You know, it's sad that when I was a kid there was always an old guy out back of the hardware store who would sharpen your tools for you, or your Grampy or dad or an uncle would show you how. Since I decided to start growing some of my own food I've had a lot of lessons in how little we remember about how to use our own hands, get productive use out of our property. Thanks to you and people like you for documenting these basic skills for those of us who need a little help and shared knowledge!
Nice to see that there are still men who take care of their tools!! I learned from my dad and passed that on to my son. Very informative video and just what I was looking for. Thank you!!
I like to see a guy take care of his tools. I try to keep mine clean, sharp, and oiled too. I’ve seen a lot of guys who just toss them in a box or bag and let their tools rust. It’s a shame
Ah Ha! Now I know what that round whetstone is that I found in Grandpa's workshop. I still need to know the correct angle (in degrees) to replace that Home Despot blunt edge. Great video!
Can I borrow it? 🤪 bet you don't lend out your tools like my pops, to me only at his garage. I was sharpening it backwards the wrong way. Can't believe I forgot how and now thanks to you I will be more responsible with my tools
As a rule you want to be careful with power tools when sharpening an edge. You harden metal by heating it up and quenching it in water. You temper (make less brittle) metal by heating and slowly cooling. You don't want to make your tool hard and brittle and easy to break or soft and easy to nick. A hoe is a striking tool. Really hard metal is harder to sharpen.
+Benjamin Bodie I have been sold on PB Blaster the last couple of years. Seems to really break loose rust and the same company makes a general lubricant as well....Thanks for watching. Tim
Hate to show my ignorance, but what is the thing that you were rubbing on the file after you finished using it to sharpen the hoe? Was it sandpaper or emery cloth or something?
Darren K lol...not a question at all...I should have explained that in the video...I was cleaning my file with a Nicholson USA file brush...you can pick them up at Home Depot/Box stores around you....made in the USA...they will keep your files clean...Thanks for watching.

I see you only ran the bottom side of the blade with a file and stone. But, nothing on the inside of the blade until towards the end.
I have a question? What were you doing to your file? Was you using a coarse brush on it?
Thought it was Ron Swanson for a sec
Thanks.....Sharpening a Stirrup Hoe would be the same concept......Maybe do a video on it sometime.....Thanks for watching.....
OMG, Ron Swanson ?!
and now to work!
Why not use an angle grinder ? does it damage the edge?
I'm sure it would work but it probably removes too much metal too quickly.
