I think physical model-making is actually really important to develop spatial skills. Only ever working in digital space does not produce the same three-dimensional understanding as real-world objects. I do agree there’s an issue with material costs (one model I was required to make in undergrad cost me $60 because it had to be made of stacked museum board…). But for the most part, my professors cared less about materials used and more about the accuracy and craft of the model. Creativity was rewarded moreso than fancy materials. And I was pretty savvy about scavenging materials from recycle bins and re-using materials I had used for previous models. My studio mates and I called this “cannibalizing” a model. I did grad school online, so the physical modeling disappeared as it is not really an effective medium for digital presentations. I actually miss physical modeling. And have noticed that some of my classmates who have only ever used CAD to design really don’t think about spatial organization or the feasibility of a form the same way as those of us who have worked with physical models. You can made anything “work” in CAD, but if you can’t figure out how to build it in real space, you don’t really know what you are designing.

for me its fun making models but i have problem how to put things together
If they wanted us to make things look pretty, they should place WAY more emphasis on our presentations. At least those are applicable
