  • Today we are talking all about fuel oil. Oils have been used for burner fuels for decades. #2 and #6 Oils, being some of the most common fuel oils have great heating capability and can provide excellent BTU values in the combustion process. Atomization of these fuels is critical and this is achieved by either the use of compressed air of pressurized systems. Whether it's an air atomization burner or a pressure atomized oil burner the atomization is a must. See firsthand how temperature affects fuel oil viscosity.

I am going for my 1C Boiler license in MN, a question popped up on my practice test asking how many ways can oil be atomized or broken up to get proper combustion.
After doing research I came to the conclusion that its 2, air-atomization and pressure atomization. The practice test I have says 1 is the correct answer, I can't seem to find a statute to define this.
    Thanks for the video!

There are three main types of atomizers used in industry for liquid fuels that work on different principles. You have mechanical atomization, which requires a pressure to velocity conversion at the port exits to atomize the oil. You have fluid atomization, where a medium like compressed air or steam is used to break up the oil as it leaves the ports, and you have centrifugal atomization, where a rotating cup imparts centrifugal force upon the admitted oil which breaks it into droplets as it exits. I'm not sure why your practice test says one, but unless the answer is "using an external force", it's not correct.

What is the difference in using steam and air for atomizing? Any experience?

Not a whole lot. One is steam one is air. Obviously ones the system is making steam the boiler would not require an additional source for an atomizing medium (air compressor). So this helps with efficiency. If there was a steam quality issue then it could result in poor atomization.

How do you make sure your getting the right fuel to air ratio for optimal burn temperature? And… can a variable air supply with variable fuel pump be used to regular size of the flame? By variable I mean by driving my motors with variable frequency drivers. And then preset the speeds with just selector switches Hi - med- low. So they way there is no human errors in adjusting the air damper and fuel valve. My oil is preheated to improve combustion.
