I knew a girl in high school who had several tattoos. She had gotten permission from her parents to get them so she was able to get them before turning 18. She said the ankle tattoo that drifted down to her foot was by far the most painful. She also had one across her upper chest and one right above her left hip but just below the ribs. She said she would definitely get more tattoos, but she'd never get one on her foot or ankle again because it was so painful. I worked with another girl several years later that had a foot tattoo as well and she said it didn't hurt. Just goes to show how different each person's tolerance to pain can be.

Woah, that's crazy to hear. There is a massive nerve that runs over the top of the foot and it is so close to bone that I would assume it went with hands on this list. I did a 4 hr rib piece and can only do about 1-1.5 hrs on the top of my foot at once. Wild that some people don't feel that.

Professional tattooer here… The needles do NOT inject ink into the skin. What is actually happening is that the needles pierce the skin which creates a hole; when the needle(s) retract “capillary action” causes the ink to be drawn in to the holes.

I was thinking the same thing. Elbow was easy, the worst part on my entire arm, is what they call “the ditch” which is the crease on the inside of the arm at the elbow joint. But I’d honestly say my most painful overall was my calf, though that might just be because that tattoo is the most saturated of all my pieces. It IS very intriguing how different places are more/less painful depending on the person.

Funny enough my very first tattoo I ever got two of them, was the Romanian and Italian flag on my left Wrist, The Romanian Flag cause I'm Romanian, and the Italian one because the family who adopted and raised me is Italian.
One thing I will say a lot of people might not consider, is the color of that tattoo itself, will actually affect that pain level, because the metal in the tattoo or how deep it needs to go changes on the color. When I got mine I chatted a lot about it with my tattoo artist, for me personally I found the most painful pigment to be yellow, and both times I got tattoos the Artist agreed with me saying Yellow usually causes a lot of issues for people because it has to go deeper than red, or blue.

    Hey, heavily tattoo'd fella here!
The machines/needles dont actually 'inject' the ink into the skin. The needles are covered in ink when being used, when being stabbed into the skin, the needles carry that ink into the skin with them whilst opening up little holes, and they kinda just.. leave that ink behind. It's not like an injection needle that has a hole in the center for fluid to travel down.

Granted, my rib tattoo is pretty small so the most pain I felt was when my artist was tattooing towards the back of my ribs because of the vibration against my bones. My scapula tattoo was a little bigger with more detail, but still only the size my fist. Strange how different everyone perceives pain, I have a full sleeve that goes from the bottom half of my fingers with full coverage into a shoulder/back and chest panel..all color so my elbow is solidly covered as well as the inside of my bicep..I was anticipating that to be awful, and the elbow was, but the inner bicep was far easier for me. Weird enough my shoulder/back panel was by farrrr the worst for me. That's the only session I quit early on of the entire tatt.

Gotta call out number 5 the side. 5'11 back when I was 130 pounds I got my side done. 15 hour tattoo, 5 sessions, first session being about 6 hours. It goes from the bottom of my armpit to just below the top of my hip bone and from about half way around the front to the same on the back. I slept through that whole first sitting, was not bad at all. The worst part of the whole tattoo was how I had to lay. Overall tattoos don't hurt. Also have wrist neck and chest. None really hurt
