A simile is a type of metaphor, according to the Oxford Companion to the English Language. The confusion is that there are actually two definitions of metaphor, one that includes simile as a subspecies and one that does not. So if you learned that metaphor and simile are different, you're not wrong either! But for the purposes of this video, I'm using the definition that does include similes. Here's an article that helps to explain this more: www.litcharts.com/literary-devices-and-terms/metaphor
If you don't mind me asking, what ever happened to your next video in this series?
I was always tought that a metaphor is basically a similie but without like or as
Actually, I am sorry to say, but it is neither metaphor nor simile. Here Shrek is using the onion in a more scientific than a poetic mode; he is explaining a complex idea about ogres using the onion as a model. This renders his explanation an analogy, which is not a metaphor and not even figurative. :-)
@@adamusement Similes and analogies are the same thing. Your separation of "poetic" and "scientific" mode is completely artificial, and the words "simile" and "metaphor" (and "analogy" for that matter; "model" I'll agree is a more specific scientific usage) are used to describe the relevant entities in a variety of contexts, and notably in the context of discussing language itself (which is the context we're in here).
Another thing you didn’t mention is how Lin also uses the absence of rap as a metaphor. Notice how in the entire musical one of the only main characters that doesn’t rap is Eliza. The original actress for Eliza has even mentioned it, everyone else tries to get as many words in as possible but Eliza takes her time. She has these ballads and she draws out the words to symbolize the fact that everyone else doesn’t have enough time, but Eliza? She has time. She’s like the counter to Alex’s non-stop behavior and I️ think it’s beautiful how they show that
Ohhhh...very nice. Thanks for sharing.
She does beatbox though.
Tim Thomason well the beatboxing is the support/background for Phillips rap. Shes not the main one rapping, shes the support, the motherly figure.
That was deep bro
Also the King and the Farmer because they don't want things to change, while the revolutionaries all rap as a metaphor for war because they want change
A couple things to add:
1. Rap is also used as a metaphor of sharing similar mindset. Hamilton tells Angelica “You’re like me” so they’re similar and they both rap skillfully. However, Eliza never raps bc although she loves Hamilton, she is not like him.
2. Period literalism is also (kind of) used when Jefferson first comes on scene and he sings a Rag Time song which, compared to rap, is out of date. He’s been in France so he’s out of date and out of touch with everyone in America
I cover your second point in the next video: ruclips.net/video/84NcQT4Ekgw/видео.html
I keep forgetting that Hamilton doesn't actually look like Lin Manuel Miranda
💯😂
What are you talking about? They are the same person

Spread the word! And thanks!
i dont know if youve mentioned it before, but i think another couple cool metaphors in hamilton's style of music lie in king george singing very poppy love ballads (being sort of out of touch with the cool "hip-hop" thd youngsters are using these days) and thomas jefferson's opening song being a jazz tune (since he "basic'lly missed the late eighties")
Yes he mentioned it in other videos
Yes he did but still thank you for the comment. Only by stressing it in that context you opend my eyes to yet another hidden layer of meaning: namely I now see the link that the "late 80s" not only refer to the 1780s but additionally to the 1980s where hip-hop had its breakthrough - omg I wonder how many layers there still are to be discovered :D

Your video essays are so well-researched and well-presented! It is simply a joy to watch and learn more about Hamilton and Hip Hop.

A great video to come home to after a long, annoying day at school
I’m so hooked on this series!
I have completely fallen in love with your videos. I knew that there was a lot of depth and complexity to the musical choices made in Hamilton, but I don't know enough about rap/hip-hop or musical theory to even begin thinking about it. Thank you so much for these!
At the end you say that there's going to be a Part 3 focusing on Vernacular. Is that still going to happen? I am greatly enjoying all of your Hamilton video essays, but this series is particularly interesting to me.

Hamilton is so good. In my country no one really knows Hamilton,it's not famous here(maybe it's because we don't speak english and we are not really into musicals),so i found out about it like...2 months ago.And oh my god, your videos just made me love this show and Lin-Manuel even more.I heard that in America you are really divided about it?Like, some people love it and some hate it?I get that people don't like rap and history, and Lin put these things together, yeah, but i just wonder if these people really listened to the songs, like,REALLY listened to them. To me it just works and your videos told me why.
For a few seconds, I was confused at how a cow could cause war, kill and fight to the end.
I wish I could of got here in time but it premiered at 12 am where I live soooo yeah I actually am planing to write multiple essays on Hamilton’s writing considering all it’s foreshadowing, character dynamics and character personality it shows with its lyrics I don’t know anything about music stuff so I actually use this for reference. Thanks you since you always Blow us all away
Good luck on your essays!

I just watched Hamilton live before watching this video. It was awesome! Amazing analysis!
That note "that's Gandalf" I died

@@HowardHoMusic It would have been even funnier if he had also accepted the role of Dumbledore
One of the best parts of this video is the distinction made between rap and hip-hop. It's a point that gets overlooked so often, but it's an important distinction to make. Not the only great part of this analysis, but I'm glad it got pointed out.
Nice work!

Thank you for explaining that there is a difference between Rap and Hip Hop. Not alot of people get that.

Another example of musical literalism in Hamilton is the use of 17th century basso continuo with a harpsichord in Seaburry's and King George's parts. It's actually supposed to be anachronistic even for the 18th century and symbolizes the conflict between 17th century baroque monarchism and 18th century enlightment.
Ah yes, basso continuo. I forgot everything I learned about figured bass. LOL
thank you for the note at 11:35. I did a double take and nearly paused the video to google. :)

"OgReS aRe LiKe OnIoNs" that is a simale
Similes are a type of metaphor. If you go back to that part of the video, you can see that I wrote that underneath "Ogres are like onions."

@@HowardHoMusic 👏👏👏 checked it out.

So pretty much what you’re saying is, all the other musicals may have had the lyrics but they didn’t have the SAUCE💋👌🏽
"Ogre's are like onions" is actually a simile because it uses the word "like"
Finger to the throat means death!
Oops! Wrong movie!

ruclips.net/video/84NcQT4Ekgw/видео.html
One of the first 1000 Yea!!
"fits like a glove" is a simile not a metaphor lol
A simile is actually a type of metaphor. I made a note about it in the pinned comment.
Ogers are like onions is a simile
So is like a glove.
They're not metaphors
"Metaphor" is not just a sentence that uses "is" instead of "like." I know we were taught that in school, but that's only the tip of the iceberg. For example, when music represents an emotion, there is no sentence saying "music is love"...it just happens, and we understand that's the comparison. That's because metaphor can also refer to any type of poetic comparison, which also includes similes.
No fair
Where is the third part?
Just posted. Enjoy! ruclips.net/video/84NcQT4Ekgw/видео.html
I have to disagree about that rap has to rhythm, The best kind of rap I've heard works with sylibols, Lin is one of the only rappers that can use perfect rhythms without it sounding force nor are they tacky sounding.
I may be wrong, but I think sylibol play isn't a type of rhythming.
Shame on youtube / google for allowing lengthy ads to dominate viewer ability to see Hamilton post. Pulled earplugs. Wtf? How to get rid of really long ads? Just pull your plugs?
Where is part three???

metaphor what?
Of course Eminem has the highest vocabulary by double of the seconds and third place
To correct you, Mr Ho, Lin used violent imagery because it is a historical musical if it was about today you couldn't
Hmmmm....there are many songs today that have violent imagery. I'm not sure how you corrected me.
18th. Cool. Nice video
Next time tell everyone that a simile is a type of metaphor. That's all the comment section is talking about.🤣
