Basically, Tai Chi Chuan IS Shaolin Kung Fu. Let me explain : Chenjia Gou, the village where chen Tai Chi Chuan is originated is a place near to Shaolin Temple, something like 50 kilometers only. It is recorded that Chen Wangting, the creator of Chen school of Tai Chi Chuan built his art after the book of general Qi Jiguang ( Jixiao Xinshu ). This manual presents 32 techniques from 16 different boxes from the late Ming dynasty. 29 of the 32 techniques also are referenced in the old Tai Chi Chuan. One Tao Lu ( chinese term for Kata ) has the same exact name than a lu from Tai Chi Chuan. This lu is Paochui ( canon fist ). Back in ancient times, it was almost impossible to have access to the archives of other martial arts schools. Sharing some name of techniques means that certainly, Chen Wangting shared some training with fellow Kung Fu masters. From a technical point of view, Tai Chi Chuan is very close both in its techniques and tactics to classical old Shaolin Kung Fu. People tend to confuse the training process of Tai Chi Chuan with its soft, slow mouvements, pushing hands with the real fighting art which is very brutal and powerful. Few people, even Tai Chi teachers knows nowdays how to really use Tai Chi Chuan as a fighting art, just like some Kung Fu turned into gymnastic like sport with no relation with self defense. If you really want to discover Tai Chi Chuan as a fighting art, you must read Dr Yang Jwing Ming's books. They'll certainly change the way you consider that art.

@@slayerking805 Thank you. You're certainly really lucky to have such a Master to learn with. Studying the theory is important in order to understand the strengh and the weakness of a fighting art. Kung Fu isn't only moving right and left, giving punchs and kicks, as you know, it deals with Internal Power generation as well as external one and, even if Kung Fu is a war, self defense system, its purpose is not limited to win a fight. I think that the philosophical part of Kung Fu creates better human beeings. I wish you the best for your training. My respect to your Sifu.

Having lived in China for several years, their philosophy is, well, different. Old Tai Chi practitioners in their parks, just nonchalantly touch the floor with their elbows between their feet while standing. I've "played" push hands and their level of understanding of body mechanics is phenomenal. GM William C.C. Chen is a modern tai chi fighter who likes to mix it up; a rare thing. He broke a martial arts masters thigh with a low punch. One would need to live in China to learn from the real teachers. See Pan Qingfu. Northern Shaolin and Tai Chi were both taught in the Northern Shaolin Temples. In fact the man that brought Tai Chi to Shaolin his name was Wang. He stopped at a village on the way to another temple and some of the villagers saw the forms he was doing. He taught them the Wang style and then went on his way. The village put the kung fu they knew and added it to the Tai Chi Form and so was born the Chen style. I was fortunate enough to learn the little known Wang style of Tai Chi as taught by my great GrandMaster Wong Jack Man.

I have studied both traditional Shaolin Kung Fu and Yang Style combat Tai Chi Chuan for years under a master of both those martial arts. First of all, the name, "Tai Chi Chuan" is somewhat difficult to translate. It literally means, "Grand Ultimate Fist". However, the 'grand ultimate' part is not referring to the superiority of the martial art, but rather the 'grand ultimate design of the universe' as typically symbolized in the Yin-Yang circle you so often see associated with martial arts. Therefore, a better, although less literal, translation of Tai Chi Chuan might be, "The Art of Fighting in Accordance With the Highest Universal Principles". As far as comparing Shaolin Kung Fu to Tai Chi Chuan, the key difference is that one (Shaolin) is a Buddhist martial art, while the other (Tai Chi) is a Taoist martial art, and is part of the Wu Dang tradition of those arts. Both rely on the development and manipulation of chi, or internal energy. Neither one is 'soft' nor 'hard', as those concepts do not really even apply to these martial arts. Both can be used as forms of moving meditation, or as lethal combat strategies. With regard to which is the 'superior' fighting art in pure terms of lethality, that is actually hard to say. I know there have been many videos showing Tai Chi practitioners getting their rears kicked by MMA fighters, etc. However, it is obvious to me that the so-called "Tai Chi masters" in these embarrassing displays did not rigorously train in the true combat applications of Tai Chi. That sort of training demands that you not only develop a very powerful and flexible body, but also are constantly testing and refining your skills against highly-trained opponents.

My dad studied Chen Man Ching style Tai Chi under Ben Lo in SF for many years and also studied some Aikido as well. He also did A LOT of push hands. He never studied it as a combat form but purely for defensive purposes and it was amazing how impossible it was to hit him. He really is like water and anyone who would try just went flying past him. It’s a very interesting martial art.
I find it fascinating that the Taiwanese masters teach Tai Chi as the very last form; they train all other types of hard Kung Fu before finally teaching Tai Chi. It always struck me as taking the most basic forms of martial arts and slowing them down to develop great control and muscle memory (although that’s an oversimplification). Fascinating stuff.
I tried to get my dad to teach me when I was young, but he had it in his head that trying to teach a family member would cause problems because his teacher, Ben Lo had an ego issue when his wife started learning other martial arts in addition to Tai Chi (it never made sense to me considering my dad didn’t have that kind of an ego trip; but parents get weird ideas sometimes 🤷🏻‍♂️).
I have noticed that the Chinese TV Kung Fu shows often have show downs between the Buddhist Shaolin Kung Fu guy and the Taoist Wu Dang Tai Chi guy and now it makes sense. Great explication. Thanks.
P.S., I agree about the MMA fighter thing. The Tai Chi “masters” who seemed to get involved in something like that (and got their a$$es kicked) seemed to be on an ego trip and thought far more of themselves than the skills they really had. I would bet the true “masters” with such combat skills are people we will never, ever know about because they wouldn’t care to get involved in a public bout like that.

" I know there have been many videos showing Tai Chi practitioners getting their rears kicked by MMA fighters". That's because the Tai Chi and Shaolin Kung Fu aren't effective today. The fighters in the mma aren't behind centuries old "arts" of fighting. They use the today's most effective moves and techniques from various styles like wrestling, Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Also, the "chi" isn't a real thing. It's a fantasy. There might be faith in it, but it's just not real. These "arts" no doubt are physcially demanding, but so is gymnastics and figure skating, which is more comparable to Tai Chi and Shaolin Kung Fu then todays effective fighting. I used to believe these "arts" were superior to the fighters in the mma long ago, but have come back to reality. Put any one of these "masters", if they aren't already 60+ years old, in a mma fight with a decent fighter and their whole "art" breaks down immediatly. These arts are great for the movies.

Tai Chi Chan, according to my old master, Marshal Ho of Los Angeles, translated to "supreme ultimate fist". He had a statement we often heard that was similar to the "movement" comment in this video:
When you stand, stand like the
    mountain;
When you move, move like the
    river.
I once read that in about 1947 or '48, just before the Communists took over China, a call went out to all martial arts practitioners in China for a test of combat to see which martial art was the best. These challenges were common on individual levels with one of the combatants possibly being seriously injured or even killed. This much broader challenge stated it would proceed until only one stood. His would be the supreme art. The combat lasted three days, and the last man standing was a master of Tai Chi Chuan. Or so the account said.
Now, realize the difference. You can learn enough of the basics of Kung Fu, or Karate, in a few weeks or months to attack or defend against another person if they are not too skilled. However, it typically takes 3-1/2 (3.5) _years_ to be able to use Tai Chi Chuan effectively as a martial art. You can learn strikes, blocks, etc, along the way, but to use it as a flowing system, and against mutiple attackers simultaneously, as it was intended, takes time. You will also learn the forms, a sequence of movements, one flowing into the next, and practiced very slowly. Two of us young (early 20s) Tai Chi Chuan students were walking through a hostel where many students lived, and a Kung Fu student friend jumped out in front of us with a yell as we entered the large kitchen. We two both snapped into combat postures before we even realized we had moved. Our Kung Fu friend jumped about six feet backward, obviously shocked, and said, "So much for Tai Chi being some passive ['waste of time' was the inference]". We were as surprised as he was, and it came from those slow motion forms practice sessions building muscle memory. We acted from reflex.
During those years you may discover why Tai Chi is referred to as "moving meditation", and you may feel and even learn to direct the "breath energy" or "intrinsic energy" known as chi. If you start on this course, please be sure to find a good teacher. This is an "internal martial art", and philosophy and building internal energy (chi) is as critical as learning the forms. Later learning the meditative aspect of those forms is as critical as learning their martial applications. To start learning combat form lies in a two-person exercise called "push hands". This teaches the transfer of energy between two combatants as the yin (yielding, absorbing of energy) and yang (forceful, aggressive ejection of energy) of movement and interaction. Oh, and don't neglect your exercises, as strength and flexibility are critical to doing the forms corectly and SLOWLY. That slow motion practice requires far more muscle control than you would initially imagine. There were 53 students in my beginning class at the academy, and during forms practice Master Ho would clap his hands one time... and we all froze in whatever posture we were in at that moment. He would walk among us correcting minor hand, arm, foot or leg positions, saying something like "The pain you feel is instructive, and it is burning this posture into your muscle memory." I learned then and there just how hard it can be to simply hold your arms in front of you (a position called "play the fiddle" and similar to the Wing Chun posture popularized by recent movies about Ip Mann). This position had the hands open, thumbs upward, and he would lay a stick he carried across them. It should be horizontal to the ground while it lay between the web of one's thumb and the crook of the elbow of the other arm. By the time he had examined each of us and made slight corrections, we were shaking and sweating with exertion, given our weight was distributed 60%--40% between each of our legs. This usually happened at least once or twice every day during forms practice. Or so it seems in my memory of that long ago time at about a mile altitude and surrounded by majestic mountains near Aspen, Colorado.
One last thing my old master pointed out. American (and Western in general) athletes and sports practitioners build bulk muscles and strength over a relatively short period of time through heavy exercises, weight training, etc. This strength diminishes just as rapidly. Tai Chi Chuan develops internal strength over a longer period of time. This lasts much longer and even into old age. Marshal was 67 years old when I knew him in the early 1970s, and he looked about 40. He was stocky, but he moved effortlessly, and he had small numbers of gray hairs scattered through his black hair. He also hit on just about every unattached female in range, though never aggressively or overbearingly, and he had a one or two year old child with one of his long time students. He was, as we said back then, a spry old dog. His lunch hours were spent in the Aikedo dome that had a mat, sparring (rondory [sp?] as it is called) with other Judo practitioners. It was his hobby. Limber, muscular, and spry indeed for 67.

Our school always ranked way up on the lists for all the belt classes but more than that those tournaments were great places to meet others in the sport and get to know other styles . I'd say our style was at least as good as any other and a lot better than some but I won't name any styles as any style will get you healthier than you would be without it and they can be a lot of fun no matter the style . I would also say it is just as much 'the practice'! At the Kung Fu school where I was originally trained, we not only sparred regularly, but sparred against our instructors, and often multiple opponents all at the same time! I believe regular, hard, full-on fighting against equal, or better, opponents is the only real way for people to develop into truly skilled martial artists. This is so important, in fact, that I would pit practically ANYONE from ANY style against any so-called "superior" style--just as long as they had been training properly in the way I described. The bottom line is that ANY martial art is simply a set of tools. The person who "gets the job done" is the one who has the knowledge, the skill, and the disciplined training to be able to utilize those tools to their maximum potential.

So if I see a fight coming, I would always have my hands up in front of me(to block) with open palms(not fists), as if I want to deescalate the situation. Then if the guy swings or throws a punch, I would step back quickly at a 45 degree angle in either direction, but never straight backward! Once I cleared or blocked his punch, then I can quickly strike back with a side kick or a punch or two, and hopefully win the fight.

I don't like to hit anybody unless they try to hit me first so the thing to do is to have your awareness of space and distance and the level of insanity of your attacker. It can be like a movie that you can control the speed. If you don't act afraid or react in a way that would draw the attack it might go away all by itself. If not then you are prepared to move to counter and Parry and return. Your ability to remain calm and focused is what will really make the difference.

I studied xiaolin in New York. There are over a thousand types and styles of kung fu. Even Tai chi has wuo , how yang sun and Chen. Can you have the Israeli new krav maga in the Filipino escrima. Thai Muay Thai and so on and so forth. Truly I have found that by studying all of them and practicing that certain aspects of each one become part of my repertoire if they be inclined to suit me but if not they are discarded. Nonetheless eagle claw kung fu and hung ga kung fu with Chen Chen style Tai chi makes a great balance.
Always be like the nature of wind and water and learn to adapt. So many are stiff and rigid and fall easily because of it.

It is. And a good teacher will tell you to make the things that you are naturally better at your fight game. No one really "wins" a street fight... but that's how you not lose. It is wise to expose yourself to as many styles as you can so you understand what to do against them. But do what you're great at in a real situation. Find out what that is and practice the heck out of it. "Don't fear the man that practiced 10,000 kicks. Fear the man that practiced one kick 10,000 times"

You can throw people to the ground and be fine, but you get wrecked if you get put there. I wouldnt grapple in a street fight because it's not like wrestling or judo/jiujitsu practice. There isn't a thick mat. Some of the slams are still ok, but dont go trying to advance positions and ground and pound on concrete.

I've never seen a coconut in person so I can't really say. I think people usually crack them with a hatchet? You must be a very large person if you have the strength? I can't say that it's impossible but it doesn't seem likely. I broke a cantalope with nunchucks but it took like 10 tries to hit it right.

Eric Clapton: 'It's in the way that you use it' that makes the real difference. Both martial arts are equally good. I can only imagine an MMA fighters having these skills.
The truth about all martial arts is how they are used in different situations. The perfect martial artiste shpuld be the one who have mastered and blended all type of martial arts available and find the way to optimize their uses in every different situations. There are times whereby hand grappling is crucial, wrestling, boxing, kicking, elbowing, kneeing or just body smashing are necessary (in real battle between life and death). The more you know the better. But in sports there are regulations for safety reasons. To say that Taichi is better and stronger is just like telling that the Moon is small, just because we have never been there. There is a reason why Kungfu or any other ancient martial arts still exist today. Of they aren't good enough they would have been neglected long ago. Just ask some elite Chinese persinal bodyguards you can befriend, mostvof them mustvhave mastered Kungfu real well and live up to the expectations of the art itself. If it don't work they wouldn't have been hired. I personally have the privillege of knowing some of these deadly experts in Kungfu, Karate, Muay Thai and TangSooDo whom most certainly have their own killings. But of course these type of people you couldn't see gracing the MMA ring. The sole purpose of their skills are to protect, defend and kill the attackers. I maintain that no single martial arts could claim supremacy above others. The wisest martial artiste who could deliver a killing blow in one stroke will be the winner, and that can be from any style of martial arts available. Ever heard of the fighting technique, the art of fighting without fighting? That could be the supreme art.

OK this made me subscribe! Mui Thia also teaches you to breath, run and be able to fight off multiple attackers. And still have enough energy to hit with plenty of power. That's the whole point. If you don't have any enemies there is no one left to fight you. I choose the style of Bruce Lee, but he was extremely intelligent and probably studied all of them. So I will not put down Thia Chi since I am a pacifist and probably the greatest fighter ever after retirement of 26 years. 😉. KO's? Defeats 0, wins? Is my record that I will try to keep not by fighting. A word to the wise is sufficient

  • @edwardhanson3664

'Qi' is 'energy'. 'Gong' is 'practice'.. Tai Chi is a series of chi gong moves strung together into a form that can be practiced and memorized. Kung fu is for people who need an intense external practice. Tai chi is for everyone else and is an internal practice..

    • @lonnierh0dgejr41
      @lonnierh0dgejr41 2 года назад

Qi (Ki in japanese) is breath. the schools that refer to it as "energy" use it as a way to get more people to join the school to learn "kung fu magic" and is a way to fill their pockets using superstitious nonsense on gullible people.
this is evidenced by the fact that any serious combat martial arts style teaches proper breathing techniques. kung fu has been shown on numerous occasions to not be a reliable combat form of martial arts. tai chi IS a great exercise style. of course any thing that includes movement is going to have health benefits, since movement improves strength, endurance and flexibility.

Lonnie, it appears you haven't fought against a skilled Kung Fu practitioner. 🤔 nor have you met one. Proper breathing techniques are all taught in both Kung Fu and Tai Chi. The breath merely operates like a compressor to fuel the body with oxygen as the body moves whilst the mind drives the power. The body, although well trained in how to produce power, is merely a tool of the mind, and the breath is the fuel to keep it operating.

    • @lonnierh0dgejr41

@@slayerking805 i took a few classes in lost trail kung fu (mi zhung lo han kung fu. possibly misspelled) and sparred against 3 of their practitioners during that time. before that, i practiced TKD, shotokan karate and took a few classes in Kali. sparring was not normal for them as we met and talked about our experiences with martial arts. i suggested some light contact sparring and we went out in my front yard and sparred for a few minutes. i am 5 feet tall and the 3 i sparred against were at least 6 inches taller than i am, giving them a reach advantage over me. i wouldn't say i overwhelmed them but i did always get the better of each of them, as they weren't prepared to actually use what they learned against an opponent. it is possible that it was just that particular school that didn't use sparring as a way to test what they had learned.
put simply, no oxygen, no fight. learning proper breathing techniques allow you to prolong your ability to keep fighting. you can say it with a bunch more words but it's the same thing.
i miss the days of practicing martial arts as i am now old and disabled. i still get my nunchaku out once in a while and mess with them though.

    Hi,
Melvin here I've been a fan of martial arts since the days of Bruce Lee. Since there are so many variables to martial arts, in my opinion when it comes to martial arts Shaolin is one of the oldest and complete martial art styles of fighting. From fighting ground techniques to weapons just a complete arsenal of techniques. Then there's the mental and physical training that really sets them apart from most modern day martial artists. When it comes to comparing Shaolin and Tai Chi styles to which is better i would agree with what Bruce Lee said. A fighting style is only as good as to the talent, dedication, and devotion a person puts into learning the skills. Shaolin monks spend mostly all their lifes training from very young ages, which makes them have exceptional abilities far above modern day martial arts practioners.

If anyone is interested: Taijiquan doesn't mean "ultimate boxing". The meaning of Taiji is not so easy to grasp since there is no western concept. tai means big and ji means ultimate. But taiji is Yin&Yang - you probably know the symbol; most people call it YinYang-symbol, but properly this symbol is called Taiji. So taijiquan means boxing (well, better weaponless martial art) according to yin and yang, i.e. taiji.
I try to explain, because in the video it souds as if taijiquan would be saying it's the ultimate or best. This is not the case. It means "fighting according to the highest (philosophical) principle" (=the unity of yin and yang, Taiji)

Many thanks for the video Gentlemen,
    Just to review the ideas:
Interestingly, an originally fighting syle turns into a healing method
and a formerly self-defence system fro Shaolin monks is transmorming
into a fighting method. Undersootd till 5:08
Taichi: If one part of the body moves, the entire body moves.
For those interested in self-healing, Taichi is more recommended! 06:10
Shaolin is also able to serve the same purposes thastz Taichi offers, yet, when facing a street-fight scenario,
mopst probably, the Shaloin -based trining would have been more suitable for you!
    The question
pretty much answers itself! If in a fight, a Shaolin option is more viable. But if a Taichi-master, when in doubt, fight it out.!!
May be, it is about starting or eacting. Active in Shaolin, Reactive in Tai -Chi., is porbalbly the viable solution.
Best regards, Paul, 68 retired, instructor of Karate,
