This reworking has a classier, more elegant, upscale sound in my opinion, than the old version, which bordered on cheesy at times. The first notes of the POTO refrain are goose bump inducing.
He really is wonderful. I met him a couple years ago after seeing him in LND and he is just as big a POTO nerd as the rest of us! We both geeked out over the show for a few minutes before he had to book it. He is truly a sweetheart.
I didn't really have an issue with the whole "TEN YEARS OLD" thing, but the song itself is just so much better now and the reprise of the "singing scales" leitmotif from the first show's title track is such an awesome touch.
The Phantom of the Opera piano bit was BREATHTAKING I loved it so much yet I’m very upset they changed the tune. The old version was my favorite and will always be 😢
Krystal Harwood was the gorilla you meant the big skeletal figure in this song? Apparently they do exist in this cast because Imm pretty sure I saw a video of Bronson taking us backstage and he showed us the massive skeletal monster thing, saying that it needs up to three people to use. So I think they still use it for this cast but maybe something happens to it, due to the location they are touring at, possibly the size of the stage?
I really dig the changes they made to "The Beauty Underneath". It's much more gothic sounding now and it doesn't rely quite so heavily on the earlier established leitmotifs as the original version did. It's honestly gone from what registered with me as kind of a misfire to what might be my favorite song in the show (barring maybe "Beneath a Moonless Sky" and "When I Hear You Sing".
He's far too aggressive at times for Erik who is meant to have the upper-hand for this entire musical right until the end when he is no longer in control; he never calculated for Meg betraying him and someone kidnapping Gustav. Having him aggressive and with an uncontrolled temper the whole time kind of ruins this tonal shift entirely
Such an improvement from the previous versions. Making gustave sings and plays the phantom song further clarify him as erik and christine son. Any improvement is good to attain a perfect LND cos i really love LND.
Me:Watches Someone in the video 2:16:Its starting its starting(This would be me to my friends if we were thereXD) Edit:Dude on 3:03 when he says "Sing,SING FOR ME!!!!"that litearly scared the heck outa me😲
I enjoy Gustave singing the notes from 'Phantom of The Opera, but I hate the changes in the rest of the song. It was really disappointing to me when I saw it Live
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 ¡¡¡OOOOOMG!!! Realmente épico escuchar a Gustave cantar las notas de Soprano del Musical Principal... Siempre quise escucharlo cantar esa parte, es ÉPICO!!! Definitivamente esa parte debe estar en todas las interpretaciones de esta canción... ¡¡¡PERFECT!!! 😊👏🏻👏🏻😊👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 TIENES EL MUSICAL COMPLETO? XOXO desde #Ecuador🇪🇨🙋🏻♂️❄🎄
No, but you have to have the "Ten Years Oooooooold!!!!" with the swelling Gustave leitmotif. I understand the intentions, that they wanted to include the POTO leitmotif, but I liked it the way it was.
So true. I saw Bronson once in Dallas and went back for more 3 times in two weeks. Bronson Norris Murphy is the most beautiful Phantom I have seen/heard since Hugh Panaro. No disrespect for Michael Gillis, who is wonderful, but watch this, and then go watch BNM do this scene. The singing, the characterization, the mannerisms, the energy...totally different. MG seems like a very human Phantom, where BNM’s Phantom has that inhuman, elegant, otherworldly quality that makes the character so magical. Every second of this song when BNM performs it gives goosebumps.
I had the luck to see BNM while he was the understudy for Gardar during the first few days of the tour when it first started in Detroit and he completely blew me away with his voice
I might have been at this one... oh pre corona world.... this equally charges and bums me simultaneously. Once I renamed all the songs somewhat facetiously, this one was called “call cps song”
Andrew L. Webber wrote this version of Beauty Underneath for his 70th birthday. I didn't like it that much when I first heard it but it grew on me and now I love it
It had a longer & better lead in, the melody was arranged different & the words are different in this version. This isn't terrible but I prefer the original.
When are they going to accept that this song is beyond repair and ditch it? This version sounds even MORE like Phantom has impure thoughts about Gustav. I like the musical arrangement better, I guess. Ugh.
Or maybe you can try to not make everything dirty and see what you want to see? It's talking about the beauty underneath Erik's surface, which was Christine's original issue with him. If you're reading something impure into it, you should probably reflect upon yourself.

I also like the new blocking and staging. It feels more like the phantom is taking Gustav on a tour rather than things kinda just moving around
The way they he say: Sing for me! OH GOD THIS IS WITH SOUL!
This Michael guy who is playing The Phantom is having so much fun to play our beloved character.
He really is wonderful. I met him a couple years ago after seeing him in LND and he is just as big a POTO nerd as the rest of us! We both geeked out over the show for a few minutes before he had to book it. He is truly a sweetheart.
R.I.P. "ten years oOoOoOoOooooOOOOOOOLD!!!!!" (😂 jk Love the changes)
The weird thing is, they still said, "he plays like me" in Hamburg, but they got rid of it in this show
Yeah... I noticed that. Strange.
I like the changes, but I really miss the beginning portion with the guitar etc...

Luv this version better as well. Ben Lewis & Casey Lyon Audio if Great too!!!!!!!
I sat too close to ALW to even dare pull my phone out! Thank you for filming
You sat near the composer himself?
Sooo glad that someone finally got a recording of Michael Gillis as the Phantom. He’s my favorite and sooo underrated!
He is a great actor, his voice is not as strong/loud as Branson or Gardar, but it has more emotions. I love his version.
Michael is the only understudy (later turned alternate) that I like

I just saw this and the song changed. IT IS SO GOOD.
I just saw this a couple days ago. I really enjoyed it! The set was phenomenal.
3:07 I was not ready for that
wow that was really amazing
I love Michael Gillis!!

Do you have a full video of this night? I was there and I would love to relive it!
Unfortunately no. I only recorded this. Sorry!
Glad they got rid of the kid saying 'yes' all the time lol
Omg
Ehh, I can take or leave it as long as it doesn't sound like the concept album (JFC, it sounded like he was c*mming).

I was at that show but the end is so sad!
I didn't know that they added some more lyrics to the still!
Australian version was more rocky. Not sure if this is an improvement.
I'm certain that I hear Christine's voice here.

Does anyone have lyrics for this I can kinda understand the Phantom’s lines but not Gustave’s
Best version ever
Do you have the full show
Bronson Norris Murphy kills this role..
Justin squires This isn't him but you're entirely right.
If it was BNM i would have watched it more than once. It's funny how once you see him in this role everyone else is instantly inferior
He went the extra mile on "SING FOR ME!!!"

Is it possible to obtain the original footage of these? Please let me know!
This doesnt feel as smooth as the Australian version

Can someone explain to me why they changed the song? The first version was so much better
I asked Rachel Ann Moore, and she said that ALW thought it was more rocky... which I thought the opposite of.
The original is way better lol
SarryXD S.P. yah I liked the original one better too

I much prefer this new one tbh, fits better with the tone and genre of the musical. The first version sounded kind of cringey imo.
Were you sitting in the balcony? I just bought seats and I'm wondering how the view is😅 thanks for uploading this! 😄
Yes, I was siting in the balcony. Behind the Loges.
Why an new Text??
2:24
по моему Эрик так замечтался что в мальчике видит и слышит Кристину
OMG Y’all are probably not gonna believe this but the kid in this is literally in my classroom I’m not even joking his name is Christian
How old is he now omg
the piano song..isnt that from the original? hahahaha i knew that! jk
Caught Nod to POTO
I wish this was Gardar Thor Cortes instead
Same. It was supposed to be him, but he must've been sick or something. Gillis took his spot as understudy.
I just wish they had left this song as the original version. Didn't care for this one.
How come?
It had a longer & better lead in, the melody was arranged different & the words are different in this version. This isn't terrible but I prefer the original.
@@clayton1117 And Bronson Norris Murphy must have decided not to be in this performance
и ещё у Эрика не все дома с головой не в порядке ему бы к психиатру лучше бы сходить!
Like the Australian version better
