    NieR Automata pulled on my heart strings hard, but NieR Replicant had a deeper pull. Automata was like losing friends. Replicant/Geshalt was like losing family, again.

    • @Chocomunchie
      @Chocomunchie Год назад +7

      A lot of people played Automata first, but, I'm glad I wasn't one of them. I feel that having played Replicant/Gestalt first made Automata all that more impactful for me, because I caught all the callbacks (even the music) and connected lore and storybeats. [Automata Spoiler Alert] Seeing Emil again brought tears of joy, and seeing his questline's story and recalling back all that he started to remember, was such a beautiful experience that newcomers to the series would've missed out on. Not to mention understanding Popola and Devola's plight, knowing why humanity was extinct, and exploring the library near the end, gave so much more meaning to Automata's narrative. I still hold Replicant/Gestalt's story in higher regard, but, Automata just has so much more impact when you've played the first game beforehand.

      For me replicant didn't hit as hard.
      Replicant didn't feel like I or the main cast lost anything. The game felt strangely devoid of suffering for the main cast.
      Automata felt like I truly lost loved ones.
      I guess they just have different focuses. Replicant focuses on the cruelty the main character inflicts on those around him in his belligerence and ignorance.
      Automata focuses on the cruelty the world indifferently curses upon the main cast.
      Replicant has a whole guilt trip angle it takes in route B, and Automata has a whole grief angle it takes in route C.
      I'd best describe replicant and Automata in their similar but different storytelling angled as this: replicant is about what people will do to protect what they love, and Automata is about what people will do when they've lost what they love.

Before the remaster was announced, I was hoping they'd do one, and had fingers crossed they'd allow us to choose between Young and Old Nier, but, alas. Tbh, i love Gestalt, in all of its janky glory. Grumpy Nier just plays so well off of Kaine and Weiss. And the idea of ||A father trying to save his daughter|| is just so much more compelling to me than a Brother, though that is just my feelings on it.
    But i disagree that the narrative is "vastly" catered toward Brother Nier. The narrative of Nier makes much more sense and has a much higher emotional impact with Gestalt than Replicant.

      I too think that father Nier is overall a better character and makes the game experience better as well. but as some things work so much smoother with Papa Nier, some don't. not that much, at least. think of Devola and Popola: they're parental figures for both Yonah and Brother, while for Papa they're mostly like... friends? also they're twins, and the games revolves a lot on the "siblings relationship" theme. think of the blacksmith and his younger brother who both live near the junkyard. moreover, the latter one "grows out" alone after his older brother's death; exactly like young Nier. and, you know, they both become kinda obsessed over something due to the loss. in any case, I do think Papa Nier is still better. it wasn't in the original Yoko Taro's script, but he definitely fits better in the overall narrative, even despite the inconsistencies aforementioned. I would love an update for the remake that makes you choose which one to impersonate, but sadly that just won't happen

    • @InktheImpassive
      @InktheImpassive Год назад

      Though Brother NieR would make more sense with his appearance, Emil having a crush on him and that "We're friends now" moment, it's really strange to hear an old man talk about being friends but yeah, Father NieR is just as compelling.

    • @ChristianWS.
      @ChristianWS. 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@InktheImpassive People always bring the "We're friends now" moment, but with Papa Nier I've never interpreted that in the same manner as the scene with Brother Nier. Like, that scene comes across as naive with Brother Nier, like he was genuinely talking about being friends, like anime protagonists and all the baggage that entails.
      Papa Nier has the simple virtue of being older. That changes the context of the scene, even if it is identical. We are seeing not a naive boy, but a husband that lost his wife, has a dying daughter that he barely sees due to trying to find a cure for her, and is seeing someone basically give up life in front of his eyes. I don't interpret that as a genuine friendship speech, but more like a desperate attempt at stopping someone he barely know to stop giving up living.

      No dude, play the replicant remaster.
      Its not worth it to play through the jank of the original.
      Also papa nier doesnt even make much sense as the story was masterfully written for brother nier.
      Like the whole of chapter 1 you do mondane, boring jobs for cheap because the people feel bad for the kid that has a sick younger sister living alone, so they find safe odd jobs to help them out.
      But in chapter 2 he grows up and is known for killing shades so you get more killing related quests that pay like 30 times more.
      That shit doesnt make sense with papa nier so you just do shit fetch quests for no reason whatsoever and people start treating you different just because you have an eyepatch?
      Also many dialogues are weird, like the drunk woman trying to hit on you but you are a teenager and then hitting on you when you grow up or emil having a crush on the monstrosity that is papa nier's face and calling him "very cool" lmaoo.
      Its not worth it playing the original. Also replicant has many QoL stuff alongside the waaaay improved gameplay and combat (you move a lot faster for example), it also has DLC and a new ending.
      And you DO NOT want to get all the endings to og nier and then nier replicant remaster... that would be...kinda torture. Doing all the mondane stuff in the game is BORING AS FUCK.

    But also when it comes to the faces, some animation data was lost or didn't translate as well. It's the eyes in some scenes. Not emoting as well as it did before

    I don't get why people say the narrative doesn't fit papa Nier. IRL I would expect a father to do all he could to help his sick child and then do everything in his power to get her back after she is kidnapped. To not stop looking for her until his dying breath.
    With a brother, I would not blame him for resenting looking after a sick sibling. I would understand if he decided to move on with his life after searching for his sister with no luck. For all he knows she could have already died from her illness. It's harder for me to believe that a brother would still be very actively focused on looking for his sister after five years with no leads.
    And with regards to Kaine and Emil, I think an older more experienced man of the world fits a little better as an understanding father figure to them, although I admit brother Nier is better as a romance option.

    • @jase276
      @jase276 3 года назад +17

      I don't necessarily care myself, but I can see why people would say Father Nier doesn't fit. The story was written for a younger protagonist. Father Nier says and does many naive and immature stuff that an adult would never say or do. So, his character comes off as awkward when a 30-50 year old man throws tantrums like a child. Also, Kaine and Emil both have a crush on Nier, so it's even more awkward when a man old enough to be Kaine's father has a puppy love romance with her.
      And, I don't get why people play down siblings caring for one another. Yonah is his only family left, why would he just ditch her? Real life people don't just do that. As an older sibling myself, I certainly wouldn't just leave my siblings to die... That sounds sociopathic to me. Family is family.
      This is from a Japanese person who shared some insight from their point of view that I agree with:
      "Congratulations, the remaster is now available.
      I read the comments with interest.
      It seemed to me that the plots preferred by the Japanese are different from the plots preferred by many people here.
      We certainly prefer young protagonists. However...
      In a story about a father trying to save his daughter, it's a bit unappealing. Even more so when the character is a tough guy. We think of it as his "duty" to do so.
      But that's not the case with a brother and sister. We would perceive the act more as "self-sacrifice" and "devotion" than as a duty. This is even more true if the sibling is a minor who may still need a guardian.
      This "self-sacrifice" and "dedication" is also symbolic about Kaine and Emile. Perhaps we surely like tragic stories (but it depends on the individual)."

    • @MaximumAddition
      @MaximumAddition 3 года назад +4

      @@jase276 Laye but... Man I disagree with that Japanese fella. The whole thing with the brother and sister is less appealing to me. While sure there's the self-sacrifice with the brother, how does the father NOT have that? It may seem as "duty" but that doesn't devalue the love of a father committed to go to the literal ends of the world for his only child, wishing her a better future. It's more than likely cultural differences but in the end brother just feels... Too over the top for me? Different strokes for different folks either way.

      @@MaximumAddition you didnt understand what he was saying, because you're actually validating what he is saying. Hes explaining that for a father to protect his child is a duty, while for a brother to sacrifice his whole life is more tragedic and sad. The emotional impact is bigger, specially considering how young he started doing it. It also make the whole story more believable. Its super cliche to have a super strong muscly dad protecting his young daughter, weve been fed this for decades in the west. Now to get a litteral child protecting another child, it makes the situation way more tragic and actually apocalyptic (since theres no one else to protect and save everyone, its so bad that theres only another child to step up and do the right thing and he HAS to do it, showing how bad the situation is for an immature kid having no choice but try to save whats left of humanity vs the "im a man a strong muscly man and i will save everyone" cliche of every american movie ever). You are also sadly validating what sqaure usa was saying, that westerner cant understand this and need something more traditional and dumbed down for them to get into it.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the reason they change the protagonist into an adult because JRPGs were seeing as kiddie games due to the success of Western RPGs, seeing how you always play as adults? Therefore, they were becoming less popular in North America and we had to beg the developers to bring them over. Nowdays that's not the case, but I remember back then how JRPGs popularity was decaying in NA at least and how that was stressful for us who wanted to play those games.

    Personally, I preferred the premise of the story more playing as a father than a brother. It's true that the narrative supports the younger protagonist, but playing as a father broke free of what I think has become a bit too cliche for a lot of Japanese games with teenage protagonists, as if older heroes are just too unrelatable, or uninteresting. That said, I think Western games eventually started using father figures a bit too often in games after this, to the point where I think it's cliche now, too. I guess I just like the idea of a Japanese story with a central father figure, as it feels like good shift in perspective from the norm. If the narrative was tweaked a bit to suit a father more than an older brother, I do think that would be the better way to portray the story. Because of that, I do hope they make the father DLC with the VA returning.

    They should've stayed with the Gestalt MC imo. Its just a breath of fresh air to have a grumpy old dude as a protagonist on a fantasy JRPG. I havent played a lot of JRPGs tho, there are probably more JRPGs who has a grumpy old dude as a protagonist.

    Personally I I find the new version better in just about every way. Specially the gameplay. I was never really a big fan of old man nier. And mad af when I learned the Japanese version was the intended version, and featured a different character, that i found out gets cooler after a time. I suppose they made the right call considering it seems most people prefer the old man. I've always preferred the original vision of someone's work over somthing that's been...revised.
    Kaine looks so beautiful in the new version. She was fine in the old one. But I think this new one really brings out the artists Visage of her. Same for nier. Epically when he ages. His design is badass. I'm glad they changed his durpy hair also lol. Music. I'm good either or. Both are just some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard.

    Not a remaster or remake? Looks a lot like one.

      I wonder what's the difference between this and a remake
