To answer Ryan’s question about why people want to be fake rich...
People at their core all want to be accepted by society. We want to feel like we’re part of the team and not rejected. So whether it’s positive attention from someone who is genuine or someone who is toxic...it’s still a positive admiration to boost your ego. That’s why “self love/self confidence” in a non-narcissistic way is important.
I pretend I’m “fake organized/ocd clean” to friends & family bc I am so afraid of being rejected as a hoarder. But I’m coming to terms with myself that it’s okay, I will heal from my hoarding habits and I will help other hoarders who struggle too!

Here in México we have an expression for people who are fake rich people and it is blof. We say "viven del blof" which means they live faking or "les gusta blofear" they like to show off but they don't really have money. That is so sad. Greetings from Guadalajara. ✋

In Texas they say big hat no cattle. In about 2010 Thomas J. Stanley published a book that I think was his last one before he died called Stop Acting Rich and Start Living Like A Real Millionaire. That book is full of stories of people pretending to be rich.

It’s the same with some people in South Africa. People try and live above their means so that they can keep up with the Joneses

It’s ego if you own it for the sole purpose of “status.” As a Dave Ramsey/Minimalist listener/follower, it’s fun owning things that add value and enhance my and my family’s life (and especially owning theose things without debt). Just bought a pretty expensive espresso machine. So good!

In my country, when you become an executive, there is an impulse to buy a high-end SUV. If you look at the special parking area reserved for executives, their cars all look the same. I think they just believe it is expected of them. And maybe it is, to be honest. There are people around you who are expecting you to look a certain way as an executive as you represent the company in certain circles. It's a bit of an office politics nightmare but in the end, it is still a choice!

I think it's kind of a primal instinct to be attracted to someone who has a lot of resources (such as money). I think that's why people would pretend to be rich, to be more attractive to the opposite sex and to be able to impregnate more women (nowadays: just have sex) or from a woman's perspective to be able to pick the best man from a bigger pool. However as is the case with a lot of primal instincts... it really doesn't serve a purpose in modern life when you think about it, when everyone is able to provide for all neccesary resources themselves.

I think that minimalism has some similarities with yoga...

People try to look rich because they don't believe there are people out there who don't care about money. It depends a lot on where they live or maybe who they watch on tv.

but what is wrong in impressing someone with new clothes on? maybe u can rent things if u dont want to buy. we want people to see us, and validate us. that is a human need. why is that wrong? what am I missing?
mark zuckerberg doesn't need to wear new clothes, he's already got the attention. i think rather its better to ask how much do we want. and would that much be enough for our lifetime. and who is it that i'm trying to prove.
