it’s a crazy bit of engineering eh
I don’t think you generally need 4WD to get out there - was very sloppy when we did it in the middle of winter - were glad to have it!
Wonderful editing (handheld/drone). How much traffic did you encounter going the opposite way on Skippers Canyon road leading to the bridge? I assume the road is wide enough for cars to squeeze past each other in most places. Clearly not in some! How did it go? I'll be driving it in early January. Thanks.
Cheers Peter! This was filmed right as we level lockdown - so there was no one around, I think we saw one other car all day - and that was at the township. But yeah, defo' wide enough in spots to let others pass, just a matter of going slow and being prepared to stop. Nice! I'd love to head out there in summer - the greenery looks stunning. Have an awesome drive!
How was it?
It will be a gold miners hut
I definitely didn't know about this track but now ill make my way from wellington one time to do it
So much to do in the Otago area - well worth a trip down!
@@OverlandNZTV awesome! Sadly my 4wd I brought from a dealership turned out to be a lemon so I only got a honda crv! Anything okay for that? Its lifted with snorkel
Ahh man that's not ideal! The CRV would get out to Skippers no worries in summer (we needed 4WD to get back out, apparently it's not normally that slippery) - Thompsons Gorge and Hawksburn Road should be all good in a CRV too, we passed an Audi A6 on Thompsons!
@@OverlandNZTV oh wow okay sweet! Thanks for that! I was getting a proper 4wd to join you guys but sadly not the case ill need to save up again!
looks bloody awesome man, im going to be doing it for the first time next month!
Is it a one way road?
i would hate to meet someone coming the other way
Cheers Charlie! It’s an amazing spot down there! Nope, two way - wouldn’t want to meet people in certain places there eh! Well worth the trip out there though - we didn’t see anyone else all day
@@OverlandNZTV cheers man, goodd to know! i cant wait
I have a photo taken from the same spot around the first week in December 1979. Can I contact overland NZ with more info (and the photo)
Great journey guys.
Must be awesome without all the overseas tourist's in the way.
How long did it take to drive up from Arthurs Point ?
What kind of Drone are you using. It takes some amazing images.
It was weird - we saw very few other people the whole trip - both nice and sad at the same time. Though was cool being the first vehicle out to Macetown - got to crunch all the ice 😅
Always hard to judge drive time when we're filming (takes 3 times as long) - but Skippers is about an hour from the start of the road
Using a DJI Mavic Air - does the trick eh! Took a bit to figure out how to get it to look good - the settings out of the box were a tad hard to work with
Gob smacking.
It's such an amazing spot in there!
What month was it during your visit?
Was around the middle of June 👍
Music is too annoying so not watching. Would have been good vid otherwise
