I trained in aikido for several years, but I'm not sure where I picked this up. When I started doing it, my sensi hated it, but since it worked for me, he turned a blind eye.
However, I've used variations of this in real life a couple times and it worked really well. I'm really glad to see that it has a name and even more glad to see someone teach it with authority.
I tell everyone who questions whether aikido is a viable martial art, that I've used it literally dozens of times, with tremendous success. Then I tell them that there's what I call "modern dance theory aikido" on the non-martial end of the spectrum, then there's the Lenny Sly end of the spectrum, which is very martial and likely the most effective.

2:10 In wing chun we call that move a QUAN SAO. It’s comprised of two simultaneous hands. One, the TAN SAO or KNIFE HAND. You’d probably call it. Palm up . The bottom hand is a BONG SAO. We do 3 main techniques from there. 1. LOP SAO a grabbing of the arm or clothes. 2. BONG SAO SHIFT (we’ll take distance and change stances) 3. QUAN SAO proper (This technique is used and the top hand stays in, grabs the back hand and presses it down.

What I really like about this is all the attacks it can apply to. Punches, shoves, grabs, kicks, I can see this being viable for just about anything above the waistline. I mean sure, people don't attack like this, but these drills get the muscle memory down for the body mechanics. From there you can improvise all kinds of shit with it. I find that so many skeptics and MMA worshipers look to the style to give them the answers - when instead they should view the style as tools to FIND answers. On the subject of MMA, I've watched countless professional fighters overextend while launching bombs at their opponent - they are completely vulnerable to having this done to them. Honestly, my favorite thing about this channel is your ability to analyze the components of Aikido, take them apart, and put them back together like a mechanic. And how thorough you are when teaching every part.
PS: I also need to thank you, Lenny. I actually ran into a situation in the store I work at with some fucking punks who thought it'd be funny harass people for a TikTok video. When I asked them to leave, one guy tried to shove me, and I'm pretty sure it would have gotten worse if I let him. I didn't have room to throw my customary kick to the face, and it all happened so fast that I didn't have time for a prolonged grappling engagement. I used the hand deflections and yubi dori I learned here for a quick choked and shove. It was rough enough to give me time to observe his buddies much like a randori. Nothing glamorous, but it worked. After the first guy squealed, the other ones didn't want any, and they all left. I more or less shadowbox what I see here, but I had a taste of what it was like to be prepared. Thanks, brother!

Interesting! That looks very similar to what in wing chun we call the yin-bon, or inwards/collapsing wing-arm. Except our strategy would be to follow up with elbow strikes, punches, etc. rather than turning to grab and control their hand.
I'm really enjoying these videos, they're giving me a different perspective on my wing chun as well as a better appreciation for aikido.

Very interesting, the lower form of this deflection is how we at my dojo practice tsuki kotegaeshi with a tanto. The idea being that if in a real situation you are late in your movement or if the tanto gets pulled back by the attacker, getting cut on the outside of your forearms is better than getting cut on the inside where all of your veins and arteries are close to the surface.

I've personally used variations of the technique he's showing, in real fights and I've never had it fail. However, I trained hard in aikido and did so knowing that I lived where I might have to defend myself 2 to 3x per week.

Deflections is about angleing the attack away early and also letting the opponent keep his enertia at all cost to make it work. It's tricky to understand and a big advantage when you get it. It means not interupting the incoming movement path put still guide it away from it's target. Even if it is only a little bit. Often a little bit is enough if you also add angled or normal sidesteping or rotating the target bodypart the correct direction as combination. I recommend learning/trying these drills & learn the deflection principles and add it to your arsenal. This can give ANY martial art free options to pull something of. Even under pressure when learned.
If you want to take your deflections to the next lvl watch this guys channel. And YES it can be done FAST with realistic speed and it is VERY effective, even if it does not look like it. He has a video demonstrating real speed too. But here you have a taste of deflections at a slow speed. Otherwise you cant properly see how it works. You cant see it, but he is moving his body or tilting his body at the right angle to get away from the lethal angle of attack, so keep that in mind. I'ts NOT ONLY THE ARMS doing the deflections. He take a step every first move or angle the target with the knife. hard to see and believe for many. Also it's a instruction, NOT a full speed demonstration.
Watch your EARS!!! the first 16 seconds in the video:
    It's a Part 2: ruclips.net/video/HtQ4-IbI8jA/видео.html

Uke move in with one chosen technique of previous. Naga diffuse the technique and gain best position, we freeze here and discuss strength and weaknesses and follow ups. We reset uke moves in with a new attempt from two arm distance. We isolate this section and repeat that randori, till uke gone through at least one type of 'attack'.

Imagine this style apply to karate guy. He punch and retract his hand fast back to normal position, so we cant grab his hand. Thats why atemi first to blur opponent vision.

Aikido enjoy 2 myth that contradictive.
    A) it's a safe art that doesn't have attack
    B) it's a magical art that destroys opponent. (Steven Seagel movie)
It once attract students from both myth.
Aikido is safe because it's rules : no sparring. Wrist manipulation is dangerous.
    .........
Deflect thrust attack can be done for punch & knife thrust. There's hundreds of movement, why on earth you choose to remember it all, when you can choose to memorize a few movement that works?
    .........
You can see the deflection above (slightly different) on other martial art, such as Jujutsu, Kempo, Karate, Hapkido, Pencak silat, Wing chun & some other kungfu.
If it's works on other martial art, why some people thinks it doesn't works on Aikido?
    .......

@@Djent7779 Hi there, I practice 3 martial arts: Aikido, Koryu Jujutsu (Classical Jujutsu, also known as Koppojutsu) and Kenjutsu (Tenshin Shōden Katori Shintō-ryū). What I came up to realise after years of training, is that the footwork of Aikido is similar that at Koryu jujutsu, and Kenjutsu. After asking my Sensei, he told me that in Japan what came first were the martial arts with weapons (Kobujutsu) and then, after that, they develope hand to hand martial arts, thus there is the similitude. As always great video Lenny!

Kenjutsu is the sword art that defined aikido's footwork. Kenjutsu was battlefield sword work, which took into consideration many opponents coming from every direction.
However, Kendo borrowed things from Kenjutsu, but since kendo is a one on one - points based sport, it altered the footwork drastically, to adapt it to strictly one on one. Kendo footwork is not aikido footwork. Aikido retains kenjutsu footwork because it is also concerned with multiple attackers, coming from all directions.

I get the Aikido basic principle of non-injury to your opponent. And, with a lot of thought and practice you "may possibly" be able to deflect his lunging strike. But how much simpler would it be to parry / counter punch that strike before going for a throw etc? This technique does "compliment" the Art (Aikido) but is very inefficient re actual combat. Sorry, but a boxer would pound the shit out of your ribcage.

Check out 52,blocks, same move, skull and crossbones. Great move, the problem lies in trying to catch a full speed punch.maybe I don't understand aikido. For me, the more natural follow up would be a straight right hook combo.then maybe some lock or arm control.no disrespect to aikido.

    • @staticjump
      @staticjump 4 года назад

You might find the wing arm block in Wing Chun would compliment the skull and cross bones more before attempting a lock or throw. If you are thinking about including more grappling in your Boxing. The wing arm block, basically how this demo starts, can use the second hand to grab the wrist and pull the opponent into your strike, while keeping hold of the attacking hand. If against a boxer you need to be stupid quick to catch the hand, if working with other punching styles, you'll likely catch the first hand with more ease.

I keep hearing people say that an aikido master can’t win a UFC fight. Is this true, because when I see UFC fighters run towards their opponent while throwing a punch, I can only imagine seeing him be neutralize with the move shown in this video and continue with a submission. Right?

    • @cornpop7805
      @cornpop7805 4 года назад +2

A lot of people say that UFC is real fighting, but concider this, it has: a scheduled time and place, one on one, timed, a referee, pads, no small joint manipulations, no eye gouging, etc, etc, etc. You can't use objects or weapons, there's no furniture or walls to work from. It's NOTHING like a street or bar fight, otherwise you'd avoid the ground like the plague, lest you get kicked in the teeth or your brains stomped out.
To be clear, aikido isn't like real fighting either. So, yes you could use concepts from aikido in MMA and it would probably improve your performance.
I've used aikido in many real fights and it worked remarkably well. An aikidoist moves in a way that's really foriegn to most attackers, so it's usually over in 2 seconds. The person attacks, you evade and capture their ballance simultaneously. You then perform a finishing technique. It happens too weird and too fast for them to protect against it. Also, most aikido finishing techniques aren't something you can recover from immediately. I've been punched and kicked hundreds of times in real fights, but never knocked out. But, if Lenny did a kotegaishi (outside wrist turn) on me, with intent, the fight is over! Also, it would take 6 to 8 weeks before I could use that hand again.
