How to properly set white balance for video - or not!

  • I struggle with setting white balance, mainly because I'm lazy. So I thought I'd do some simple tests on 3 different ways to set it.
What I learned shocked me, but it really shouldn't have. The final result should really have been a foregone conclusion, but I'm stupid! And lazy :)
Interestingly, I've had more than one person tell me they preferred the colour from the grey card used to set a custom white balance. Although I didn't like the colour results, it just goes to show that everyone has a different preference!
I used the Sony A7iv and from what I read that has its own issues with colour, so you might get different results with your setup. I'll be continuing to learn more about colour balance and grading and documenting what I find on this channel.

I liked the custom WB with the card. It looked a lot more natural and much better skin tone than both the others.

That’s interesting. I found it a bit pink/warm for my taste, but I can see that generally it’s a simple and good enough technique. In truth all the settings would do just fine because you normally view them in isolation anyway. You don’t normally see three versions of a clip with different colour settings.
I don’t need totally accurate colour really, but I do want to learn how to get it for when I do need it. That’s why I’ll be doing a bunch of tests over the next few weeks.

@@mygoodstuffreviewed sounds good mate. I will admit, I was a bit shocked by the colourchecker result. For me that looked very pale, washed out, lacked contrast, just overall mediocre. I would have really thought it to be a lot more accurate. Yes, I am a fan of warmer tones, esp skin tones.

@ScottRadfordChisholm Funnily enough it looks more like me than the others! Yes, I’m a bit grey in the face sometimes, with an underlying slight tan/olive tone. I look healthier when I’ve had some sun!

Calibrite did not look natural in the video, personally, I thnk the Grey Card had the best result., I was expecting the opposite to be honest.

I’m going to redo the test because when I watch the video on different monitors and my phone I see that the Calibrite version looks off. On the monitor I used originally it looked ok.
I still have a lot to learn about colour balance and grading so it’s good to hear feedback from others. Thanks for your comment.
