  • I dedicate this video to Mr. Alan Trivette whose photos used in this video are from the extraordinary collection of Alan Trivette's "Tribute to Taylor". www.taylortribu... . In 1960 Cleopatra was to be filmed at Pinewood Studios in England. 10min of footage filmed, many costume tests, and 3 million dollars later. The filmed footage was scrapped, due to a bad desicion of studio cheif, to film there weather conditions are not like Egypt. Hello!!! This video does not mean to infringe on any copyright laws. pforgan, thank you for making this beautiful video! So many wonderful photos, so many costumes never seen in the film, so many scenes to restore! Thanks also to Alan Trivette for his amazing website with incredible photos along, with a section devoted to the integrity of the *original* script to keep the idea of restoration alive. The music is wonderful to hear along with these stunning photos. I, personally, can never get enough of this movie. It's my absolute favorite film of all time.

wonderful!! a lot of these costumes i have never seen.
the costume designer for the english production here was oliver messel.
when the production was moved to italy, after taylor's illness, hollywood designer irene sharaff was brought in and re-designed all of taylor's costumes.
what you can see here is--
    a) messel had most of the costumes finished, there are so many here.
b)sharaff re-used a lot of the headresses that messel had designed.
i have never understood why messel was replaced.

These Pinewood costumes, although very beautiful, have fabrics that were obviously from India. The origin of the fabrics of the costumes used at Cine Citta are less identifiable or, at least, not identifiable as originating in India or China, etc. Thank you for this banquet which I used to enjoy in the web site Mr. Trivette dedicated to the film, Cleopatra. Last I heard from him in his web site was several years ago in which he siad he was redecorating his home inspired in the Ptolemaic palace in Alexandria.

Also the budget at the time in Pinewood was far less & it looks like they were going for a Vivian Leigh look in a much earlier production of Cleopatra & Cesar ??

Check the Cleopatra coins for style. She had her hair in a Greek "bun" with two strips of white wool bound in her hair. Where are all of these failed costumes? The Khepresh was a blue war helmet ONLY.

These costumes compared to the ones they used are terrible!! I am so glad they went with the ones they did! The costumes look like something a dancing girl would wear and the headpieces, yikes. Sorry Mr. Trivette, pretty bad, I bed Liz thought so too after she saw the ones she did use.

I disagree! Messel's costume design looks queenly and majestic. Also, he was able to diversify every look. You can find greek inspirations in there while sharaff's work looks like they only had two basic designs. No wonder she copied or rehashed some of Messel's wigs and dresses. Her work looked lazy. Gee, that was four hours of same basic, boring, bland dresses! Go watch the movie again and see for yourself!
