    When Gerhard Berger was asked about the competivness of the 2002 season he said:"Today it looks so easy, back in the mid to late 80's I had to race Senna, Prost, Mansell and Piquet all in top cars..."
    Ferrari signed Berger TWICE. 1987-1989, and then 1993-1995
    Berger understood what Alesi went through, because he was driving the same uncompetitive cars alongside him, and at least Berger had won plenty of races up to that point.
    Berger's favorite car was the late 1987 Ferrari.

    3:06 - 3:11. That sequence will give any serious F1 fan chills! I think that Gerhard just completed the *best* qualifying lap of the 1993 season right then and there given the nature of the Suzuka circuit and the nature of the Ferrari F93A car.

    Gerhard said he tried harder during the 1990 and 1991 seasons than at any time during his career. He finished both seasons far behind Senna in the points. He later said he decided before the 1992 season to just relax and have fun - figuring that McLaren would dump him at season's end, anyhow. He ended up nearly beating Senna (49-50) in the final points standings!

    Lots of people think Gerhard Berger's luckiest escape was from his 1989 Imola crash. But it wasn't. A week after the 1984 season ended, he rolled his BMW road car down a cliff (!). He wasn't wearing a seatbelt, so he was thrown clear of the car (!!). Amazingly, the next car to pass by was occupied by two of Austria's leading spinal surgeons (!!!) and they attended to Gerhard and ensured the emergency crews that arrived at the accident moved him properly to the ambulance without further injuring his neck or spine. If they hadn't happened to come upon the scene so quickly, Gerhard could have been paralyzed for life or worse...

      Hello Andres!
      I just came by and read your comment. I am from Austria and yes I was damn proud, that Gerhard joined Scuderia Ferrari in 1987 and later again. After these very successfull years from Grande Niki at Ferrari in the 1970s. Of course the years at McLaren with Senna were a big deal. Gerhard and Ayrton were really good friends, they also went on holiday together some time(s) and they had big fun together in their free time, when they shared it.
      And I just recognized, that Gerhard was at his 1st win at Mexico 1986 on podium together with Prost and Senna.
      At his last win in 1997 Hockenheim he was on podium with Hakkinen and Schumacher.
      No bad companions for meeting up at the F1 podium. 🤤

    If he came along a few years later he could've done much more. He raced against Prost, Senna, Mansell, Schumacher, Hlil and Piquet(the drivers who won every title between 1985-1996) all in their prime plus guys like Boutsen, Patrese and Alesi, who were also constant threats for the win. In short, he competed against a lot of the top drivers of all time and was teamed with one of those drivers every year of his career except 1986-88.

    • @adampetten5349
      @adampetten5349 6 лет назад

      Kyle1851 I bet any 2 of Alesi,Berger and Boutsen would have won 11-12 races in the 1988 McLaren.

    Great tribute to an F1 legend. I was member of his fan club after 1994. Before I was a member of Senna's fan club. I hope to meet Berger one day. Maybe when DTM comes back to Zolder I might bump into him.

    Good to see that he had/has so many fans even outside of Austria, I really appreciate that he's popular around the world. Together with some others (Senna, Alesi, Hill...) he was my favourite driver when I used to watch F1. After this generation of drivers retired it became less interesting to me.

      )

    Gerhard should have joined Williams 1993 instad Ferrari. If Hill could won the chapioship, Gerhard would have won for sure.

    • @adampetten5349
      @adampetten5349 6 лет назад

      Andrea Rojas Prost won it with Williams in 93. The car was just ok. Bad in 94 though better in the second half ...very good in 95 and 97 and great in 96.Williams would still win but Damon had 69 points to Prosts 92. Berger and Hill would be 75-80 each as Prost was the greatest racer since Nuvolari and Dick Semen.

    • @conormcentagart9460
      @conormcentagart9460 6 лет назад +1

      Answer: Prost sign a contract with frank Williams at end of 1992 season to get the drive in 1993. No one could get the drive except Prost unfortunately:(

      @andrearojas1248 6 лет назад

      conor mcentagart
      Still anyone but Senna who was excluded by Prost's contact. Patrese went to Benetton, expecting Prost/Mansell in Williams but Mansell left for CART '93 so there was no driver left but their test driver Hill. Berger sign too early with Ferrari. He could have joined Williams and beaten Prost in the same car as Prost was long past peak.

    back then one really looked up to those guys and felt the adrenaline and freedom. and they made the difference.
    nowadays the teams place kids in ultra-safe rc cars. with all that bits and bytes onboard the driver is the weakest link.

    He was probably not the fastest, the best or the driver with the biggest "kill" instinct - BUT - he was (or actually is) a true character, a gentleman racer and an extremyl down-to-earth person.
    He´s like a 1980s David Coulthard (to me)

    • @adampetten5349
      @adampetten5349 6 лет назад

      dtmfan Coulthard wouldn't finish above 3rd in 1988 when both McLarens were running. David would have been 2nd not 1st in Italy. Still David was a great number 2 guy but Berger was the prototypical support driver. Senna let him win in 91 in Japan because of it. Coulthard won 3 more with stronger cars. Both great guys though.
