Upkar was an iconic movie and possibly the best movie directed by Manoj Kumar.

Rajesh Khanna and Manoj Kumar together, now that would have been the most interesting duo ever. Manoj Kumar was not only a great actor and writer but his direction is amazing, particularly his camera work and his use of lighting. His use of profile shots and shadows while filming close ups is absolutely incredible and incredibly unusual for Hindi cinema. The song Deewana si mat pochu has one the best camera works I have ever seen outside of Guru Dutt movies. To me, Manoj Kumar is very similar to Guru Dutt in his direction and his screen persona, except Manoj Kumar was much more of a commercial maker. Manoj Kumar is very underrated. His movie Shor is one of cinemas all time masterpieces. Imagine, a movie about industrial noise pollution in 1970’s! Way ahead of its time.
Shor was actually his best work..no patriotic card used... very emotional.. unfortunately the negative climax disappointed the audience and Film was not successful...
@@rakeshsadeo commercial success is not what makes a movie great. Manoj Kumar in my opinion is not so highly regarded because of his patriotism theme. Usually the intellectual classes are snobs in that regard. Manoj Kumar, especially in his early films had the best camera work, the best use of lighting so each shot not just showed the scene but the camera also conveyed the character’s inner feelings. The song koi jab tomari reda choddai from Purab Pachim shows Saira Banu filmed in the shadows and in the dark, like her character was in the darkness of booze and western culture. Manoj Kumar was incredibly innovative in cinematography, something Guru Dutt also was great at. Manoj Kumar’s last great movie was Roti Kapda aur makaan. His later movies are pretty lame compared to his earlier movies.
Manoj Kumar is one of favourite directors... amazing creative work done by him..he lost himself after Kranti..there were some mistakes on personal ground which destroyed the genius...👍👍

Another elaborate n well-researched video on an iconic masterpiece of Indian Cinema. Upkar(1967) was an explosion.. it depicted the pulse of the times. No wonder, it was the TOPMOST BLOCKBUSTER of 1967,swept six Filmfare Awards n two National Awards. भारतीय सिनेमा के इतिहास में एक पढ़े-लिखे किसान की प्राथमिकताएँ और उन्हें हासिल करने के दौरान उसका संघर्ष अगर किसी फिल्म में सशक्त तरीके से पहली बार दिखाया गया तो वह'उपकार' थी. फिल्म में उठाए गए मुद्दे आज ५५ साल बाद भी प्रासंगिक हैं. डायलॉगस् और गीत के बोल आज भी रोंगटे खड़े कर देते हैं:
प्राण : भारत, कहाँ हैं वो लोग जिन्हें जंग का शौक है?
भारत: पूरन, ये ( मिट्टी) आने वाली नस्ल की अमानत है.. इसकी रक्षा करना हमारा धर्म है.. इसपे हल चलाना हमारा फ़र्ज़ है..
प्राण : और पूरन, अगर बँटवारे का ही कहना था तो कहा होता :भारत, अपनी अच्छाइयों का बँटवारा कर दे..भारत, अपनी इंसानियत का बँटवारा कर दे..
भारत: पर सुन, मैं भी भारत हूँ.. मैं न तो बँटवारे के हक़ में कभी था और न अब हूँ.. Note the subtle reference to the most tragic episode of Partition of India in 1947.
And Manoj Kumar was only 29 when he made this film.

Please do an episode about Manoj Kumar’s Shor. My favorite Manoj Kumar movie. I saw it in the 90’s on cable and just was blown away by it. It wasn’t anything I had seen before. It was the SRK and Salmon Khan era. Shor was the first movie that made me start watching 70’s movies, and the beginning of my love for 70’s Indian movies. Shor is on top of my list.

Thanks, maybe one on Roti Kapda aur makaan, a very interesting commercial film. I wish someone would do an in-depth analysis of his career. My favorite directors are Raj Khusla, Vijay Anand, Guru Dutt and Manoj Kumar.

One more information.Sadhna was approached as the lead due to Woh Kaun this being a hit but she went to Boston for thriod treatment.Then Ashaparekh was taken as their previous film Do badan was also a hit.Sadhna when on top had to go abroad and she missed Sunghursh Around the world In addition to these above two films.
