As their mother explained, every person has a little bit of light inside them, but they always want more, and if they try to take it, the light will go out. The absent of light is darkness. And that's what happened to MIB. Some of his light was basically returned to the source, and without it, he has darkness within him from the lack of light. The light itself is basically the exotic matter responsible for the essence of existence. More or less light determines your nature in the universe. The more light you have, the more powerful you are to alter reality around you to your wishes (which is why Jacob can do some supernatural things). The base level of the universe is a lack of light altogether, which isn't actually nothing, but rather, some twisted version of reality that is lifeless and full of black smoke that isn't technically sentient, but just a force of its own, and the whole base level of existence without the light is just an entire universe filled with black smoke. Since their mother made them unable to harm each other, technically Jacob could not kill MIB, but since Jacob knocked him unconscious (which would have otherwise killed him) and MIB ended up getting sucked into the light, MIB could not die, but also lost some of that light, altering his nature. The light itself could be said to be something that modulates universal constants and provides what the universe itself needs to exist at all. It must be something that effectively permeates the entire universe all at once, instantly, faster than light, radiating out to create the entire universe. Since it is constantly radiating its energy, if it goes out, the universe also goes out like a light switch, since the light is the only thing keeping back the darkness. But like shadows in a lit room, the MIB is able to exist parallel to the light that radiates and otherwise pushes back the darkness, like some multi dimensional aspect. The light itself cannot be taken, but trying to take it can put the light out. Basically their proximity to the light allows them to get extra amounts of it, or the mother found a way to imbue more light into Jacob and MIB. Perhaps previously it could be taken, but since men will keep taking it, they'd eventually exhaust it, causing the collapse of the universe. So even though the mother is dead, her wishes clearly still have power, which is why Jacob could not kill MIB. She just never foresaw how that will would affect things in that scenario where he was thrown into the light but couldn't die. In essence, anyone going into the light becomes a smoke monster, or dies instantly but degrades the light, but since Jacob could not harm MIB, the light could not allow MIB to die. So Jacob can for example, give someone a cup of water, "bless" it with his wish, (like with immortality for Richard), and have them drink it. The same goes with the healing pools in the temple. What is also hinted is that since the light has been degraded by men trying to take it before, our base reality may have been even greater than we know it, where the reality like how Jacob experiences it, might have been the base reality for everyone, where no one dies, where people can will thing into existence, and a civilization was built on it. We may only ever die because the light itself was degraded severely in some previous event before their mother became its protector. That's just one way to look at it. But the actual reality of the light, when you take Jacobs wine bottle analogy into consideration, is the base universe is what it is, but the lights placement is like covering a black hole. It's a cork over a bottle, where the opening to that bottle is where the darkness actually resides, like some other universe connected to ours that is being held back, but would consume our universe if it was able to get through, and the light is the doorway blocking that darkness. MIB essentially passed through that barrier and brought back some of the darkness with him. So if you imagine the big bang, where everything was darkness, and then some particle magically appears into existence from what we call the big bang, causing the universe to form. Which essentially makes the light the exact center of the universe, where the big bang happened. But even though it added something, nothing was also still there, waiting on the other side. It's like a ying yang wormhole, where big bang happened on one side, but the "darkness" was all condensed to the other side, folded in on itself, and trapped by the light, like wine in a corked bottle. They are inexorably linked, but messing with it can eventually cause the balance to be thrown off, where rather than having light as the primary thing, darkness becomes the primary thing. So basically the whole thing is about the true nature of our universe, simplified down to two elements: light and dark, existence and non existence. Some ancient society discovered these truths a long long time ago, much longer ago than we probably realize, to the point that even in MIB's mother's time, it was already well known what the light was, and who knows how long she was actually protecting the light. She could have been there for millions of years, or just one of the many people the role was passed down to, meaning whole modern civilizations could have risen and fallen many times over. She explains everything in a simplistic manner, but she does so like she is actually very scientifically aware, like she came from a civilization just as advanced, or possible even more advanced than today. But keeping the explanations simple allows them to be easily passed down and understood, regardless of the era of development humans are at, whether they're from an advanced civilization that has risen, or from one that has fallen later. So it hints that she is very much from a very advanced civilization and has seen the rise and fall of mankind's civilizations over and over again.
@Rude666 I'm aware of that...and admittedly, I'm bad at guessing people's ages, but from my perception, the character of Jacob looks like he's only in his mid-thirties.
I always wondered why Jacob couldn't just simply let MiB leave the island? Was it because he's the Smoke Monster and would thus be a risk to the world? If so then why couldn't he just find a way to get rid of all his smoke powers (Jack did it) and then let him leave? Seriously for a enlightened mystic that everyone worships, he seems pretty arrogant here.
@eternalgarnet I wouldn't call them best friends, more like brothers. Jacob is like the older brother, fond of the younger but aware of his childish hot-headness, while MiB is the youngest, always wanting to replace the older brother. In fact, considering the story about MiB's mother, I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be not a metaphor, but actually true.
@eternalgarnet Still, MiB does the same thing that he said Caesar did: he calls people he doesn't like 'friends'. He even did it with Seamus a few episodes back. And "old friend", as Jacob put it, can mean a lot of things
I watched the whole thing when it was on, and I'm still a bit fuzzy on it: why was MiB such a threat to leave? Jacob was caretaker of the island, and he'd killed/made his brother into the smoke monster. But his brother wasn't evil, he just wasn't fanatical the same way they were raised. He still was reverent and mystified by the island, til their mom killed his crew. And now he just wants to leave - why would that be bad?
He is bound to the Island. Jacob isn't really preventing him from leaving. It's impossible for him to leave as long as the Source in the Island exists. The only way for him to leave is to "turn off" the light. Unfortunately, a piece of that light exists in every person, and extends to places all over the planet. So him leaving isn't really a big deal, but the process in which allows him to leave would essentially destroy the planet and everyone on it.
Was that the SAME bottle that Mother used to make Jacob the Island's protector. Was it then a message to Smokey as MiB? That I know what YOU really ARE and you're never getting off this Island.
That's why he can't - MiB was a ghost that born in antimatter or dark energy (that DHARMA tried to find) - his body died (caves;"Adam and Eve") - he was Black Smoke always after Jacob threw him into the Heart - but makes his own look
I don't think smokey was ever really Jacob's brother. The cave isn't just the source, it's also a prison (for smokey). Smokey can't get out, unless someone else takes his place. Smokey is just mimicking MIB to f with Jacob.
No. The smoke monster is just disembodied consciousness of one who tries to enter the Source directly. Mother was also a smoke monster. Check out Lost Explained for more details.
I thought it was hysterical how these twins, one, don't look anything alike (even most fraternal twins bear some resemblance to one another) and two, look about twenty years apart in age.
I find no reason why Jacob did not let Mib leave the island.. all that Mib ever did, including all the killings, was in order to leave the island, you would probably have done the same in his shoes.. if someone has a good explanation as to why Mib was evil, pls post it.. and pls don't bs me about the wine in the bottle
Yeah, a very gray area. But I would say the man in black is not jacobs human brother. As you know he seems to be able to take people's thoughts and memories...so what is he?........evil trying to escape?. He can't conveniently fly away over But if Jacob let's him go. He would have to shut off that light to make him mortal. And if he shut off that light there is no more good. I refer to the ending when he but the lid back on the light came back. The same bright light that poured out of the church doors. I can only assume there would no longer be any light at the end of the tunnel if he is released.
@@easterbeast843 I know Mib is not Jacobs brother.. the writters dont give us any explanation about the light and the darkness, its the same thing as with the wine in the bottle.. and you are wrong, MIB could leave the island , could fly over with the Ajira plane after Jacobs death, but "it has to be together" with all the candidates...or he could just leave after he would have killed all the candidates.. instead he took a shortcut after Jack was the the new protector..he chose not to wait any longer for a plot to kill Jack, but instead took a shortcut to destroy the island using Desmond and leave afterwords..and yes, you are right, he could have left if Jacob allowed him to leave somehow.. but I don't think that somehow involved Desmond cause Jacob could have let MIb leave way before Desmond got to the island.. I belive we should just trust Jacob that MIB was evil

Smokey the result of MiB's consciousness getting fused with the energy in the Source of the Island. The entity isn't entirely Jacob's brother's disembodied consciousness, but part of whatever energy makes the Island a place where Jacob can see the future, look at the lives of those FAR OFF in distant places, where time travel is possible, where paralysis gets reversed, where cancers get cured, where dead people can be seen and can communicate with the living etc. This entity now carrying Jacob's brother's disdain for humanity (they come, they fight, the corrupt, they destroy) and his pathological need to leave the Island. But this energy is bound to the Source and the Island. It can't leave. Jacob protects the Source and as result the Island. The entity wants to kill Jacob so it can destroy the Island and leave. Destroying the Island means ending all life. The Light at the Source is connected to the Light in every person (per "Mother's" description of the Light to young Jacob and MiB). If the light goes out here, it goes out everywhere. The entity having absorbed Jacob's brother's consciousness knows this, but doesn't care. It feels itself to be an individual wanting to "break free" of the prison that it perceives the Island as. And so, it ruthlessly and mercilessly kills anyone who comes to the Island, or manipulates people by impersonating the dead into killing each other. It kills without regard for innocence like it did the people in the temple, the pilot (Seth Rich), and Rousseau's team, and very likely the people on the Ajira flight (it told Richard they have to do something about those Ajira passengers). That alone is evil. Evil because it kills simply to achieve its ends. None of those people who came to Island had anything to do with its "captivity". And yet, it killed them or orchestrated their deaths. That's what makes it Evil. Also, the entity ONLY perceives itself as being "captive" but truly it was NEVER NOT part of the Light in the Source...it merely "thinks" it is a separate entity. That's why the Light is less bright after the events in Across the Sea. A portion of the Light now exists as Smokey who thinks he is Jacob's brother. We see it take on characteristics of others he impersonates (Christian, Yemi, Locke). It harbors a very negative view of humanity and has no compunction about killing people. That's Evil!

This is from Ab Aeterno, genius.
@Rude666 I'm aware of that...and admittedly, I'm bad at guessing people's ages, but from my perception, the character of Jacob looks like he's only in his mid-thirties.
Yes. A comment made on the MAIN scene in the episode : Across the Sea, was made BEFORE Across the Sea was aired.
Nice.
I remember watching this for the first time and thought MiB turned back into himself in present day. Lols
Ever wonder if the "smoke monster" was ever his brother?
That's exactly what I thought.
He was smoke monster.
If he was leave he was able to kill the all people in the world
Jacob didn't know how to do what Jack did. He even said in response to Jack asking if it's possible to kill him "I hope so"
Best scene in the whole show aside from the scene with Ben and Charles
@eternalgarnet I wouldn't call them best friends, more like brothers. Jacob is like the older brother, fond of the younger but aware of his childish hot-headness, while MiB is the youngest, always wanting to replace the older brother.
In fact, considering the story about MiB's mother, I wouldn't be surprised if this turned out to be not a metaphor, but actually true.
@TheDeidaraMaria Hard to explain but in an earlier scene Jacob described MiB as Evil,Darkness and Malevolence that'd spread if got out
Jacob talks to Richard ab aterno
Where's the money Lewbowski?!
and thats why jacob said no when mib asked him ''you expect an appologie becouse of me wanna kill you?'' becouse jacob kaind of axcidently killed mib
Such a waste of a good wine.
but he is arrogant. he is a human like everyone else.
Mocking him with the bottle. And he also left the island numerous times. Jacob really wasn't a good dude. Lol
2 Best characters on TV
0:44 - Jacobs brother here sounds like Nigel Farage.
What a view...
There is a guy from Sweden that looks JUST LIKE Jacob. He even acts like him IM am not jokeing people REALLY. O__O
Name?
good talk to evil is epic lol
zaandarbrow jacob isn't a good person, neither is mib pure evil
@eternalgarnet Still, MiB does the same thing that he said Caesar did: he calls people he doesn't like 'friends'. He even did it with Seamus a few episodes back. And "old friend", as Jacob put it, can mean a lot of things
Showing Satan crashing the glass firmament
@Guffchard You do realize that comment is older than "Across the Sea".
So it was all just a family feud? Jacob doesn't want his brothert to see the world and so his brother is deemed evil?
His brother is literally a Smoke Monster who hated human beings, how'd you think that would go?
@@kyle1137 His brother was consumed by the smoke monster
@@WonkelDee his brother become the smoke monster
@@SigalDa I don’t think so. The smoke monster took the form of his brother but i don’t think it was actually him.
@@WonkelDeeno. The smoke monster isn't an entity in itself. You become it when you try to enter the Source.
so why Jacob doesn't want MiB to leave the island
Er, that's a two-year-old comment made before Across the Sea was aired.
Urza and Mishra
why won't he let him leave?
This was the final good Lost moment bar the last thirty second of the entire series.
ur wrong :P
@@eddyesdras Agreed. The interactions between Jocob and MIB were obvious. The last scene had far more emotional impact.
0:44 - jacobs brother sounds here lke Nigel Farage.
That's why he can't - MiB was a ghost that born in antimatter or dark energy (that DHARMA tried to find) - his body died (caves;"Adam and Eve") - he was Black Smoke always after Jacob threw him into the Heart - but makes his own look
yummy wine
what would've been so bad if he left?
MIB is the source of all evil, so if he had left the would have turned to a chaos..!
poetico
I don't think smokey was ever really Jacob's brother. The cave isn't just the source, it's also a prison (for smokey). Smokey can't get out, unless someone else takes his place. Smokey is just mimicking MIB to f with Jacob.
No. The smoke monster is just disembodied consciousness of one who tries to enter the Source directly. Mother was also a smoke monster. Check out Lost Explained for more details.
I really don't blame him for wanting to leave. If Jacob had let him leave he might not have tried to kill him.
He was a smoke monster, can't let him leave
@silkcorset they are only 4 years in age difference in real life.
@xoxojollyy rofl but dude his 100 % like jacob. he even offerd me a subway durring our lunch break. twin? xD
He can't conveniently fly away over
But if Jacob let's him go.
@@catac83 mib couldn't leave the island. That's pretty much why he did what he did.
He didn't fly anywhere.
They did stick him in LA but that was a writing issue..
Oh...and mib can't kill candidates.
@@catac83 actually mib needed everyone together so he could have them all together to die . He needed them to die so jacab can't be replaced
But he could not directly kill them himself.
That's Evil!
what a view '
Suuuuure.
Nonetheless - you're wrong.
