The expense may be worth it is not necessary to change all the capacitors with expensive ones. It is important to change the series capacitors in tweeter and midrange lines while the others may be substituted with good standard capacitors with fitted value according to the original ones.
Those are great speakers Nick and well worth the effort. I’m sure you have given them a new lease of life and sorry for butting in on your capacitor shopping. Cheers Graham
What capacitor shopping Graham? That was months ago! I must say those Chinese capacitors were excellent quality. They're lovely speakers, got them for about £50 from Bristol(very cheap). Had to sand down & varnish the veneer. Cheers
Look like standard polyester film caps to me. I've replaced the NP electrolytics in my JBL L-222's with standard value film caps no problems. Had to parallel some to get the value needed. The problem is I think like you have shown, high uF value sized films are really big! Thanks nick for the great videos.
Hi Danish, yes they're almost certainly "poly put the kettle on" as dave on eevblog calls them! The problem with their size is because they're rated at 250 volts, which is way higher than I needed. But cost was an issue so I went for these because they were relatively cheap compared to lower voltage ones I could have got in this country. Anyway they fit in the cabinet no problem. thanks for watching, nick
please tell me how to set my multimeter to test the capacitors...also can i test them while on the crossover and when they are not on the crossover?... I am new to using a multimeter... thanks
Hi Brian, if your meter has a capacitor range you can measure them, but you would need to disconnect one end as other parts in the circuit will influence the reading. This is only a basic test, it will not tell you the 'esr' effective series resistance, which will go high as a capacitor ages and becomes more like a resistor. The other problem with capacitors is they go leaky as they get older and start to conduct DC. So capacitor testing is a complex business. Hope that all makes sense. You could always send it to me for testing!
@@ptronix i don't see anthing on multimeter that says capacitors?...just want know what setting on the multi meter i should use...i believe the measurement is supposed to be close to what the capacitor says on it...what should the dial be set to on the multimeter mv or❓

Hi Mike, thanks for your kind words. Try this link for the capacitor seller on ebay. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175325552967?var=474554856062 That's for the 47uf but they do many other values. I highly recommend them. If the link doesn't work I'll email you. Best wishes Nick

I moved from wales to puerto rico. Anything from the uk, even a cap would include a standard 45quid postal cost😂 so yeah im shopping china with you sadly. Tories cutting off world trade i guess. used to be a pound or two a couple of years ago.
Oh well, pt' you gone and wasted your bally time then !!...Ah?, but you are going to get another 40 years out of those speakers, so nothing lost, reliability gained in the end though...magic !!
Not worth the effort.. Not brilliant compared to larger Tannoys they are dated.... Celestions 400 GBP. Tannoys 2 to 4 grand at least. For people who can't afford modern speakers so they can convince themselves that they r at least as good as modern equivalents😂
My Ditton 44 recapped are crap compared to my Tannoys which now sell for 4500 GBP... People who upgrade to an E Type jag... Have more money than the sense of a Lada driver
Why did u bother recapping already absolutely excellent sounding speakers .Was it because u really don't have such a high opinion of them.. Because they have a dated PA Speaker type of sound etc
