Well, they would all have been in production for years and probably weren't aware of one another
Guillermo's version did come with massive sized balls. Definitely not a children's movie by today's standards. It's closer to the Russian movie The Adventures of Buratino from 1959.

Happens all the time in movie production - a couple of competing stories on the same basic premise and some knockoffs. Could be coincidence or not. In this case, stop motion takes a long time so I think it's fair to say Guillermo del Toro had this idea in production for probably longer than Disney.

I love Pinocchio in the Shrek films! I especially love the scenes where he lying about wearing ladies’ underwear and where he tries not to lie about Shrek’s whereabouts.

I'm real happy for Del Toro's take because the other two really began to make me think the original tale wasn't all that good to begin with. I bet "Little Mermaid" is going to be in the cards for multiple releases next year too.

Guillermo del Toro is an artist. And has made better fairy tale movies than the House of Mouse could ever dream of.
My mom had an English translation of the original book, which I read because it was there on our shelf, and it's dark. Like, Pinocchio accidentally kills another kid when he throws a book at him and it smacks him at the right angle in the head. Also, the cricket is a ghost cricket because Pinocchio squishes him at the very beginning and then is haunted by him. It's possible that James Spader's version was the most book-accurate.
You forget that Pinocchio was hanged (and the book almost ended there), Geppetto was put on trial (and maybe imprisoned, I can't quite recall) and a whole bunch of other stuff. It's considered the first book specifically aimed at children, and it didn't shy away from dark elements and moral teachings.
Yes, most of the fairy tales (edit: Disney movies and such) you grew up on are bastardized from really dark versions (edit: much darker stories in novels and such). Hunchback, Mermaid, etc

We almost had 4 Pinocchio movies this year, the last one got pushed back to next year. Even weirder, 3 out of those 4 would have had Tom Kenny in them (Geppetto for True Story, Mussolini for the Del Toro one, and Pinocchio for Waters of Life).

GDT's Pinocchio is what we get from a filmmaker who is actually passionate about the craft.
Del toro version is pretty good. The only thing I liked in the disney version this year is that the cgi work on honest john is really really good. Someone worked hard to make it look natural and the facial expressions.
It's like different people worked on each character, because he does not look like he belongs there

@@foxhound13 in my appartement we all work in 3D. My roommate worked on the the Disney's pinnochio in the animation department and he told me the animators had the most fun animating the fox
Fun fact: the actor who played Pinocchio in soviet version (Buratino) voiced circus master in "True Story" (original, of course. Not dubbed)

Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio was the best one. Genuinely tear jerking, dark but still with heart, and Tom Kenny does the ebst fake italian accent possible.
And I used to have a dvd of that Pinocchio Punk 2099 movie. I have vague memories of it, to the point some may just be part of a fever dream. Or not. Who can tell with movies from the 2000's.

His last voicing was the Narrator in the first episode of Bad Batch Season 1.

It can’t be understated how good del toro’s version is. The handcrafted stop animation is wonderful and it’s a very well told and mature version of the story. Hope it gets plenty of love

We can laugh about Cameo, but I hired the Epic Voice Guy himself to record voiceover parts for my dad’s 70th birthday video, and the family is unanimous that it was the most badass gift ever.

I was really hopeful there would be some joke about Tom Kenny playing both Gepetto in the Pauly Shore movie and Mussolini in the Del Toro movie.
I can't tell if that Pauly Shore voice was added in or that was the actual voice used in the movie.
It was the actual voice.
And that is the same guy gave the most iconic line: "Leaning tower of Cheeza!" From Goofy Movie.
I also initially thought it was fake, but it is, tragically, 100% real.
Fun fact: the film was actually recast *with* him.

A true masterwork that is even bleaker than the GDT movie.
I always thought a Spielberg movie about a little boy robot looking for love sounded more like an SCTV version of a Spielberg movie than the the actual thing.
Except for where Spielberg tacked on his nonsense coda to what was **clearly** Kubrick's intended ending.

Guillermo Del Toro’s “Pinocchio” is a masterpiece, & it definately makes up for Disney’s “live-action” remake.
Like the divisive “Jeffrey Dahmer” show starring Evan Peters, del Toro’s take on Pinocchio is another big hit that Netflix desperately needed!

I know they're not exactly running on the same track, but I really like Lou Wilson's version of Pinocchio in Dimension 20. There's really something to a Pinocchio that snapped his nose off so he could be a semi-successful con artist.
One of my favorite movies of all time, actually, is a 1987 Filmation entry entitled Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night. So don't worry about "running on the same track" ;)
