I lived in Hawaii and still miss it.
This is not the proper hula dance, in hula the knees should be bent, each step should have meaning and matches the words. Of course we do not expect everyone to know this, and at least they don't make it a sexy dance. I'm Filipino and I learned this while reading and watching videos about our Austronesianian heritage.

@@linalu5881it's sad all y'all getting angry for nothing over a remake of a disney movie dance, especially with one that much famous as it's litterally named in the title and that is from one of the most know studio in the world aka disney. So, insulting people dance and skills for nothing (as it is made exactly in the way they do in the movie), u don't bring fame at all to ur country doing that. Pretty sad, considering just correcting her saying it's not hawaiian would be enoug and a lot more kind.
@darkdestroyer4228 Maybe don't call it a hawaiian dance when it's NOT. We take our dance seriously for other cultures to just take it and make it their own and not even take the time to learn and practice our culture/dance. This is an insult to our hawaiian culture Thank you very much

As a Hawaiian and hula dancer myself, this is not hula, but I appreciate you guys trying. We do not dress in this attire, and the moves do not match the lyrics nor are they culturally accurate.
I was gonna say they seemed a bit off rhythm and didn’t completely seem to match the tone. Some seemed happy to do it and others not as much. Some seemed to put WAAAYYY more hip into moves than others. My sister was a ballet dancer so I’m pretty familiar with choreography and matching moves to music and this was not it. The moments of definitive drums were often paired with fluid movements. While not a hula expert by any means it was easy to see it was an attempt but not a good one.

Dear Mahina, do you know if there is a video on youtube of a dance to this same song that is culturally correct in terms of movement? I have found many videos but I don't know enough to distinguish between authentic polynesian dance and an artistic interpretation.

It is hawaiiam, but in the 2002' movie lilo and stitch from disney style, so it's fiction. People can't read title and description anymore or what ? Too much lazy maybe ?

It’s modern stuff for kids. They are still using pretty traditional moves. The drum beat is like a sped up kahiko chant.
As a Hawaiian, this is insulting. Hula has meaning.The movements have meaning. Even the attire, flowers, adornments have meaning. No disrespect to the dancers, as they are probably unaware. But the instructor should have researched better. I don't mind haole adopting Hawaiian culture, as that helps it perpetuate, but please be respectful. This is not so.

I think not reading a title is more disrecpectful than that tbh. And even more not knowing about lilo and stitch which is loved and famous worldwide and made a lot of tourism back then after 2002's (which, back then, nobody ever complain) as even the music was made for this movie.

As a Hawaiian girl and I dance in the Competition you don’t make up a dance and culture is not a costume
Culture is subjective, before the kamehameha dynastie (who burn indigenous hawaiian temple) girl and boy wasn't even allowed to have meal together, and that was a tradition, which, as you know, don't exist anymore.
Anyways they don't claim it's real hawaian dance, they claim it's from the movie (as the song was made for too) Lilo and Stitch from disney which happen in hawaii, and all in it is similar to what is made in the movie, and nobody complain about it back then curiously, people was less brainwashed back then.

This disappointed me as a hula dancer, none of the motions were accurate to the words and the outfits are way off. It looked like you guys were making fun of the culture almost flailing around your arms in a grass skirt calling it hula. Disappointed for what everyone thinks hula is.
