      @@Michael-tm9smit's a struggle only on paper that's the fear the US and Spain liked to use on Puerto Ricans, our land has vast resources for such a small island enough resources to have the interests of both the US and the rising power...China who's already tried to purchase Puerto Rico 5 times, we have a strategic location that makes it ideal for any nation to trade with us through our ports now that combined with the resources would make Puerto Rico the richest country in the Caribbean if not the entire of Latin America, just with the ports the ones Spain used for many years and literally called it Rich Port not only because of it's gold like you're thought in School but also because of the many nations that traded there after Spain it was the US who now owns the ports and take the majority of the paycheck, now I do firmly believe that if Puerto Rico were to become independent within a 10 year transition it with the island's current politicians then yes the citizens would be poor I've noticed that our politicians have that Hispanic tendency to be very corrupt they would be the Rich ones not the citizens. So in conclusion Puerto Rico independent would not fail simply because it became independent we have the resources to sustain ourselves the people would struggle because the politicians will fill their own pockets exploiting the resources to foreign nations and giving us nothing in return.

    As a pro-independence Puerto Rican resident, I am staunchly against tgis drive by shallow take of Puerto Rico's rich history. A person can note the negatives of colonialism while also seeing the positives. This type of revisionist demonization only srves to promote one's ahistorical self- inflated sense of moral superiority. Do better.

    • @alancantu2557
      @alancantu2557 11 месяцев назад +3

      Exactly right. This kind of analysis and tendency to view history through a moral lens absolves you from looking at historical events objectively. It tricks you into thinking that there is always a right and wrong, that everything is black and white, and that those who are on the “right” side will always and forever be the “good” guys.
      History, especially that of Puerto Rico, is FAR more complicated and nuanced than that. There were both good and bad things from the Europeans and Natives if you insist on looking at it through that lens.

    My take? Calling Puerto Rico's current status colonial is a stretch since we had the ability to vote for independence several times in referendums over the decades and always failed to vote for it. Less than 5% of the vote is for independence. Since we have been given self-determination, how then can we complain about our "colonial" status? We chose it. I do understand that the Independence movement was actively suppressed, but there is nothing stopping the will of the people to choose independence today. Until that time, those who support and end to colonialism need to respect the will of the majority. It's not colonialism when it is a choice.
    Are you not aware that the average Puerto Rican is 65% European colonizer by admixture? Did you not know that that it is now clear to geneticists that the Taino, of which an average of 14% of Puerto Rican ancestry derives from, were themselves colonizers? (www.nytimes.com/2020/12/23/science/dna-caribbean-islands.html) The Tainos completely replaced an archaic indigenous peoples that lived on the island as early as 6,000 years ago. About 1,700 years ago, the Tainos started moving into the lesser and greater Antilles. By 1,000 years ago, the last remnants of the original inhabitants of the Caribbean disppeared from Western Cuba. The Taino "genocided" another people that had claim to Puerto Rico for 4,500 years before they arrived. That makes the average Puerto Rican 79% colonizer. 65% European colonizer and 14% Taino colonizer.
    Colonialism is wrong. If 51% of Puerto Ricans supported independence and the US defied the will of the people and sought to maintain possession of it, I think the entire world would support a violent uprising by the Puerto Rican people. That is not the reality. I 100% believe that if a majority of Puerto Ricans voted for independence in a fair election, the US government would honor the result and grant us independence. And finally, a people that have a choice on their status is not a colony.

That's history and the world is fucked up, that doesnt make us "better". Sprains coloinization was a complete failure since they lost tons of money and lost majority of their wars post 1790. Haiti sent soldiers to territories to free them from Spain and succeeded. Without Haitis revolution most Spanish speaking countries would still be under Spain who in the 1800s were a falling country. PR would just be called Boriken and be inhabited still. It'll be a diff culture yea and some of us wouldn't be here. But human corruption and greed shouldn't be promoted because it led to our story. The ones creating chaos were the cannibals, the Aztecs, etc. Cannibal is a word that comes from Canniba island, an island that had people who raided other islands to kidnapp people to eat, as the natives told Columbus. What you have is a hate towards the europeans, and an idealization of native peoples. The Spanish conquered the Americas thanks to the native peoples, who joined them to fight their enemies, who slaved an eat them, like the Aztecs in Mexico. You have been totally brainwashed by your woke educative system. Had it not been b6 the Spanish, you “native life” would be a miserable one. They brougth civilization, science, music,agricultural advances, Greek and Roman culture, a written languaje, buildings, architecture, etc, etc. and they didn’t kill the natives, they mixed with them, you are a proof of that. Also will Puerto Rico ever have its name changed back to what the locals call it? I ask because I have seen a bit of a trend of former colonies creating movements to Change their names back to what they were called by the local peoples as opposed to what conquerors called it.

      Genuine question, not trying to play gotcha: If the message behind the anthem is that important, then why can’t it just be changed back to its revolutionary version? Does the average Boricua care enough about this, or is it just a trendy idea because of the newfound interest in anti-colonialism?

    •  11 месяцев назад

      @@alancantu2557 Good questions. Unfortunately, part of the deal of being a colonial territory is to suppress any feelings or hopes of freedom. So the insular government was instructed to use the colonial version. "It's not personal, it's just business", as they say. Now, does the average Boricua care enough about this? That is a tough one. It is possible that a growing number do, not because of a newfound interest in anti-colonialism, but likely because of more access to information, leading to a newfound interest in history in general. The Puerto Rican flag itself is a rebel flag, so much so that it was banned from Puerto Rico itself for some time. The colonial arrangement was never meant to last forever, and the US has said "No" to statehood for over 125 years. This is not hard to figure out.
