I just picked one up at a on line yard sale. After using it for the first time today, I'd do two things next time: soak the disk in warm water and spray it with oil. The pasta should come out beautiful from the start. I love my $100 deal.
Every time I watch her video I would look for correct instructions in the comment section lol
Thank you so much for the tip. it really helped me sprayed the disk with little oil. Cheers!
Hi... i bought a second hand machine, without recipe book and measuring cups. Do u mind sharing with me the recipe book and measuring cups amount so i can also appreciate the machine? It doesnt work with my own noodle recipe. Hope u r willing to help here. Thank you in advance.
@@fifa84 Yes of course I'll share. I need to look for the book, scann it create a sendable doc. I hope I can post it here.

If you let the machine run through the full cycle it will grab the remain bits of dough. You’ll jam the extractor if you jam the remaining dough into it. The only thing I do is open the cover when there’s 3 minutes remaining and remove the dough stuck on the blades, it’ll then grab the small bits of dough and extract in the last 3 minutes. Also, you need to pour the liquid in slowing into the machine vs a fast pour. The disk should also be attached to the unit before placing the cover on it. There’s a notch that the disk needs to line up and click into before the cover. If you’re going to judge the performance of a machine you need to use it per the manufacturers instructions rather than winging it.
I let my pasta dough rest for 10-15 minutes first. Maybe manual mode is better. Also, cut the ugly noodles at the beginning and put them back in. 🤷🏽♂️😊👍🏽
Yup the gluten gives better elasticity after resting..
So happy whenever I don’t see Justin Y as a top comment. Thank you for your service.
She doesn’t have much kitchen experience.
stuart taylor
She’s a chef and, I believe, a restaurant owner. She just tries to follow the devices instructions as they are given and not add her culinary expertise unless it can’t possibly work without it.
If something says it can compete with a chef, or better than homemade, it shouldn’t require you to know the best way to do it, because if you knew better, you’d just do it by hand and save money
Genius level. 100
Yes it is. I love mine
I have a large herb garden and "flavored pasta" is incredible. Marjoram, basil, tarragon, sage, oregano, parsley. Also lime zest pasta - great with fish or hearty chicken and sausage (with juices).
😱🤩
What wonderful ideas!
For your ramen noodles you will find a huge difference if you use baked baking soda - I bake quite a bit and then it is perfect in an air tight container for later use. I have the original machine and love it. I do adjust the amount of water because it really depends on the weather as to how much liquid is needed.
And the flour being used
I have had this item for a few years now. Pro Tip (1) If you are not using a pasta flour to make your noodles, I.E. AP flour always add gluten otherwise the noodles will not hold together, and you won't get that nice pasta mouth feel you are accustomed to with normal noodles. I add 1 to 1.5 tsp of gluten add in when I make a 2 cup batch. Pro Tip (2) noodles are ugly at the start and end of the run. I put the pressed noodles right back in until they start looking good. When the run is at the end and the noodles start to look funny I turn it off and discard. You will waste about a 1\4 cup of product but noodles will have much better consistency.
On another channel someone said bread flour works better than AP.. If you have the urge to experiment I'd like to hear the results. I'm on the fence about an automatic maker, I have always made by hand in the past resting my dough for 90 mins before putting through the hand crank. In my new place I can't clamp my crank down due to the design of the counter top which is why I was looking at the automatics.
@@TheEvilmooseofdoom Hi there, Bread Flour = AP flour with more gluten. If you take AP flour and add 1-2 tsp of gluten additive you have amazing pasta. If using bread flour, I would half that.
@@richsam287 Thank you!
Just used my machine for the first time. LOVE IT!!! So easy to use. I am surprised this video shows so much dough left in the machine. Mine was nearly empty.
You need to turn the cutter around the other way also, as you're cutting with the flow of the pasta being extruded, instead of against it. I've had the model above this one the automatically weighs how much liquid you need to flour for over 2 years now, awesome machine and from what other people are saying (I'll agree with here) the first 5-10cm cut off and put back into the machine to allow this to be reincorporated. Also, it's not meant to be a dough, it's suppose to be a damp crumbly mix, as the pressure through the die will force the mix to compress and hold it's shape. There shouldn't be that much dough left in your machine. Using a spice grinder to grind up your own spices into the flour is great, different vegetable juices also are amazing as well. TIP - using an egg in most noodle recipes if you're not using semolina flour and want an eggless flour, and definitely a teaspoon of vegetable oil will also give you amazingly smooth pasta, and noodles as well (garlic oil is my fave) Running the machine through an additional extrusion cycle, if there's still dough in the machine, will help ensure all the dough is used.
thank you for the creative ideas
I have mine for about 4 years , it used to work really good, but last 2 times I tried to make a pasta and I always measure exactly as it’s in the book, and for some reason when it’s ready to extrude , it’s stops and in the screen EEEE code. When I will open everything the pasta gets hard before it would come out. 🤷🏻♀️
Please any suggestions 🙏🏼
Adding a teaspoon of oil is a great idea. Thanks for sharing.
The most important part: how easily does it clean up? How does one get the dough out of the extruder heads?
Ya! Ditto same thought??? Cleaning the darn thing is important 🤔
Wife and I have one. Clean up is not too bad. Basically scrape the left over dough off, run the pieces under the sink, and into the dishwasher. If its too terribly inside any of the extrusion heads, they go into the freezer and then the left over dough can be broken off easily. Several of the different extrusion heads also have plastic moldings that have matching pins that push the dough out of the holes backwards. Maybe a 5 minute clean up, usually while the pasta is cooking. We don't regret the purchase at all.
@@Oversoul225 Thank you for your info . Very helpful!!!
It’s easier cleanup than making fresh dough by hand by a long shot. I just let the pasta bits dry and then they become easy to wash out. The dough scraper thingie also has metal prongs on the end you use to pick out any stubborn dough from the discs. By contrast, I end up with flour all over my kitchen when I mix, knead and roll sheets of pasta by hand.
This isn’t perfect; it’s annoying to make large batches (at least my version only allows for 2 cups of flour at a time), and the first pasta pieces that are extruded are usually pretty manky. I throw them out. But overall, it’s fun to use, easy to clean, less messy and involved than making by hand, and the fresh pasta cooks in a minute or two. I’d recommend only it if you are a small family and really prefer fresh pasta. I’m happy with it.
@@pinkmonkeybird2644
Throw them out?
Why don't you stick them back in the machine?
Hey great video. I just bought one for Christmas - it's still basically the same unit. The best part was a comment about a different pasta dough recipe wouldn't work with this unit. I was making it too wet and it was a disaster. That and I watched a bunch of other videos and you were the only one who experienced the same thing I did which is that some of the damned dough is just going to bounce around and not get pushed through so you need to have a littel human intervention. Thanks for this helpful video.
I only clicked because Auntie Esther was on the screen.
My ancient Simac finally broke down for good after 25 years of really heavy use. What a great machine! But, after all the broken parts and tape to hold it together, it just can't make it anymore. The motor finally gave up, and it leaks, and falls apart, and I can't use it for anything. This video is perfect timing! I have to replace my machine, and I'm going to go with the Philips. Thank you so much for the review!
Tony M I have one. It’s a great machine. She didn’t use it properly in the video. If you follow the instructions it does make a good pasta and I find it easy to use compared to older machines.
"I'm gonna live a long life...!" 🤣 Love that!! Great video, I think I'm sold!
There are so many different kinds of pasta, ingredients, methods, etc. It is best to take a fun day and just experiment and document the results. I would like to see more "Asian" pasta, i.e., rice noodles and pho noodles. Learning specific ingredients to accomplish those types would be very useful to all.
I loved this ad, especially the super loud music.
And the super pumped almost high on meth presenter!!!
I couldn’t get over how short she is.
Well she is a beautiful woman though. This was the first video I saw of her and I didn't know about her career. This girl got balls, really big ones, and she look damn good.
the intense stares to nowhere are kind of distracting though

I've wanted one of these forever. One of my friends has one and uses farm fresh eggs which makes the noodles taste even better

I have a much older pasta machine that I just swapped out for the Phillips. With my older one, you HAD to open it up and help the dough along so I'm used to doing that. I'm going to try it for the first time today. :)
Out of curiosity, is it possible to use the Phillips pasta maker to make homemade shaped breakfast cereal?
Thank you Esther for sharing. I plan to buy this machine but I’m not sure if I can add very hot boiling water inside when mixing flour inside ? My style of noodle need a very hot water mixing and machine spinning faster, could I adjust spinning speed of machine? Thanks
have you tried this for dumplings and wontons?
Can we make the Keto pasta using Philips Viva/Avance Pasta Maker? Could anyone share your experience using a pasta machine making keto pasta? Thanks!
Thinking of buying this. I wonder if the horrible one that come out early can be recycle back into the mixer. Can we open the door when the machine is running?
Y'all, you should disclose that they paid you upfront.
Aren't they legally suppose to disclose that it's an ad in the title/the drop down section?
@@emiliamosher9619 probably not? Depends on the country. I think the US is more lax.
I assumed this was unbiased since they do a whole bunch of these and often put the products down
how do you know this was a paid sponsorship?
@@derrickng4017 In the drop down box there's a link to the product and in brackets it says "(We may earn a commission if you purchase.)". So they're being paid to encourage people to buy this product. Even if they have the liberty in their contract with them to say if they actually like it or not (or in this case, a mixed review), by law in the US (The FTC) they need to disclose their sponsorship clearer so content users can clearly see they're being paid by it. Most RUclipsrs use hashtags and mention that the company gave them the items to try out, even if they are "allowed" to bash the products. The fact that it wasn't exactly clear to you kind of shows that they should be more transparent about this.
Found some guidelines in the FTC's website stating this specifically about RUclips videos. (You have to scroll a bit, unfortunately the questions aren't numbered so you just have to search for it.)
www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/business-center/guidance/ftcs-endorsement-guides-what-people-are-asking#disclose
The reason that the extrusions are better Katerina on in the batch is because the die heats up from the friction of the dough. Try placing the die in water and slowly heating the water.
Also, home extruder which use brass dies are much better. If you are willing to make the investment, try the Bottene Lillo Due high-end home extruder. It is worth the investment. It comes with four bronze dies, but you can buy additional bronze dies for various shapes.
Holy cow! You were not kidding about the cost! $145/die! I am sure they are wonderful- but wow...
I have this machine, it rocks, love it! My suggestion would be to use a mixture of bread flour and semolina and an egg rather than just the water for traditional homeade pasta you would get in a nice restaurant
What ratio do you suggest?
@@derp8575 I would say 2/3 regular flour and 1/3 semolina.
I suggest making balling up the leftover pasta in the machine and rolling it with a dough roller. That way you will get lasagna sheets, layer in between parchment paper , freeze and when you have enough make lasagna. The way you dont waste anything.
I found making the dough in my kitchenaid works much better. I use this to extrude only. Its important to get the mix right if your using semolina. Piss poor design.....the auger should be recessed in a channel on the bottom. The way its raised means you have unextruded dough left over in the machine. But that being said......it works great.
"really not bad" - Esther Choi
Almost every episode.
Thanatos she’s so smart and intelligent
This was super helpful, thank you!
I usually yell till my throat bleeds, then my machine starts to make the pasta perfectly.
You'd think they'd put an automatic cutter on the thing instead of doing it manually.
It would need to be adjustable for different lengths. Which means Morey money. It's probably another 50 bucks or more to make an automatic cutter that didn't just suck ass.
It's already a $250 machine......
Would you even pay the $250 if it had a cutter? Betting not.
Even many of the smaller scale industrial grade pasta makers do not have that option. It is most likely very expensive to add to a machine. Honestly it makes sense not to have that feature. People prefer their pasta different lengths sometimes.
It only makes sense for massive pasta extruders due to the quantity of pasta being made. Since this is such a quick process it would not make sense.
An automatic cutter is really just an arm driven by a small motor and with an adjustable timer, nothing fancy really
@@TheLoreNerd
The cutter is easy, and cheap.
Making it easy to remove, take apart, clean, reassemble, AND adjust for different lengths is the hard, and expensive part.
Robert Pruitt It’s literally not a problem, you adjust the length of the pasta with a timer, it cuts every so often, it’s just a metal arm that sweeps past
I let the machine kneads an additional 2-3 minutes. The result is firmer / al dente noodle after 3 minutes boiling. Also, I use egg+water instead of just water
I do too, but my lasagne sheets dry very quickly and split when trying to make ravioli, do you have any tips? 😊
does it include the 30 minute dough rest period?
Will it taste good if I use all purpose flour instead of bread flour?
Actually better to use All Purpose rather than Bread. Also trying looking for 00 flour the best for pasta.
I love ❤️ this woman’s opinions
Will this work with tapioca flour?
I have this exact machine. It's a life changer!!!! ;)
Ohhhhhh, I could totally see myself using this!
Can you boil pasta immediately after they come out of the pasta maker or do you need to let them dry first?
I boil mine directly out of the machine. No drying needed, unless you want to store your pasta for some reason.
Can it handle using a variety of different grains and flours? Does it work well with gluten free flour without getting stuck or blocked? How about buckwheat or amaranth or other flours? Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance.
How is clean up though? Dishwasher safe items?
