  • Capuchin monkeys are increasingly kept and traded in Trinidad and Tobago and this causes tremendous harms to animals, society and the environment. Mother monkeys are typically killed to obtain the babies, and most captive monkeys live only a fraction of their life in the wild. Many people who keep monkeys also put themselves at risk of bites and diseases from an animal that can live more than 40 years in captivity. Overwhelmed keepers will often release these non-native capuchins into the wild which puts local species at risk.

This is all happening because they are being made out to be a high dollar luxury exotic pet.
How about instead of all the money racket simply make it as easy to have a monkey as a pet as a cat or a dog then it won’t be a big deal.
Any time something is made out to be expensive & hard to get you will have horror stories related to it because people are greed driven.
There are dogs that are common household pets that are far more ferocious & dangerous than a capuchin monkey, yet they are cheap & easy to get so it’s no big deal.
So instead of saying don’t get a pet monkey how about stop making monkeys a high dollar racket & let them live happy lives with good pet owners which is way better than limited chances of survival in the wild.

Hi Crystal, thank you for your comment! In fact, monkeys are a low cost pet in T&T, and the vast majority end up being treated very badly in captivity, especially after they grow out of their baby stage. So we don't encourage monkey keeping at all. Most homes aren't able to care for animals that are long-lived, have strong instincts, and need a lot of freedom to roam.
