I change the oil every 4,500 miles, never go past 5,000. Mt honda is pushing 15 years with the original engine 183,000 miles down, hoping for 300,000 miles more
We had 2010 toyota corolla over 300,000 and we donated it to our cousins and it’s still running! Only had major repairs twice in the whole lifetime that was just a little over $400! Pure gold!
Same here! I just bought a used '06 corolla, and the first thing I did after I got it home was run a flush through the crankcase(dynamic engine restoration system by BG) And it cleared out all the sludge & neglect it accumulated from the neglect from previous owners. After a major tune up, and changing all the other fluids, it runs like new again
I bought my 2014 Honda CR-V a couple years ago, change the oil every 5K, 215K miles on it, runs like a new one, no issues. I baby it, and hope to get 200K more, lol
You guys are lucky. I’m about to get my engine rebuilt. Always used mobil 1 synthetic for 13 years. Lifters make lots of noise and oil pump will eventually fail. I get low oil pressure warning. I got lifters ready to go and oil pump and a few other parts. Didn’t buy camshaft and some other things until the mechanic tells me what I need. Transmission works fine. Might get it rebuilt too soon. So I can fix the paint and focus on the outside. Thinking Of adding new carpet and Leather seats too.
Depends on highway versus city use. 10K Miles shouldn't be a problem with a lot of highway use. Unless, of course, you live in Germany (Autobahn, no speed limit).
I checked the maintenance schedule for a 24 Jetta on the VW corporate site. Sure enough, it only calls for oil changes at the first 10K, then at 20k intervals after that. The schedule still calls for trips to the shop every 10K, but only for "inspections", including checking the oil. Given the EA211s appetite for oil, every one of those 10K "inspections" will result in a charge for one, or two, quarts of oil. But topping up the oil will not get rid of the blowby and condensation accumulating in the pan.
I’m surprised only 50% want out from the crap EVs traditional automakers offer. 87% of Tesla owners will buy another. I had an uneventful comfortable 220 miles in my Model Y yesterday, no stops to charge. Haven’t used a public charger in many years.
I have a 1992 toyota pickup that Ive owned for 20 years and 260k miles. Changed the oil between 3000 to 4000 and it uses less than a quart( about 24oz) between changes. Changing oil is the cheapest and best regular maintenance you can do. It prevents so many other problems.
Got a friend who he and his wife just bought new Toyota Hylander for him, and a Venza for his wife. He took vehicles back to the dealer where he purchased, and they refused to change his oil at 5,000 miles. Told him to come back at 10,000. Insane! 😢
Same here. Toyota told me my 2023 Camry hybrid needs oil changed at 10000 intervals. Changing every 5000 myself. 30000 vehicle oil cheap engines expensive.
Took my NX250 Lexus in for first oil and filter change at 1200 miles. Lexus didn’t blink an eye and accommodated me. One year later at 2800 miles (I didn’t drive much) Lexus changed the oil and filter without any hassle. Shop around as there are many places that will gladly take your money!
10k mi is pretty standard guidance from all the OEMs for the last 10+ years, especially since they've mostly moved to full synthetic. Toyota had an issue at first with their 2.4L engine from 2008-2014 when using those 10k oil intervals, but they solved it - it was a piston design flaw.
Scotty is spitting facts! Bought an old used car last year and it has been leaking oil ever since. I just top it up every so often and it hasn't blown up so far.
Automobiles could be built to last 100+ years and millions of miles with minimal maintenance expense, but that would be really bad for businesses and tax revenue.
At around 4500 miles I'll start checking Walmart for sales and the Mobil 1 site for discount coupons. I've paid a slow as $20 for Mobil 1 oil a filter.
My saying is if you are changing full synthetic at 5,000 miles, then you are using a cheap oil. Most newer cars can go at least 7,500 miles on oil under normal use and still ok.
VW has been advertising how little maintenance their cars require. Reminds me of the 70s, when automakers were saying change the oil at 7500, but only change the filter every 15,000, with the mineral oils used at that time, and also bragging about how little maintenance their cars required. The EA211 engine in the Jetta likes to burn oil, from new. I have seen several owner's comments about their oil light coming on, at 7-8,000 miles, because the engine has burned off so much of the oil. Complaints to VW draw a response of "don't you check your oil every time you gas up, like the owner's manual says?" VW has also doubled the fluid change interval for their automatic transmissions, from 40,000 to 80,000 miles. They clearly expect all their customers to lease, so they walk way from the car before the lack of maintenance catches up with it, and they don't care what the second owner's experience with the car is.
They want people to buy EVs soon. Smart people won't give up their ICE cars voluntarily, so the ones introduced since 2012 have each been shorter lived than the ones they replaced.
Back in 1973, I was 18, bought my first car, a ‘67 VW for $400. I thought a VW never needed oil so the young gal I was, I didn’t do a thing to that car but put .28 a gallon gas into it. Four months down the road, it broke down on the bridge going over the Cumberland River near downtown Nashville where I lived. A nice trucker picked me up and dropped me off at the Interstate ramp near my apt. I called a wrecker, had it towed to the VW Dealership. Threw a rod is what they said due to no oil. It was no water it needed…mixed that one up! Boy, did I learn an automotive lesson and survived a ride with a complete stranger…wouldn’t trust that to happen today.
@@richki.24 the Tiguan uses the EA888. One generation was notorious for oil consumption. Another generation was notorious for timing chain failures. The third generation, which has been used the last several years, seems to have those issues sorted out. The Gen 3 EA888 still has some water pump issues. A friend of mine with a 2016 Golf had to replace his water pump, but then the car had about 150K on it at the time, so he wasn't upset about the failure. You didn't say how many miles your 2021 has on it. You also did not say how often you have the oil and transmission fluid changed. The maintenance schedule for that year Tiguan is the same 10k, then 20k oil change intervals as the 2024 Jetta EA211.
3 car chg stations in my country town by huge to us corporate office. Every 2 weeks I go to my cdt. Union. Look over to the station. Only two times I saw it used. 2 tweety bird size cars charging.ah maybe one more just pulling out. 3 cars in about 3 years? Wow!
KTM motorcycles above 700cc recommend going 9300 miles between oil changes. Note: they do require their specific synthetic oil. We recommend changing the engine oil on any motorcycle between 4500 and 5000 miles. You are correct, oil gets dirty from the intake, fuel contamination, air filter leakage, contaminants in the fuel, carbon sludge, and water from condensation build-up from taking short trips. We tell our customers to check the oil view window weekly. If gets low or dirty, it's time to have an oil change. Maybe cars should have a view window for their oil...
@scottykilmer, according to the tire industry & independent testing including Car & Driver mag test. The new tires ALWAYS go on the rear EVEN in a front wheel drive car because when it comes to lift/hydroplaning the rear lifts and it’s over! But if the rear grips and stays planted it’s easier to control the vehicle. 🎉
Bought a 24 ranger. I was planning ontowing a 6x12 trailer. But before i could i looked at the manual. I don't remember how many miles i needed to break in before my first tow.i think 3k and then do an oil change. The dealership kept telling me i didn't need to do it. I'm like the manual says it is happening. Last thing i need is to void the warranty. They claimed it wouldn't but hey I'm gonna always play it safe
Had a 1992 Ford Aerostar. Changed oil every 3500 to 4000 miles. Had 640000 miles on it when my son was involved in an accident and it was totaled. Lucky for him, it was not his fault.
It was recommended that you had your first oil change at 500 miles on cars built in the 60s, 70s, and even into the 80s. There would be some small metal shavings that would be in the engine from the manufacturing process that would collect in the oil filter. It could take two or more oil changes at that interval to completely get them out of there.
Royal Enfield motorcycles still require that and a valve adjustment at 500 miles at the dealer ($550) or they void your warranty. Old school manufacturing there. Modern motors don't typically need that. Clearances are tight, precise, consistent and torqued fasteners are also consistent. The 3000 mile oil change is 1930s US logic....based on Model As and Chevys that used oil to clean the engine and clump up (non detergent) getting the swarthy out of the engine. No oil filters either.

The Italian Tune Up works by allowing the engine heat to burn off condensate moisture, and coke (burn oil, and unburnt gas) to dissolve. Thus cleaning the valve sets and fuel injectors and spark plugs.
If you do almost all highway with a newer vehicle at reasonable speeds, it's not unreasonable to go 10,000 miles. Always follow recommendations from the manufacturer and split the difference like I do at 7,500-8,000 miles.
I go 3,000 full synthetic 5w20 in my car and had over 302,000 mile never problem not oil burn not oil leak keep change you oil over 5,000 you will see valve cover gaskets leaking rear main seal leak but old edition don’t break you engine
i just learned on youtube university...there is no such thing as full synthetic its a merketing scheme that makes folks feel better....look it up. just get sybthetic blend for 5 or 10k
That makes sense. When I was a courier, I averaged 100-150mi./day. I usually ended up changing the oil every 4-6wks., But with 267k mi., my car still doesn't burn or leak oil just b/c i stayed on top on the fluid change intervals. esp. the oil & ATF
I worked courier jobs for a couple of companies 7500 mile oil changed conventional oil and this was 10!years ago One sold off Ford Ranger with 236000 miles run well some life left in them Other has Rangers and Ford Vans go past 300000. With results like that they must be doing something right
All the chat about oil changes is very boring you would think it cost $1000 a quart. Due to all the comments I am seeing a therapist for my oil change obsession. I have a 2000 V6 Toyota Camry Azura, the logbook states to change the oil/service the car (normal driving), every 15,000 km, I play it safe and I have my car serviced it every 8,000km.
They're also a prime target for copper thieves - they'll walk away with maybe $3000 of copper and then the charger company has to spend 10-100x that to replace it!

Combine that with the fact that there's no gasoline coming out of a pump right in front of you which you could spray an approaching attacker with, and the fact that EV chargers are now designed to hold tightly onto the charge port to prevent Karens from unplugging you, so now if you try to lock yourself in your car while charging and then criminals show up, you are stuck there, because there's no emergency release and so you can't drive away while it is still plugged in because you will destroy your whole car.

Honestly I follow with my car tells me to do. It's a Honda with the maintenance minder system that tells you when to change oil based on your driving habits. If I drive like a maniac in the city, it's going to tell me to change it every 5 to 6000 miles, but if I drive conservatively with mixed driving or highway driving, which I usually do, I can get to 7500 to 8000 miles before the car tells me to change oil. There's only two things I don't listen to; skipping out on an oil filter change (known as A1 on maitenance minder), and I change my CVT fluid every 25,000 miles (usually maitenance minder comes up every 50,000 miles to service CVT).
another thought - I live in a condo complex, can't do much work on my car due to HOA - which - HOA's are from hell - besides that - it is a great idea for my car to be looked at by a mechanic I trust every 5,000 miles - and give me a print out of what seems to be needed in the near future - how much wear is on the brakes, battery test, etc -
last I knew, the Post Office was doing 6 month oil changes on their old Iron Duke LLV trucks, using the cheapest oil available. Mileage didn't figure into it.
When I was a young dumb car owner, I neglected my 2012 VW Passat's maintenance. I got it at 100,000 miles, and after putting 50,000 miles on it, I finally learned a little about cars and checked the oil. It was BONE DRY but running fine. I threw some oil in it and it's gone another 60,000 miles (with oil changes every 5k and no major maintenance) I hear a lot of bad things about VW reliability, but I'll always be grateful that mine was stronger than I was stupid.
Don't forget the auto trans fluid and transfer case fluid as well as all wheel drive fluids. Those need changed about every 30,000 and the newer all wheel drive differentials need it every 10,000 !

I buy long lasting 20,000 mile oil filter and change it 20,000 miles but siphon the oil out every 3000 miles as thats when it starts to look dirty in the turbo engine. Only get under car when its time for oil filter change.
I bought a new vehicle and changed the oil for first change at 1800 miles. Then every 5000 after that. Too often? I would rather err on the conservative side. Oil and filters are inexpensive.
Yeah...I bought a GR Corolla in December and did my first change at 1200 miles, then 5k next. Probably going to go with 3500-4000 miles between changes because of how high strung this engine is.
I worked on MACK trucks in the 90's and had a driver come in for an oil change and chassis lube. He had 55,000 miles on the oil and I immediately pulled a sample and sent it to our Lab. Changed the 12 gallons of engine oil, lubricated dozens of grease points, adjusted the clutch and clutch brake then waited. Oil analysis came back all within normal ranges except for slightly elevated levels of silica and soot. Steady state driving does wonders. Go figure. Lol
The VW oil change interval is highly flawed! Most engine wear occurs in the first 1000 miles.I ALWAYS change my oil at the 1200 mile mark on new cars because I know this. There have been lots of studies on the subject and you have to get that break-in oil swapped because it will have a lot more metallic particles suspended
I can only state some facts. I am in the UK and in 2009 I bought a 2007 Audi A6 2.0 Tdi diesel with 17k miles on it. In 2023 I sold it with 332k miles on it. Apart from maintenance, one turbo and one glow plug the engine never had any internal repairs and was totally original. When I bought it the oil consumption was about 3,000 miles per half litre of oil, and when I sold it the oil consumption was still about 3,000 miles per half litre of oil, and it still sounded and drove as new and still averaged over 40mpg (imperial). It had Liqui Moly Ceratec additive in the oil for the last few years. Oil change interval was as the car's computer flagged up, every 18,000 miles or so. I can only state the facts in my case, but 18,000 mile oil changes obviously did it no harm.
I own a 2023 vw jetta. Dealer gave me 2 oil change. 1st 8500mills ,not a problem brought back at 16.000 miles the wouldn't do it for free. Said I have to pay for it. I told them off it's my car not yours. I set the distance in the dash to 5,000 miles 6mo. They had 10,000 and 12mo on oil. I drove my car from florida to long Island when I left no oil consumption and no oil consumption drove 1200+1200 24.000 miles not a problem. I love my jetta
Cars meanwhile have one million sensors but no sensor for oil viscosity and contamination? iMHO that would take out the questioning of when to change oil …I do know there are sensors for industrial machinery doing exactly that. Especially to prevent oil shearing.

Running a European shop I had a Passat towed in with 90K and a locked up engine. VW told them no help even though they had every oil change done by the dealer on time every 10K. You couldn’t give me a VW to this day.
Scotty, I think these new 0W-8 and 0W-16 oils are too thin for reliability concerns. I want my Toyotas to last 300K and longer. Can I use 0W-16 in Winter and 0W-20 in Spring, Summer, and Fall in South Texas on the new 2025 Camry or Crown Signia? I know you say the valvetrain needs it, but I don't trust the EPA.

My brother in-law only gave his Chevy Cavalier first oil change at 38k next one at 96k then another around 140k 😂 he was right oil is only to keep it from locking up. He was right it lasted around 200k he said it would still have went out around those miles even if he changed it like normal. Most cars are made to last around 250k no matter what
if your that confident car companies, put your money were your mouth is about when to change the oil..put a lifetime warranty on the engine with no charge of any kind when it goes..also no questions asked..the service records will speak for itself

New car, change at 800 miles with same oil. New motorcycle @ 600 miles then 1200. Then normal oil change on car and 500 miles early on high performance motorcycles I own. Did so with mine and mechanics said, "Best and cheapest insurance on engine lifespan" Thrashing it for 343,000 miles before tossing head gasket and not burning oil yet... Toyota it was.
People just don't think before doing anything these days, Scotty. Failed promise after failed promise, contradiction and after contradiction, and absolute hypocrisy has me laughing my heinie off.
The last VW product I had was an 87 Quantum and it was overly complicated and unreliable and designed intentionally to be difficult to repair. The shop manual had a special VW tool on every page. Never again.
BMW has always pushing their oil change interval is around 2 years or 25000km. Then they also sell you 3 years prepaid service plan. It will be lucky to get more than 1 oil change free out of that 3 years.
Be careful with percentages. If I had an apple stand that sold one apple on the first day, and two apples on the second day, the business percentage increase would be 100%.
So even with full synthetic ? I was told between 7000-10000 miles I drive no where . I think it really depends upon how much use to put on the vehicle.

Oil change intervals increasing isn't being done in the interest of maximizing engine health. It's meant to maximize selling you new engines.
Also to minimize costs to business that lease cars new cars for no more than 3 years (e.g. rental companies).

We had 2010 toyota corolla over 300,000 and we donated it to our cousins and it’s still running! Only had major repairs twice in the whole lifetime that was just a little over $400! Pure gold!

I just bought a used '06 corolla, and the first thing I did after I got it home was run a flush through the crankcase(dynamic engine restoration system by BG) And it cleared out all the sludge & neglect it accumulated from the neglect from previous owners. After a major tune up, and changing all the other fluids, it runs like new again

You guys are lucky. I’m about to get my engine rebuilt. Always used mobil 1 synthetic for 13 years. Lifters make lots of noise and oil pump will eventually fail. I get low oil pressure warning. I got lifters ready to go and oil pump and a few other parts. Didn’t buy camshaft and some other things until the mechanic tells me what I need. Transmission works fine. Might get it rebuilt too soon. So I can fix the paint and focus on the outside. Thinking Of adding new carpet and Leather seats too.

Depends on highway versus city use. 10K Miles shouldn't be a problem with a lot of highway use. Unless, of course, you live in Germany (Autobahn, no speed limit).
I checked the maintenance schedule for a 24 Jetta on the VW corporate site. Sure enough, it only calls for oil changes at the first 10K, then at 20k intervals after that. The schedule still calls for trips to the shop every 10K, but only for "inspections", including checking the oil. Given the EA211s appetite for oil, every one of those 10K "inspections" will result in a charge for one, or two, quarts of oil. But topping up the oil will not get rid of the blowby and condensation accumulating in the pan.

I have a 1992 toyota pickup that Ive owned for 20 years and 260k miles. Changed the oil between 3000 to 4000 and it uses less than a quart( about 24oz) between changes. Changing oil is the cheapest and best regular maintenance you can do. It prevents so many other problems.

Got a friend who he and his wife just bought new Toyota Hylander for him, and a Venza for his wife. He took vehicles back to the dealer where he purchased, and they refused to change his oil at 5,000 miles. Told him to come back at 10,000. Insane! 😢
Same here. Toyota told me my 2023 Camry hybrid needs oil changed at 10000 intervals. Changing every 5000 myself. 30000 vehicle oil cheap engines expensive.

Took my NX250 Lexus in for first oil and filter change at 1200 miles. Lexus didn’t blink an eye and accommodated me. One year later at 2800 miles (I didn’t drive much) Lexus changed the oil and filter without any hassle. Shop around as there are many places that will gladly take your money!
10k mi is pretty standard guidance from all the OEMs for the last 10+ years, especially since they've mostly moved to full synthetic. Toyota had an issue at first with their 2.4L engine from 2008-2014 when using those 10k oil intervals, but they solved it - it was a piston design flaw.

My saying is if you are changing full synthetic at 5,000 miles, then you are using a cheap oil. Most newer cars can go at least 7,500 miles on oil under normal use and still ok.

VW has been advertising how little maintenance their cars require. Reminds me of the 70s, when automakers were saying change the oil at 7500, but only change the filter every 15,000, with the mineral oils used at that time, and also bragging about how little maintenance their cars required. The EA211 engine in the Jetta likes to burn oil, from new. I have seen several owner's comments about their oil light coming on, at 7-8,000 miles, because the engine has burned off so much of the oil. Complaints to VW draw a response of "don't you check your oil every time you gas up, like the owner's manual says?" VW has also doubled the fluid change interval for their automatic transmissions, from 40,000 to 80,000 miles. They clearly expect all their customers to lease, so they walk way from the car before the lack of maintenance catches up with it, and they don't care what the second owner's experience with the car is.

Back in 1973, I was 18, bought my first car, a ‘67 VW for $400. I thought a VW never needed oil so the young gal I was, I didn’t do a thing to that car but put .28 a gallon gas into it. Four months down the road, it broke down on the bridge going over the Cumberland River near downtown Nashville where I lived. A nice trucker picked me up and dropped me off at the Interstate ramp near my apt. I called a wrecker, had it towed to the VW Dealership. Threw a rod is what they said due to no oil. It was no water it needed…mixed that one up! Boy, did I learn an automotive lesson and survived a ride with a complete stranger…wouldn’t trust that to happen today.
@@richki.24 the Tiguan uses the EA888. One generation was notorious for oil consumption. Another generation was notorious for timing chain failures. The third generation, which has been used the last several years, seems to have those issues sorted out. The Gen 3 EA888 still has some water pump issues. A friend of mine with a 2016 Golf had to replace his water pump, but then the car had about 150K on it at the time, so he wasn't upset about the failure.
You didn't say how many miles your 2021 has on it. You also did not say how often you have the oil and transmission fluid changed. The maintenance schedule for that year Tiguan is the same 10k, then 20k oil change intervals as the 2024 Jetta EA211.

KTM motorcycles above 700cc recommend going 9300 miles between oil changes. Note: they do require their specific synthetic oil. We recommend changing the engine oil on any motorcycle between 4500 and 5000 miles. You are correct, oil gets dirty from the intake, fuel contamination, air filter leakage, contaminants in the fuel, carbon sludge, and water from condensation build-up from taking short trips. We tell our customers to check the oil view window weekly. If gets low or dirty, it's time to have an oil change. Maybe cars should have a view window for their oil...

The new tires ALWAYS go on the rear EVEN in a front wheel drive car because when it comes to lift/hydroplaning the rear lifts and it’s over! But if the rear grips and stays planted it’s easier to control the vehicle. 🎉

Bought a 24 ranger. I was planning ontowing a 6x12 trailer. But before i could i looked at the manual. I don't remember how many miles i needed to break in before my first tow.i think 3k and then do an oil change. The dealership kept telling me i didn't need to do it. I'm like the manual says it is happening. Last thing i need is to void the warranty. They claimed it wouldn't but hey I'm gonna always play it safe

Had a 1992 Ford Aerostar. Changed oil every 3500 to 4000 miles. Had 640000 miles on it when my son was involved in an accident and it was totaled. Lucky for him, it was not his fault.
It was recommended that you had your first oil change at 500 miles on cars built in the 60s, 70s, and even into the 80s. There would be some small metal shavings that would be in the engine from the manufacturing process that would collect in the oil filter. It could take two or more oil changes at that interval to completely get them out of there.
Royal Enfield motorcycles still require that and a valve adjustment at 500 miles at the dealer ($550) or they void your warranty. Old school manufacturing there.
Modern motors don't typically need that. Clearances are tight, precise, consistent and torqued fasteners are also consistent.
The 3000 mile oil change is 1930s US logic....based on Model As and Chevys that used oil to clean the engine and clump up (non detergent) getting the swarthy out of the engine. No oil filters either.

The Italian Tune Up works by allowing the engine heat to burn off condensate moisture, and coke (burn oil, and unburnt gas) to dissolve. Thus cleaning the valve sets and fuel injectors and spark plugs.
I haven't changed my filter 12000 miles. Used the 150k oil to prevent breakdown. Keeo adding it. Will need to do it soon

If you do almost all highway with a newer vehicle at reasonable speeds, it's not unreasonable to go 10,000 miles. Always follow recommendations from the manufacturer and split the difference like I do at 7,500-8,000 miles.

I change the oil on my VW diesel truck every year in the UK regardless of miles driven... which is usually under 6,000 miles.
I hate to say it but the oil change interval on my 2011 Jetta TDI was 15000 km and at 420000 km it didn't use a drop of oil between those changes.
I change the oil on my 2010 VW Passat every 4k miles. It now has almost 215k miles on it and no issues.
Honestly I follow with my car tells me to do. It's a Honda with the maintenance minder system that tells you when to change oil based on your driving habits. If I drive like a maniac in the city, it's going to tell me to change it every 5 to 6000 miles, but if I drive conservatively with mixed driving or highway driving, which I usually do, I can get to 7500 to 8000 miles before the car tells me to change oil. There's only two things I don't listen to; skipping out on an oil filter change (known as A1 on maitenance minder), and I change my CVT fluid every 25,000 miles (usually maitenance minder comes up every 50,000 miles to service CVT).
20,000 miles is crazy for any engine, but especially the turbocharged ones vw uses in many cars.

another thought - I live in a condo complex, can't do much work on my car due to HOA - which - HOA's are from hell - besides that - it is a great idea for my car to be looked at by a mechanic I trust every 5,000 miles - and give me a print out of what seems to be needed in the near future - how much wear is on the brakes, battery test, etc -

last I knew, the Post Office was doing 6 month oil changes on their old Iron Duke LLV trucks, using the cheapest oil available. Mileage didn't figure into it.

When I was a young dumb car owner, I neglected my 2012 VW Passat's maintenance. I got it at 100,000 miles, and after putting 50,000 miles on it, I finally learned a little about cars and checked the oil. It was BONE DRY but running fine. I threw some oil in it and it's gone another 60,000 miles (with oil changes every 5k and no major maintenance)
I hear a lot of bad things about VW reliability, but I'll always be grateful that mine was stronger than I was stupid.
An oil analysis costs about $35, and can tell you if you're changing your oil too often or not often enough.

Don't forget the auto trans fluid and transfer case fluid as well as all wheel drive fluids. Those need changed about every 30,000 and the newer all wheel drive differentials need it every 10,000 !

I buy long lasting 20,000 mile oil filter and change it 20,000 miles but siphon the oil out every 3000 miles as thats when it starts to look dirty in the turbo engine. Only get under car when its time for oil filter change.
I bought a new vehicle and changed the oil for first change at 1800 miles. Then every 5000 after that. Too often? I would rather err on the conservative side. Oil and filters are inexpensive.

I worked on MACK trucks in the 90's and had a driver come in for an oil change and chassis lube. He had 55,000 miles on the oil and I immediately pulled a sample and sent it to our Lab. Changed the 12 gallons of engine oil, lubricated dozens of grease points, adjusted the clutch and clutch brake then waited. Oil analysis came back all within normal ranges except for slightly elevated levels of silica and soot. Steady state driving does wonders. Go figure. Lol
The VW oil change interval is highly flawed! Most engine wear occurs in the first 1000 miles.I ALWAYS change my oil at the 1200 mile mark on new cars because I know this. There have been lots of studies on the subject and you have to get that break-in oil swapped because it will have a lot more metallic particles suspended

I can only state some facts. I am in the UK and in 2009 I bought a 2007 Audi A6 2.0 Tdi diesel with 17k miles on it. In 2023 I sold it with 332k miles on it. Apart from maintenance, one turbo and one glow plug the engine never had any internal repairs and was totally original. When I bought it the oil consumption was about 3,000 miles per half litre of oil, and when I sold it the oil consumption was still about 3,000 miles per half litre of oil, and it still sounded and drove as new and still averaged over 40mpg (imperial). It had Liqui Moly Ceratec additive in the oil for the last few years. Oil change interval was as the car's computer flagged up, every 18,000 miles or so. I can only state the facts in my case, but 18,000 mile oil changes obviously did it no harm.

Since EGR semis can't go long intervals without changing the oil. Eventually the carbon chains become large enough to damage the engine.

I own a 2023 vw jetta. Dealer gave me 2 oil change. 1st 8500mills ,not a problem brought back at 16.000 miles the wouldn't do it for free. Said I have to pay for it. I told them off it's my car not yours. I set the distance in the dash to 5,000 miles 6mo. They had 10,000 and 12mo on oil. I drove my car from florida to long Island when I left no oil consumption and no oil consumption drove 1200+1200 24.000 miles not a problem. I love my jetta

Running a European shop I had a Passat towed in with 90K and a locked up engine. VW told them no help even though they had every oil change done by the dealer on time every 10K. You couldn’t give me a VW to this day.

My brother in-law only gave his Chevy Cavalier first oil change at 38k next one at 96k then another around 140k 😂 he was right oil is only to keep it from locking up. He was right it lasted around 200k he said it would still have went out around those miles even if he changed it like normal. Most cars are made to last around 250k no matter what

The last VW product I had was an 87 Quantum and it was overly complicated and unreliable and designed intentionally to be difficult to repair. The shop manual had a special VW tool on every page. Never again.

BMW has always pushing their oil change interval is around 2 years or 25000km. Then they also sell you 3 years prepaid service plan. It will be lucky to get more than 1 oil change free out of that 3 years.

Be careful with percentages. If I had an apple stand that sold one apple on the first day, and two apples on the second day, the business percentage increase would be 100%.
So even with full synthetic ? I was told between 7000-10000 miles I drive no where . I think it really depends upon how much use to put on the vehicle.
