Thanks for your excellent video, very precious and helpful. I would like to see in next updates by Apple, the opportunity to assign a TITLE to each note, now Notes takes as title the first word that appears in a note.
On your MacBook, go to your Notes app and click on 'Notes' in the top left corner, select 'Settings' and make sure that the 'New notes start with:' setting is selected as 'Title'. That should solve your issue.

Hi Shiv amigo, you know I uninstalled Notes app from my Macbook pro/Highsierra, and I would like to install again. But I couldn't found the notes.app nowhere. Can you help me in this case, from where can I download it? Thanks
I don't think it's possible to delete an Apple stock app from your MacBook. Have you tried searching for it? Try pressing Command + Spacebar together to bring up the Spotlight Search, and search for 'Notes'.
Great video. Indeed I have start to take notice of the increasing sophistication of Notes thru its constant evolution. However, today I’m stuck with Evernote. I wonder if there is a way to stranger keeping my tags from Evernote’s to Notes. …
Maybe if you can copy your Evernote tags into the actual body of the notes you want to transfer to Apple Notes, that may be a solution and avoid you having to start using Apple Notes afresh. Let me know if that works?
My main request would be to be able to nest smart folders because I have lots now and they all have to show in one very long list on the left, unless that is someone knows a way of doing this already but I haven’t found that yet. A bug in notes is that share sheets don’t recognise tags, if I type #receipt for instance in a share sheet and press return it does not become a tag in the note the way it should do, I have to then open the note it created in the app Notes, go to the end of the #receipt tag, insert the cursor and press return, only then does it become a tag. If you hit return when you’re typing in the share sheet nothing happens either way, it doesn’t become a tag. I’m sure this will get fixed at some point.
Thought I should chime in on this. I committed to using Apple Notes about a year ago. I had 15 or 20 folders and probably over 300 notes. About a month ago the app started deleting my folders and sent my notes to the recently deleted notes. Thankfully because of that I was able to recover my notes but now I have abandoned the notes app and switched back to OneNote. Not sure what happened because the notes app had been very reliable up until then. After it was over the app deleted every one of my folders over the period of about a week. I spent the better part of two days cleaning up that mess.
It was random, no new device nor was I organizing notes on any device. What was really strange is that it kept happening over a few days until all my folders were gone.
Right now i'm using UpNote and it's great. It has markdown language, code blocks and it's really simple just like Apple Notes, but it also has a rollback feature in case we do something wrong with one of our notes. I love Apple notes, but i was always afraid of deleting something or messing the sync features, because on Applenote you can't recover your notes after they are changed.
That's a really great point, maybe Apple should look to add 'version control' like Notion does so that if you do mess up or need to go back to a previous version, you have that option. Thank you for your valuable input!
@@ShivsStudio I think it has the support of all platforms and all popular mobile devices. I'm using it on iPhone, Android, iMac, and iPad, and I am super happy with it. It's also not perfect and has some lost opportunities. But it's the app of the category when you buy Premium not because the Free Version does not have all needed functionality, but because you are so happy to work with it, that you think that you need to buy it because projects like this should grow and make more people happiness. I think you can make your own review and decide for yourself what is the best app for you, and even maybe create a new RUclips video, that will help other people. I think it will be a very interesting video. Something like: "It Could Be The Perfect Note App, but only if ...". 😎
Thanks very much! I did learn a couple of things, though I am very simplistic in my needs and don’t know whether I’ll ever need those features as useful as they may appear to be, perhaps once or twice and then the problem is remembering how to do them! But if you don’t remember how to do it on an Apple device you might as well forget any other kind! My major comment, which is almost irrelevant to your Video clip, is that I constantly get all these updates for all these Apple apps, and not one of them happens to be upgrading the Contacts app!!! Of course, that’s probably because there has been no update for eons going back into the Pleistocene era! I just wish we’d get an update that would make it a lot more flexible, and with plenty more options like adding images to the notes area of each contact, as you can do with Notes!!! Thank you for your time! :-)
Thank you, I'm glad you found it useful! What do you use your contacts app for, and what images do you need to add in the notes section for your contacts? I never use it as you can access your contacts from the Phone app instead!
@@ShivsStudio the phone app IS the Contacts app. It’s the same database, but written slightly differently to interface with iOS and macOS, respectively, but the appearance and the fields are identical. I use the Contacts app like I imagine most everyone else, to keep track of my contacts, both business and personal. I would like to be able to make more detailed notes in the notes section that refer to the particular contact which may include let’s say a photograph of their house, or add a link to a photo on the Photos app for some other kind of reference that I cannot come up with at the moment. I do know that there have been many times where I feel hampered by the inability to embellish information on the contact and lament its limitations. The other problem with the Notes area is that it tends to time out while you’re typing something and you find you having typed a couple of characters or even a couple of words too many that have gone into outer space because the time out just threw you off of the Notes area. It is a contrast that the Notes app has been constantly though gradually improved over time while the Contacts app has been left unchanged since it was introduced. It’s as if all those people that wrote the app, up and left and went to some other project within Apple!
I didn't realise there were so many issues with the app! I'll be honest, I don't add too many details into my contacts list - just name and phone number, so I wasn't aware of these problems.
When you're on a website, you can click on the share icon at the bottom of your screen and select the Notes app or 'Add to Quick Notes', both of which will let you save your website in the Notes app.
Yes - check out the Smart Folders section at 01:02 of the video which talks about how to set up Smart Folders and use tags to automatically file your notes.
I appreciate your feedback. To address these issues, you can try slowing down the playback speed by going to Settings > Playback speed, and try watching the video in theatre mode (t) or full screen (f).
I agree with everything however, I wish it also had an option to use the pencil over the text. Meaning if you wanna highlight or make additional notes over a specific text for some reason it doesn't do that like notability or goodnotes to thank you for the video.
I'm viewing again your video since, for a non native english speaker, I need to frequently pause it in order to understand fully the operational procedures described. A thing that I hope Apple will implement is this: In a smart folder I can see all the folders that contains hashtagged notes, but it would be nice to see the CONTENTS, the single items written in each folder, not the folder. When I gather, for examples, the suggestions of my students, each in a folder with the studen'ts name and a tag #Suggestion in each folder; it would be useful that the smart folder will contain the suggestions and not the single folders with the name of the students, in such a way it will be useful to order the different suggestion and eliminate duplicates and print all of them in a bunch etc.
When I add a tag in a note, the note itself gets added to the Smart Folder. In the same way, if you have a Smart Folder called 'Suggestions', and applied a selected tag called '#suggestions', then all of your students notes that have '#suggestions' in them should come up in that Smart Folder. Is that not the case?
@@ShivsStudio I tried but if I create a Smart Folder called Suggestions, and then I have different other folder, with various names, in which the notes have the tag #Suggestions; then what goes in the smart folder are not the single notes but the folder that contains them. At least this is how it works on my computer.
I don’t think being a non English native speaker impacts your ability to watch the video without stopping. I am U S citizen and always need to pause these instructional videos as I find the author seems to speak too fast. Just an fyi.
My problem is that if I used the on screen keyboard first to write a note I can’t go back with the pencil to mark it up or add pencil note in margin. 🤷♀️ Even after choosing the tools function.
Been using Apple Notes for about 3 weeks now for school. I’m taking hand written notes, which is okay…biggest complain is that I wish there was a way to “turn page” as the document is getting longer, it’s getting laggier and laggier
Are you using the Notes app for handwritten notes? Apple Notes is best for typing notes, while for handwritten notes there are better apps such as Goodnotes and Notability.
The rows and columns of Apple Notes's tables should automatically adjust to fit content. There is no control to explicitly set a width or height, apart from adding whitespace to increase text length.
People really underestimate the app, so I'm glad you found this helpful. Unlocking a note requires FaceID so there's no way you can forget your password 😄
That is one drawback, although I guess the 'Markup' feature is the closest solution Apple provides. Do you find yourself having to write over typed text a lot?
@@ShivsStudio not very often, but I do from time to time want to scribble over some text or highlight text that I’ve typed. For that reason I use Goodnotes 6 instead of
Goodnotes is great for writing notes with your Apple Pencil, but I find it less useful when making typed notes. Notability is a great alternative too - have you used that?
Thanks for the great review, but the UpNote App is much better than Apple Notes. Apple Notes has a few big problems, critical for me: 1. The BIGGEST issue: No support for Markdown. It's a shame to not have it. 2. No ability to create anchors in notes. So you can't link one note to some specific place in another note (in Apple Notes as I see, it allows to link only to URL or other note (not specific place in that note)). 3. Notes look good only on the mobile. Apple Notes doesn't have a max-width limitation and images do not take all width: so for example portrait orientation pictures will look good only on the mobile, but on my iMac, it will take only 1/3 of the screen, but the text will take all width, so it looks so ugly, that it's kill any wish to work with it. So when Apple fixes these 3 issues - I will remove all my external Notes Apps, and will use only Apple Notes)
on my apple notes I jotted down movies I haven't seen, many important informations and address, links and more, but I permanently deleted it even from recently deleted, I now regret it. I don't think there's a way to retrieve it back, if there is please help. I need all my information back
@ShivsStudio oh ok, thank you, but for now on I'm careful and I jot down new links, but not the same ones like before since I've mistakenly deleted them
I only miss these two features: 1. Ability to show hide sidebar without opening note in new window 2. Open link to other note in new window by cmd+click
6:35 - Does anyone know how to make this 'link to other notes' feature work on desktop? At the time of writing this, I can only find a way to make this work on mobile. I think that they maybe used to have this feature on desktop but they removed it? Apple obviously want to be careful not to hack too many features onto their app. Apple notes is insanely brilliant. Its UX is so smooth. It is easy to navigate. And it has just enough features to make it the ultimate notetaker. If they add too many features then they risk it becoming some terrible, confusing, hacky piece of software (like Clickup, for example). But I seriously think Apple need to consider adding this feature of linking notes to other notes. This one simple feature would seriously change the game. It would allow us to turn our apple notes into our own personal wiki. Notion is good for this, but Notion is also not a super elegant note-taking app. It is not as smooth or nimble as Apple notes. Simply adding this one feature would help them to dominate other smart note takers in the space, without becoming too complicated or hacky.
Link to other notes still works on desktop, how are you trying to add a link? I agree with your comments on Notion, Apple Notes seems to be a lot easier to navigate.
If you dedicate enough time to know Apple’s apps, you won’t need to spend money at the store - you get high end apps for free from Apple. They’re excellent and work seamlessly throughout all of them: iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Mac. You just start on one and finish on the other.
PDF Expert for hand written notes is excellent and everything is pdf, you can save anywhere in your file system and there are also internal and external links.
Thanks for the Video, however there seems to be a flaw with its back-up. Try finding Apple Notes in your Time Machine...it's not there and that makes a good product unreliable.
Thanks for your reply. I use notes on iMac. If my Mac developed a problem and it lost all my stuff, all my stuff would be saved on Time Machine all except my notes as they are synced with it. If I delete a note on my iPad or vice-versa, within seconds it's gone from my iMac and on iCloud. The kicker is, Time Machine doesn't save Notes and would be lost but my other stuff would be saved.
Apple’s notes app cannot converted to read only. If you accidental deleted an entry or even a single line in one of your notes while browsing the note app, then your screwed
That's a good point that another viewer also mentioned. I think it would be a great feature if Apple added version control so that you could go back to previous versions of your notes in case you accidentally delete something.
@@eugenemccafferty2255 not an entire entry deletion but a few accidentally deleted words or lines. Since it can’t be converted to read only, while browsing a specific note and erroneously deleting a word or words.
Only one downside: you can’t save it in a folder with all the other documents that belong to let’s say a project. But for all the simple things you do on your own it’s great.
@@ShivsStudio I mean Excel Word, Pages Numbers PowerPoint etc documents. Like reports, presentations etc. You can’t have a project consisting only of notes I think.
That's a good point, although with iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma, Apple has introduced a feature where if you are typing something on Apple Notes and start to find it too restrictive, you can actually finish writing your note in Pages. That way you can start in Notes and save it as a Pages doc with all your other documents.
Unfortunately not, you can sort the notes within the folders but not the folders themselves. You can however manually move folders by pressing Edit and then using the three lines to the right of the folders to move them around.
@@ShivsStudio I’m not an expert but would imagine being able to add highlights or change the colour of text is an easy modification. Would be such a useful feature for me personally… allowing me to highlight notes based on subject or importance etc
@@ShivsStudio I read non fiction so take notes so I remember that I’m reading. In other apps I highlight them depending on importance. I use bold on apple notes or even underline

Is there a possible way to make a note app come out of the corner?
My friend can do that, I don't know how to do it tho
They told me they can just keep it and a corner, and note by just pressing it. It comes on the screen not closing the other app
On the iPhone or MacBook?
Really cool video. Have you tried the new Apple Pencil? I am so confused with all these models 😢
Thank you! Stay tuned 😉
Can I edit doc file with Apple Pencil?handwriting to text possible in doc file edit?
Yes - you can write with the pen farthest from the ruler, which has an "A" on it. Your handwriting will convert automatically to text as you write.

How do I open two Notes at the same time on my iPhone?
You can’t, this would require some form of multitasking.
Great tutorial, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
It would cool could send a chart to open the numbers app
I’ve not tried this, but can you drag a numbers file into your note?
I hope they will allow us to edit text Color on iPhone
Good idea!
Great video. Indeed I have start to take notice of the increasing sophistication of Notes thru its constant evolution. However, today I’m stuck with Evernote. I wonder if there is a way to stranger keeping my tags from Evernote’s to Notes. …
Isn't Evernote a paid service now? It may be time to start writing new notes in Apple Notes!
@@ShivsStudio but is it possible to transfer my notes from Evernotes (which is a paid software ) to Notes?
Hopefully Apple updates these in the next update!
That’s odd! Were you in the process of backing up/moving your information to a new device? Or did they just randomly start deleting?
It was random, no new device nor was I organizing notes on any device. What was really strange is that it kept happening over a few days until all my folders were gone.
That’s quite unlucky, never heard of that happening before. Does OneNote fulfil all your requirements?
Yes, it is quite good on Mac and Windows@@ShivsStudio
Nice, I'll check it out! How's the iPhone app?
Great video - very helpful tips!
Thank you!
Thank you.
You're welcome!
I also use UpNote, and it's one of the best apps for writing notes!
@@HealthyTips-4U awesome - does it have an iPhone and Mac app? I might need to try this...
Thank you for the suggestion!
Can u make pdf from u photos with note app?
Unfortunately not, only scanned documents can be turned into PDFs.
Can I use Apple notes as evernote’s web clipper I visit lot of websites and I want to save scrapbook of the sites in categories
When you're on a website, you can click on the share icon at the bottom of your screen and select the Notes app or 'Add to Quick Notes', both of which will let you save your website in the Notes app.
@@ShivsStudio thank you for reply I want to tag the screenshot of the web page so I can save in seperate categories. Is it possible in notes ?
Yes - check out the Smart Folders section at 01:02 of the video which talks about how to set up Smart Folders and use tags to automatically file your notes.
Great video 👍👌
Thank you!
I appreciate your video, however can you redo it and slow down and focus the camera closer? Thanks
That's a good point, and I find Notability and Goodnotes to be far superior when it comes to making notes with an Apple Pencil.
Thanks
You’re welcome!
My problem is that if I used the on screen keyboard first to write a note I can’t go back with the pencil to mark it up or add pencil note in margin. 🤷♀️ Even after choosing the tools function.
Yes unfortunately Notes separates the area where you type and write with the Pencil. Hopefully they update this in the next iPadOS.
How to change table width and height
The rows and columns of Apple Notes's tables should automatically adjust to fit content. There is no control to explicitly set a width or height, apart from adding whitespace to increase text length.
I didn’t know we could do SO MUCH with notes! Also, how can you unlock a note? I forgot my password.
People really underestimate the app, so I'm glad you found this helpful. Unlocking a note requires FaceID so there's no way you can forget your password 😄
My detective friend uses apple notes voice to text when walking through a crime scene. Quicker than paper and pen.
What an interesting use case 😂🕵️♂️
Downside is that you can't write text with the Apple Pencil over typed text
That is one drawback, although I guess the 'Markup' feature is the closest solution Apple provides. Do you find yourself having to write over typed text a lot?
@@ShivsStudio not very often, but I do from time to time want to scribble over some text or highlight text that I’ve typed. For that reason I use Goodnotes 6 instead of
Goodnotes is great for writing notes with your Apple Pencil, but I find it less useful when making typed notes. Notability is a great alternative too - have you used that?

For sure, and I think their features have converged a bit over the years too.

What's that?
@@ShivsStudio BoardNotes is a handwritten note taking app designed specifically for iPads
Oh nice! Do you use it often?
Thanks for the great review, but the UpNote App is much better than Apple Notes.
Apple Notes has a few big problems, critical for me:
Apple Notes supports Markup, just click the pen icon and start writing on your PDFs.
@@ShivsStudio Apple Notes doesn't have Markdown. Markdown and Markup - it's not the same. Markdown move notes to the next level.

Why can’t I simply add a folder to my hard drive on my iPad and MacBook like I can on my phone?
Do you mean inside your Notes app, or to your Files?
on my apple notes I jotted down movies I haven't seen, many important informations and address, links and more, but I permanently deleted it even from recently deleted, I now regret it. I don't think there's a way to retrieve it back, if there is please help. I need all my information back

Nice, you should also turn on your iCloud backup for the Notes app to make sure you've got a backup in the future.

1. Ability to show hide sidebar without opening note in new window
2. Open link to other note in new window by cmd+click
You can already do the first one, no?

Needs to expand the illustrations to see Shivs’ note tips. Otherwise, the program is okay.
Thanks for your feedback, I've made this adjustment in my more recent videos.
Thank you

What's this in relation to 🤔
If you dedicate enough time to know Apple’s apps, you won’t need to spend money at the store - you get high end apps for free from Apple. They’re excellent and work seamlessly throughout all of them: iPhone, iPad, MacBook, Mac. You just start on one and finish on the other.
Agreed, and the way they're optimised to work on your devices makes them even more useful!

I always used notes for all my work but my only issue is that after your handwritten note exceeds 4-5 pages it gets buggy and stops rendering
Apple Notes is great for typed notes, but there are better apps for handwritten notes such as Goodnotes and Notability.
@@ShivsStudio yeah I use Goodnotes for handwritten and Notes for typed
PDF Expert for hand written notes is excellent and everything is pdf, you can save anywhere in your file system and there are also internal and external links.
Thanks for the Video, however there seems to be a flaw with its back-up. Try finding Apple Notes in your Time Machine...it's not there and that makes a good product unreliable.
What about iCloud backup?

@@ShivsStudio just give us the ability to make it read only so we can’t accidentally delete anything off it while browsing

I think the best option you have is to swipe away the keyboard so you don't accidentally delete anything.
Every day I usually have more than 35 notes………… how to put all those notes in a SINGLE. FOLDER with date wise
You can drag notes into folders. When you’re in the folder, press the … button in the top right corner > Sort By > Date Created.
Only one downside: you can’t save it in a folder with all the other documents that belong to let’s say a project.
But for all the simple things you do on your own it’s great.
You can! Just add a hashtag to the notes and documents you want to save together and Apple Notes will create a Smart Folder for you.
Great content; difficult to follow. Needs closer views of screen, menus, and slower pace.
Thanks for your feedback. I’ve corrected a few of these points in my more recent videos.
Is it me? Or is there an option to FILTER/ORGANIZE the FOLDERS! Not the notes, BUT THE FOLDERS alphabetically?
Unfortunately not, you can sort the notes within the folders but not the folders themselves. You can however manually move folders by pressing Edit and then using the three lines to the right of the folders to move them around.
Lack of ability to highlight or colour text lets the app down imo… I use it for taking notes from books.
