oh you mentioned tanukis, big mistake. time for a quick tanuki lore dump: tanukis are raccoon dogs, which are neither raccoons nor dogs, they're actually closer to foxes. only two types of raccoon dogs still exist, one of them is exclusive to japan (the actual tanuki kind) and the other ones are all across Asia (common raccoon dogs) that were domesticated for fur farms. they're super funny and weird animals, so in japan they gained the reputation of being somewhat mythical and there are yokai interpretations of them being shapeshifters, walking on water and so on. when i started the video i thought "oh this game is really not up my alley" but as the video went on my mind was kind of blown. the level design is really solid and it really nails the vintage vibe they were aiming for, way better than other attempts in recent history. the graphics also grew on me. the music is solid and it's really cool they got voice acting for the story.
