The third and final installment of How Hamilton Makes You Cry discusses how melody works in Hamilton. If you haven't seen my previous videos, I highly recommend seeing them first to understand the epic scope of what the show Hamilton does artistically and how it does it.

Addendum (stuff that might add to your enjoyment of the video):
1. The phrase "Blow Us All Away" is also sung on MI RE DO, making Dear Theodosia even more a statement on domestic stability.
2. The transition between Stay Alive Reprise and It's Quiet Uptown is actually a Dear Theodosia reference. In it, you can hear the melody for "someday, someday."
3. The phrase "Satisfied" is also sung on MI RE DO but only in the relative major. However, since the song is in minor, the effect is that Angelica's domestic stability is unable to reach the root. Interesting, no?
The Aaron Burr Chord Progression is also in the Stay Alive Reprise with the C/Am/Em. There is a Deleted Song "Dear Theodosia Reprise" (Deleted due to time) where Burr laments his wife's death and renews his dedication to his Daughter that parallels Phillip's death scene that coincidentally ends in a sustained chord that could have led into "It's Quiet Uptown."
As I explain in the video, Stay Alive Reprise uses C Em Am. Yes, it's just two chords (Em and Am) switched around, but this is what makes Lin's intentions clear so that we associate this with Dear Theodosia, and not with Aaron Burr.
Great job!
Would like to see a video specific to the last song, Who Lives, who dies, who tells your story, Please!
Summary: Hamilton is a fucking musical thesis.
Alright i know I'm late to the party, but with the show releasing on D+ I powered through all your vids, totally awesome! I haven't seen you mention this; the majority Hamilton MI RE DOs are F# E D
FED
Fed.
as in 'Federalist,' the governance system Hamilton was a major architect and proponent of. Whether on purpose or happenstance, another mind blowing layer for me
Can we just take a moment and appreciate that Lin is a freaking genius?
Edit from a year later cuz people are mentioning it in the replys. Alex is also an amazing musician and artist. Tbh i didnt really know who he was at the time of writing this comment originally. Was a baby fan.
Can we just appreciate how Lacamoire as good as Lin-Manuel Miranda? Lin didn't create everything alone lol.
@@O7ghostX Lacamoire's genius is in helping to develop an idea. The idea itself came completely from Lin.
yes
Haydnz he’s amazing but not as good as Lin.
The moment has been taken many times.
We are not worthy of this crazy level of music theory analysis. You're the Batman of RUclips. The hero we need but don't deserve
LOL
Do you ever plan on making a Hamilton video? Would really love to hear about this piece of art from your perspective
@@mdotpreis So many are coming. So many. Just you wait

Agreed, we enjoyed and learned so much from this video. I saw it live tonight, and it was a life experience. Choking on held tears during "Unimaginable".
The mi-re in 'women' at the end of 'best of wives and best of women' that doesn't resolve broke me and I'll never be okay again
Same.. that's exactly what I thought when I heard him say that..
;-;
😭😭😭😭
Me too, I was like "noooooo...." 😭😭😭
Alexander Hamilton died at 47 years old. There are 47 songs in Hamilton (including Lauren's Interlude).
Phillip Hamilton died at 19 years old. There are 19 songs in Hamilton that has Philip is in.
In the song Alexander Hamilton, Eliza says 47 words.
George shoots Philip at seven. Alexander Hamilton dies in July, the seventh month.
In My Shot, Hamilton says "Is it like a beat without a melody?"
In Stay Alive (Reprise), The melody cuts out when Philip is on his deathbed and we hear a beat. His heartbeat.
In My Shot, Hamilton says "I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory. When’s it gonna get me? In my sleep, seven feet ahead of me?"
In Blow Us All Away, George Eaker shoots Philip at seven.
In Aaron Burr, Sir, Burr says "Fools who run their mouths wind up dead" Then Lauren immediately says "Aya-yo-ya-yo-yo what time is it?"
Lauren was eventually the first person in the room to die.
I found some of these on Reddit and Quora but I forgot where...
Coincidence? I think not!
Ohhh...that gives me shivers. Well done.
Also in The World Was Wide Enough while Alexander dies he said "There is no beat, no melody" quoting back to My Shot and a few others, wondering what deaths sounds like. In Stay Alive Reprise the beat is Philips heartbeat. When he dies there is no beat, no melody.
I think the July and seven one is a coincidence, but the others are probably intended.
What about “dear theodosia-reprise?”
Rodney Guan Philip is in 2 songs... where did you get the other 17??

I don't have anywhere near the musical mastery the creator does, but I noticed that a similar affect (the connotation snowball) and repetition is at play with the word "time." Hamilton never takes it, never wastes it, is always running out of it. Eliza asks for a fraction of it. Burr started at the same one. Maria became a pastime, once wasn't the last time. Jefferson believes it is time to stand. Washington has a last one. Alexander told him when it comes to fire his weapon in the air. Phillip changed the melody every time. Eliza needs some of it in order to forgive Alexander. Burr says Hamilton cost him for the last time, and then offers to meet him any time or place.
Of course there are more, but by the point in the Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story where everyone sings, "Time," it punches you right in the gut.
Great observation!
Thanks! Your content is fantastic. Even if the Hamilton stuff is done I hope you do looks into other stuff like this as well!
I noticed this, too, right at the very end where everyone sings "Time." Such a heartbreaking moment...
So true!
also in the first song in the show when they all sing "you never learned to take your-TIME" with an emphasis on the word time
Dude, i swear to god, I dropped my phone like four times watching this video because my mind just exploded.
At the end I just cried because I can't believe how perfectly well thought this musical is.
In the words of Michelle Obama, Hamilton is the most amazing piece of art i've ever seen.
Thank you so much for this video, seriously.
I also love how when Alexander has just died and Burr is singing, the "Who tells your story" lines they end on a minor because he has become the villain of the story, whereas because the rest of Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story is about Eliza telling their stories, it's hopeful and her death is a form of closure because, in the end, she has done her job and told the story (as we are seeing in the musical itself). It's two small, but effective, character arcs in one song. Very very cleverly done.
Burr didn't realise history had its eyes on him too.

Oh my gods, I need a full Adele/Theodosia mashup. That was too sad 😔
this is so sad, alexa play despacito
Came to say what the comment above says
are you in the percy jackson fandom? just a question since you said "oh my gods"
also that would kill my heart
Me too
@@dee1087 You do realize that Greco-Roman Gods exsisted long before Percy Jackson...right?
What kills me every damn time is Eliza's "In their eyes I see you, Alexander" in the orphanage part. Lin really wanted us to bawl
Also Eliza's face acting does the rest and I'm a crying mess after it every time
I have a feeling that he loves making us cry
I just wanted to add that when seeing it live, Phillip's heart beats are way louder and absorb the what theater, vibrating so they almost feel like your own heart breaking when the beats stop and Eliza screams
You get a better sense of it when watching it on Disney+. I don't cry after Phillip's death when listening to the soundtrack (at least not after my first couple of times hearing it lol), but I never fail to tear up during that scene when watching the play.
I don't understand much of reading music or music theory really, but this literally blows my mind how beautifully and purposefully all the songs were written and composed and I don't think I can love a play anymore than I love Hamilton
I wasn't looking at the screen, so when Alex started to play "It's Quiet Uptown", I literally said out loud "Oh God".
Also, when I saw this in DC, this woman in front of me said, "I wasn't expecting it to be so sad!" and I think that sums up all our reactions.
"Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story" makes me cry only after "Ever Yours, Alexander"...
The whole song is one big snowball like it says in the video, but the line that really breaks the dam for me is, "Oh, I can't wait too see you again, it's only a matter of time" as the song fades into eliza reuniting with everyone that died before her
It’s very very likely that Lin thought about all of this, but it’s funny for me to imagine his surprise as you somehow find a connection between all of this and he’s just like ok
Watching your videos made the live performance even better. I wasn't consciously thinking, "Oh, there's that progression again, and now I understand why it is there" but instead felt a heightened rush as repetitions and reiterations flared and enhanced emotions introduced earlier. Thank you!
It's quiet uptown is the SADDEST THING EVER
The song
The vocals
The acting
When Ham finally breaks down after Eliza forgives him and he remembers his son BROKE ME 😭😭😭😭
From then on I was a WRECK
BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE!
YUP.
ugh right? these are so amazing and i always cry even though he's telling me why im crying
but when you did WAIT FOR IT was it NON STOP???
okay bye
Were you willing to wait for it (wait for it) though?
I've only dealt with the basics of music theory, but to me the most effective part of the finale is the falling away of instruments and harmony and ending on a single a cappella note. This is Eliza letting go of the earth, of life...
Thanks for making me cry even harder!
And it can also symbolise unity! Everyone singing the same Noyes at once reminds me of the opening of most constitutions: "we, the people". I love how many interpretations this has!
I never imagined hearing It’s Quiet Uptown at the pharmacy down the road from my house. I thought I was gonna tear up.
Are you saying it was unimaginable? :P
aimhrialta Every single reply section of a comment in a Hamilton vid have non-stop puns!

It's a testament to how powerful this music really is that even an analysis of it is enough to bring you to tears. You did a great job of really distilling it down to the emotional core to deliver that gut punch.
Now I need to re-listen to the album for umpteenth time
I'm pretty sure I'm listened to the entire soundtrack about 189 times 😂 I'm rlly late to the fandom and only joined a couple months ago but the day I found it existed I listened to the soundtrack and now I do it daily 😂
Charlotte Rhodes I joined last week 😅
If this hasn’t been suggested already, I’d love an analysis of Non-Stop and just how it gets us so motivated and pumped up and wanting to work just like Hamilton! These videos are really informative, keep up the amazing work!
Non-Stop is insanely intricate. It's literally every song from the first act combined into one Act 1 finale song and it's just incredible.
23:20
"They say Angelica and Eliza...
were both by his side when he died."
When you put the cascade theme on top after the last "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story," I swear, I got the shiver over my entire freaking body, and that never happens to me. As someone who is in musical theatre school and is just now learning musical theory properly for the first time, these are some of my favorite videos of all time. Especially since you do it with Hamilton. This musical is literally the reason why I'm studying musical theory today. It changed my life, and your videos were part of that journey. Thank you!
When you said "background becomes foreground", it means the death that has always been looming in the background is now actually happening before our eyes. I haven't actually seen the musical, just listened to the tracks. To my knowledge there hasn't been an on-screen death as prominent as Philip's (Lauren's isn't shown, and there are some interrupted duels etc.). Also this drives home the point in the lyrics "I think of death so much that it's like a memory", and foreshadowing Hamilton's own death in the same way, at the same place.
Love your analysis. Really shows how good musical analysis can bring out the hidden meaning of the work.
In Satisfied, Angelica sings her name (Angelica Schuyler) the same way Eliza sings her name (Eliza) in The Schuyler Sisters.
And in Take A break Eliza sings Alexander's name (Alexander) the same way Angelica sings Alexander's name (Alexander) in Satisfied.

IT's BEEN TWO YEARS HOW DOES THIS HAVE NO REPLIES
this was, as always, incredible. i am, as always, sobbing. i can't believe i never noticed that "best of wives and best of women" was never resolved! i taught it to myself on piano for goodness sake. anyway, i hope this isn't the end of hamilton on your channel; you always remind me why i love it so much
It’s Quiet Uptown is my favorite song from this show. It so perfectly gives voice to unspeakable grief and anguish and somehow became a positive turning point in the Hamilton’s marriage. There’s so much going on in the song and I love that you’re talking about it.
It's quiet Uptown has been my favorite since I first heard. Utterly heartbreaking and beautiful.
I’m semi-binging this leading up to the Disney+ release, now I’m totally gonna have a much greater appreciation for the music.
I can‘t even read notes but this is so cool! I‘m really glad you got the ability to put in the animations and singers, it‘s really great!
This video got featured today on the official Hamilton App! Congratulations!

Holy shit! I'm so happy I thought this series was LONG over! We are working on some videos about Hamilton too and you're a huge inspiration for it
Why do I really want to write a fanfiction on the need of Ré to be calmed down by either Do, a really basic and chill guy or Mi, a mysterious bad boy?
I always like thinking about the comparisons between Take A Break, Blow Us All Away, and Stay Alive Reprise.
- The ending of Phillip and Eliza's "piano lesson" of sorts ends with Phillip not hitting the same notes from the general motif of "Ten Duel Commandments." He does not know the notes of eight or nine because he never got to see them.
- Similarly, sept, huit, and neuf he never gets right on the descending part for the same reason.
- Phillip's last words in the show are "Un, deu, troix" before he dies. Those are the three paces he did not receive in his duel with George Eacker. It's almost like the world was giving him those three extra seconds before he passed.
- In Blow Us All Away, we go from casual whistles to trembling flute melodies for the main leitmotif of the song, since Phillip becomes more scared & nervous in future events
It's been super rewarding to watch the quality of the content on your channel get better and better as time goes on, and it should go without saying that this is by far your most impressive video yet. All the supplemental material included to make the explanations clearer, all the guest singers and animators brought on to make the video more dynamic, all of it so clearly shows how much effort and passion you put into this project, and I'm incredibly happy with how it turned out. In particular, the segment where you described the true meaning of the Cascade theme, the repeated mentions of the concept of the "empty room", the emphasis of The Regrettes' punk rock cover of Helpless choosing not to "settle down" with Do, and most specifically, the highlighting on the heartbreaking failure of Best of Wives and Best of Women to give Eliza a proper resolution, all served as amazing examples to drive home your point of how emotionally effective that simple group of three notes was able to be. I'm really happy you were able to make this series as grand and professional as you wanted it to be, and as always, I'll be looking forward to what you have in store for the channel in the future :)
I cried as soon as he played the notes to "It's quiet uptown". The amount of pure and raw emotion in this show and that on which it provokes is unimaginable.
I'm not a musician, although I played the piano a bit when I was a kid. But I truly appreciated these lessons in musical theory and how the music of Hamilton was orchestrated and how they put it all together. To call them musical geniuses is an understatement. When I'm feeling emotional and listen to Hamilton, it really puts me over the edge and the tears fall! This was really fantastic. Thank you.
Dude.... thanks... I’m a Music student from Brazil and never heard anyone speaks so clearly and emotional about composition. Thanks again. I’m now crying but with a smile in my face!
Bless you and your insane attention to detail dude :')
I love that you got live singers to do it since I'm sure you got demonetized or copyright claimed for the other videos. The same happened to a friend of mine with an amazing Hamilton video. We're gonna do the same thing for our videos actually! Good thinking Howard
Actually, it was more to dramatize the music so you could see the music in a theatrical context. But yes, it always helps to err on the side of more original content!
@@HowardHoMusic ah, got you. Well those singers are incredibly talented. I hope to see more of your singing and rapping in future videos though!
Dude im sorry you don't have more subscribers. Your video essay s have made me cry. After I cried from watching the Hamilton show. Your videos have also convinced me to go back to school for music theory. I asked some advisers( 20yrs ago ) what I should do and the answer was, "what do you think you should do?" At the time what I thought was, "I should be a carpenter." So I became a carpenter for 12years. Then I became a nurse for the past 7 yrs. Throughout all of this I learned how to play guitar and sang karaoke on a weekly basis. Long story short, I sing to my kids daily, and I love music more than anything.
So I find myself at your channel. My wife has been listening to the Hamilton soundtrack for years and I have always sang along with the common verses and recognized melodies. But I bought tickets for mother's day, the last show in Rochester NY a couple of months ago. Now me and my kids sing Hamilton all day. Your videos are inspiring and much higher quality than you get credit for. I'll share the love brother.
Thanks for making my day. Your kids are lucky to have a such great parents!
You know the video is so good when it's 26-minute-long and you're still asking for more.
Keep up the good work, sir. :)
Lin-Manuel wrote that he was going to tear out our hearts and show them to us and so help me, he did. I was a sobbing wreck at the end of Act II.
Welcome back to another episode of 'why Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius'
The end of this video gave me chills. "Who lives, who dies, who tells your story" having the same melody as "Alexander Hamilton". Wow!
Also the line "best of wives and best of women" was like the last thing written on the letter left to her on his way to duel burr. So of course such a strong line was written by the man himself. A way with words to the last.
I know nothing of music...except I enjoy all kinds. I saw Hamilton in Chicago this past July. My kids are huge fans and I did not know what I was getting into. I mean, I knew a little history of Hamilton himself, but he was a footnote in my high school history book. The musical had me from the opening note and yes in tears. I appreciate the videos on why this musical had me in tears(I can not listen to Who Lives Who Dies with out tearing up to this day) and leaping to my feet for a standing ovation like the entire audience.
I never cry at anything, but It's Quiet Uptown makes me cry every.single.time.
I dont even have kids but dear lord I bawl every time
A hamildrop and a Howard Ho video within 24hrs?
I'm in heaven!
I’m not musically literate but I find these dissections of the music is absolutely beautiful. I already loved how the lyrics were intricately beautiful, knowing this makes this me appreciate Hamilton even more. Bravo
Your description and in depth explanation of chord progression is unparalleled.
Im not gonna lie all three of these I get close to tears at just a few notes of key songs at this point. It's written so well
Quite uptown is my favorite song, it felt so powerful and yet so heartbreaking. When I saw the show live it brought me to tears, not loud tears but silent tears. It drove me to feel the pain of Eliza and Alexander. This song might be the best on the album because of this.
Hearing Someone Like You over Dear Theodosia broke me in the best way, thank you
To be honest, I've been wondering for five solid weeks why the It's Quiet Uptown intro makes me cry instantly and why it haunts me from previous songs. Despite I just got my answer, I'm not happy because you made me cry
In 'Stay Alive (reprise)' the amplified ~bump-bump *beat, beat* bump-bump~ of the base quietly heard throughout is representative of Philip's heart beat. When he dies, the base cuts off, leading to Eliza's pained scream.
The first time i heard that, i sobbed so much.
OMG YES, and if you haven't seen it yet, I discuss the heartbeat theme at length in this video: ruclips.net/video/2oeRDXgRyHU/видео.html
I knew it was coming yet I was shaking from sobbing so hard....
God it’s quite uptown is going to make me sob Friday
OMG!!! *Jaw drops....slow clap* This series were amazing. Was a complete delightful way to invest my time. I learned so much with this, and was beautifully explained. Amazing.

“Time you enjoyed wasting was not wasted.” 😀
People will be watching and learning (and crying) for years. Great work.
I'm not crying, you're crying
I mean.. Yes.. Yes i am
we're all crying
:,)
I can never keep it together when you put the cascade theme after "Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story." Well done, Howard, you have made me cry once more. And this ain't my first rodeo.
Ngl i usually don't cry when i watch movies or listen to music, but its quiet uptown just hit me right in the feels. It really makes you feel the grief and regret Hamilton feels. And it makes you feel sympathy for him in the perfect way so you can connect with him again even after all he did to Eliza.
Those actors are so good I actually thought it was the new cast
Lin never fails to amaze me. He is truly a genius.
Brilliant. I cried just watching this video.
Howard Ho: shows the D major scale and the numbers for “alexander hamilton”
me, a violinist: so the notes on a violin for D major would be G-F#-G-F#-G-F#-E
also me: I CAN PLAY THAT-
I'm usually tearing up all the way through "Who Lives, who dies..." But Eliza's gasp at the end always sends me right over the edge.
This video made me cry, that's how many feelings those 3 notes can summon.
At 23:38 I thought "f*ck i'm gonna cry", aaaand I started crying right before you said "and if it has done its job, it makes us cry"
Brilliant video! You could make an amazing comparison of “first burn” and “burn”
i just imagine the mi-re-do snowball being like "MIREDOMIREDOMIREDOMIREDO" as it goes down the hill XD
the chord progression in the acapella "time" that the choir sings is always what gets to me.
That was absolutely beautiful. Knowing this makes the musical (and Lin) just more and more genius. Thanks for sharing your knowledge about all this.
As incredibly fascinating as this whole series is, it makes me relieved I've never tied my GPA to a music theory class.
This. This is what made me cry when I first listen to the original cast. That cascade line fills me with so many emotions that I had to cry. The beauty of that line it what cements it’s quiet uptown to be the most emotional song of the entire musical
I have absolutely zero idea what any of this means, but I love your videos anyway and have binge-watched almost all your Hamilton ones
Whoa, much appreciated!
When I first saw the word Howard and that it was pink. It reminded me of six
Yeeeeeeees! I missed "it was quiet uptown" in the last two videos!
These videos make me appreciate the muscial all over again
Anyone else sing Burr's part during the Dear Theodoshia instrumental?
Just me?
Okay.
Gosh I love that you called the 4 tones right after the introducing fanfare a “door squeak”. The violinists and and other strings have practised their whole life to just play a short series of notes resembling nothing but the pivotal sound that an old, rusty door makes. It tickles me and I find it kind of funny.
The mi re do representing Eliza is great, because although the show is about Alexander, it's almost a tribute to Eliza and her work to protect his legacy. And the first mi re do being on Hamilton works perfectly, since technically, she's a Hamilton too. And obviously at the end the mi re do on who tells your story indicates that she is the answer to that question
The lady singing as Eliza.. where can we find all her covers? She's amazing!!!!! Oh my goodness
Unimaginable makes me cry to most out of all the songs
I always thought it was just me that had a complete cry session at the end of this musical and now I’m crying again and I can’t take how beautiful this is.
I love the explanation of what Re is in this theory, and I have never felt more connected to a note as a singer in my life.
I would also like to note right after he says "spoiler alert", an add comes on saying "Vaping is an addiction" and I sat there like:... Okay, go ahead and spoil vaping for me why don't ya.
I would like to say, I do not vape smoke, do any of that, I just found it funny
Literally everytime i hear its quiet uptown i start crying, i dont even have to hear it, just singing it in my head makes me tear up
The singers are killing it in those songs you demonstrated
When you’re explaining music theory over a beat it sounds like... a super nerdy rap song (mean that in a good way, I’m this series biggest fan, just telling it how it is, will probably post a more relevant comment when I’m done w the video)
I have a very non-technical understanding of music theory, so this really helps me to put words to the concepts and feelings! Thank you so much for these, it's so helpful and empowering for those of us who literally aren't allowed to take these classes in school because they're not our majors, and they're very much appreciated!
This series has been amazing. I just watched Hamilton in Tampa last week and I’ve been obsessed with everything about it sense. That’s how I came across your channel. I’m so drawn to the music of this show. My love for music has come back in a way that I haven’t felt in a while. I will definitely be checking out sound fly and thank you for all of your incredible work!
