Thank you Austin for the kind words about John Sykes, I heard earlier today and it hit me hard. Tygers of Tan Pang, Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake (During their best years with Neil Murray and Cozy Powell R.I.P.) and Blue Murder. His 1978 Les Paul Custom is beyond Cool, you need to find a clean 78 Custom or spend the money and document his 2006 Signature that Gibson made. They didn't make many (66) so I'm sure it will sky rocket in price should any come up for sale. R.I.P. John Sykes

I’m 100% in agreement with you on the analysis of a John Sykes Les Paul. That would mean an awful lot to me, you, and many others. His sound was top of the mark in rock and roll and the fact that he sang so well while he played such amazing guitar had my utmost respect.

Japan calls 2nd hand goods or untested stuff junk. This used to be common with video games, there would be junk lots of perfectly fine video games/controllers that are untested. It may be a translation error.

Yes, it's basically just "sold as is". As in they can't confirm that everything works. I've bought a lot of JUNK that basically just were change the strings and dust it off and it's good to go.

@@GummerNH "Used as-is" in a pawn shop or thrift store is probably the most direct equivalent. There was some really good stuff in the junk sections of the "Hard-Off" I went to, it was just untested and more oddball/low-end/consumer than the nice used Marantz hifi stuff in the main section of the store.

RIP John Sykes, indeed. I know him primarily for his theme song from the Japanese anime "Black Heaven", "Cautionary Warning". I figured it was worth mentioning since much of your video tonight featured guitars sold in Japan. Thanks for letting us know of his passing.

I was glad to hear you mention John Sykes passing. He was one of my favorite musicians and I’m heartbroken that he has lost his battle with cancer at age 65. He was way too young to have his life cut short by such a terrible disease. I absolutely LOVED his playing and songwriting. What he gave to the rock world changed the shape of music as we know it. His music was beautifully written and expressive in all of the right ways. The tone that he got out of his Les Paul was hands down the BEST tone in rock music. I would certainly LOVE to see a video concerning his Les Paul and the things that made it as special as it sounded in his hands. I was always impressed with his singing while he played that Les Paul like the virtuoso he was. If you can put together an analysis of his guitar, it would be stellar. RIP John Sykes…

There is a great second hand store in Japan called "Hard Off". They have a damaged section called "JUNK". I believe that is a blanket term for damaged and/or heavily used. When are you going to visit Japan? Guitar shopping there is fun.

    • @jamesperry4470

Which cities? Can one just go to Tokyo for 4 days and experience it?

    • @HeathenRenegade
      @HeathenRenegade 11 дней назад +2

@jamesperry4470 It depends on what else you're doing. Ochanomizu Station has a bunch of music stores right in front of it with varying brands and prices. There are a couple of other stores within walking distance as well. ESP has a couple of different locations in the area.
The next station to the East from there is Akihabara, which is known for tech stuff and video games, but there are two Hard Off stores on the same street, which both have musical instrument sections (slightly off the main roads). I've not seen much Gibson there, but there's cool stuff. There's also another music store in Akihabara called Ikebe Music. I haven't been, but they seem to offer Gibson.
I went to one Hard Off location near where I was staying (Kichijoji Station), which had a LOT of guitars, including various Gibsons. There's another music store there too (though I didn't like their low-end offerings). I'd save that for a different trip, since it's far off to the West and probly requires more connecting train rides.
On top of all that, there are several options around Shibuya, including the Fender Flagship store (though that's a bit out of the way). There are also a couple more near Shinjuku, though I've heard that area is the most 'dangerous' part of the city (I think mainly due to scams these days). It's always crowded due to being a major Station though, and i liked those stores okay when I went. Don't be afraid of Shinjuku. It's just big and busy. Still makes any American city look like a fiery hellscape by comparison.
The big caveat of looking for instruments in Japan is that they're less likely to be fine with you testing out instruments unless you're serious about buying them. Due to manners, I'd almost say they're unlikely to flat out deny you if you ask them properly, but most music stores are more on the serious side. At the very least, I've never been offered to try anything out. It's not like a big issue, but you should probably learn how to ask if you need to examine or play something.
One last element to keep in mind. As a foreigner, there are obviously travel implications with musical instruments. I just sold my guitar before leaving, so I didn't have to deal with that. However, one positive implication is that foreigners (usually) get to buy instruments tax-free (if they have their passport on them at the store). There's like a threshold (I think it's 5,000 yen) where anything in certain categories of product is tax-free and many of the places I listed have signage showing that. This means, of the two prices printed on any given guitar, you pay the lower one in this scenario, which can help a lot.
Hopefully I've helped either you or someone who might happen to have a similar question (I only lived in Tokyo a few months before leaving, but I spent a lot of time guitar shopping/browsing. If I got anything way wrong, I guess respond with corrections).

Excellent presentation! I couldn't have said it better myself. I wish that my dad kept the Les Paul Silverburst Custom that he got from my asshole brother. Only someone had routed it for a Floyd Rose tremolo. And those Kluson Deluxe machines are the best! I know I have a double line set of Kluson Deluxe machine heads from 1966 with the double ring buttons. They still work perfectly well as they always did. If you oil them regularly they'll last a life time.

I just desmoked about $70,000 in amplifiers from the LA fires. They have a new strange odor that will go away fairly soon. It's brutal process but it's fast, very effective, and kind of dangerous. They kind of smell like some hospital operating rooms.

John Sykes had those iconic riffs and solos. Without John on that self-titled Whitesnake '87 album, Whitesnake isn't Whitesnake. John also had great vocals. Listen to the Blue Murder song, "Valley Of The Kings" and also John's solo live album "Bad Boy Live!". They are incredible. Rock in peace, legend!

That Deluxe is the one out of this batch to buy.
IF it was played that much and is still that close to original at that age it is probably a TOTAL ringer as far as being a player's guitar.

Austin can we please correct your chronic misuse of the term "overspray"? Overspray is when you accidentally spray something unintentionally perhaps because it wasn't masked correctly. You mean respray. I'm not prone to make these sort of comments but you misuse the term constantly and it's really to the point of miseducating your viewers.
