OverBoard make an excellent waterproof TrekDry backpack with proper shoulder, chest and waist straps. I use one for my DSLR with the camera and lens inside a (homemade) foam tube inside the backpack. The backpack is made of tough reinforced PVC tarpaulin, is totally waterproof and floats too!
Thanks, another great video, you can tell you both worked as professionals in filming and camera work. Very polished. If you don't post again before Christmas have a good one.
Great information on the USB C differences, Thank you for explaining the differences in performance. Have a great Christmas and happy Sailing next year
According to Mel and Vicky at UGOwear, they next style bag will be a sling bag. We use ours for laptop carry and intend to use it to "ditch" if necessary, but for my small cameras and accessories the WANDRD 6L sling is my favorite.
@ I’m nit sure they’ll be any better. I just got it and am hauled out in Virginia. I won’t really be able to put it through its paces until next winter/spring in the Bahamas. 🤞🏻
The gel coat on my old boat was completely gone. I used Poliglow on it and got a shine that lasted 2+ years. It’s an acrylic. Clean boat thoroughly and wipe on 5-6 coats. It’s wonderful for when waxes just don’t work anymore- fills in the porous gel oat at the microscopic level
Did you have to buff out all of the old oxidation or could you just clean it off with a towel? What happens after 2 years? Does it start to peal and you've got an even worse mess on your hands?
Great video and awesome suggestions...the Quarter Master app really intrigues me. However after many decades of sailing and accumulating "stuff" it would be a challenge to get it loaded into the app! 😂😂 Amazing what we accumulate over the years! Cheers and Merry Christmas Mike and Ally S/V Bears Mistress II
Hello, publisher of the app here. The process of going through and counting everything you have can be daunting at first. A strategy we have seen work with many users is to inventory a section of the boat at a time. For example, on one day inventory everything behind the port settee, and on another day inventory the freezer. We hope that you will find our app useful.
Hi , we have had some different opinions before, now I still have a question that you guys have real experience in. After a lifetime of sailing on all kinds of boats, my wife and I are planning to spend most of our lives on a boat within two - three years. I don't want a “production” boat, rather something like a Contest, Wauquiez, Moody ... My question now: how do you like your long keelers. And what are the advantages and disadvantages. Taking into account that you are more silent than sailing. And outdoor space is very important for us. Thanks in advance for the beautiful vlogs, even if I sometimes disagree. 😇
Much of these things are personal wants and needs so different people will have a different opinions. You ask how we like have a boat of Fair Isles design and the answer is we wouldn’t change it for the world. The reason for that is simple. Comfort. I could say comfort and safety but to be honest possible to be as safe in a well maintained boat like the ones you are suggesting if not some of the more flimsy production boats. We are not sailing high latitudes so we could get away with sailing a boat with a big cockpit, faster keel shape etc etc but to be honest the times we wish we had a boat like that are very few and the times that we get caught out in nasty sea states / heavy wind we are very very glad to have Fair Isle. It’s not just the extremes though. We are about to set off on a 800 mile passage North up to the Caymans from Panama for instance and we know we are liable to be bashing into heavy seas for the last few days. This is okay on Fair Isle, on a boat that slams, even a tiny bit, this would be hell! We often come through difficult passages and meet sailors who have just done the same thing who have tails of how awful it was. We always look at each other and think we were fine, often having been playing cards in the cockpit and doing things as normal, it makes that much difference.
As I have said before the best solution for correcting a chalky Hull is to have it professionally wrapped. My blue hulled Nimbus was covered 4 years ago and looks as good as new. Only use the very best marine grade vinyl such as 3M or Avery Denison. You can also have clear self healing panels put over the wrap where your fenders are located for extra protection. When done you will never have to compound or polish it again!1
I'm not convinced a wrap would get down into the indented lines we have on Fair isle. Some people have said they can get wrap to do down into the dip but most say it will come out at some point.
If you're forced to anchor in a harbour known to have lots of junk at the bottom then yes I agree a conventional trip line might be better, but to be honest we just avoid those places. If you do get stuck then at 880Lb breaking strain you can give a pretty good pull with the Vision anchors line, but I've had great success using the Ultra ring for a properly stuck anchor, never let me down. There's a video showing it on our channel
You put a lot of work into buffing out your gel coat, but it sounds like you're back to having a lot of oxidation. Have you found anything to repair it or do you think you'll eventually just have to paint it? Another commenter said that "Poli Glow" worked very well for him and was easy to apply. (EASY... easy... always like to hear that word...) I sure admire how well you keep up your boat. I hope you had a good Christmas. Fair winds.
Yes sadly I cannot find a way of keeping the topsides good, the gel coat is too porous now. I’ve researched Poli Glow, it seems to get very mixed reviews with some people saying it also doesn’t last and it then difficult to strip off. We’ve decided the paint, I’m researching different types now.
@@svfairisle Thanks for the reply. I'm going to have to do something to my 1985 sailboat one day... There seems to be several good paints to choose from. Every crowd seems to have their favorite.
With the anchor marker , I love it but I would be concerned with someone getting fouled in it and lifting your anchor from the bottom , that dyneema is so strong . I would put maybe a weak link in it to break at say 20lbs and just forget about it as a trip line to lift a fouled anchor .
You're not wrong that amazingly you do get idiots lifting a marker buoy thinking it's for mooring, it's happened with our orange buoy. However we havent had that problem with the VisionAnchor buoy and I don't think we will. Thats because when you lift it it will just spool out more line from the tensioned reel inside, it's not pulling on the anchor. You would have to pull enough line out from the buoy and tie it to something then pull to put any force on the anchor to trip it. Also looking at a bit of string the thickness of your flag halyard you would have to be REALLY stupid to think you couls tie your boat to it!

You see we've missed a trick there, a video called 'the best thing to have on your boat' with a thumbnail of a semi-naked girl would probably get more views although arguable be less informative!
That, and the fact that they’re production is very limited. As of right now, they’re completely sold out. So, probably not a holiday gift that’ll garner excitement.
Thank you for featuring our app in your video! We hope that our fellow sailors will find it useful in staying organized.
I love that Judy says “ film” and “filming “ !! 🎥📷

There will be an episode on Thursday, you don't get rid of us that easily!
I wish the Vision Anchor had a small camera that you could use to check if the anchor is properly set.
The original concept had exactly that but it just proved too difficult and expensive to produce
@@svfairisle and at 1000 euros already pretty expensive!
That was really fascinating, and extremely useful. Thanks and Happy Christmas! 🤗

The Wandrd looks like a good shape online, but what are the zips like? They look like they may suffer in the same way as the Lowpro ones

Does the anchor bouy have any illustration for nighttime, that would be a real advantage.
The buoy has reflective 3M tape on all four sides. There are currently no lights on the VisionAnchor S buoy.

The company that did my boat said indents are not a problem provided that the organisation carrying out the work are experienced and professional.
Love the anchor alarm device but really is way too expensive for what it is.
It's great if you get one free
Re; Vision Anchor. knowing where the anchor is, is useful but having a trip line may be more vital on some occasions. Bill

Fascinating VisionAnchor. But really, €999? That's taking the P like. I bet it costs about a tenner to make.

Ahh yes , it would set off the alarm if it got fouled on someone’s rudder or prop and got dragged away .
