Hello and Welcome to the Dreamcast Dreamland! For the next eighteen weeks Tuesdays on the channel will be dedicated to the Sega Dreamcast, Sega NAOMI and Sega Hikaru.
Since all three platforms share the same base architecture I thought it would be fun to include games from multiple families of Sega hardware in this series.
Up next: we have a bonus giveaway and tutorial! I get a lot of questions about the GDEMU for Dreamcast (whether it's worth it, how you install it, how to set up the GDMENU GUI) so I figured I'd do a little tutorial while also giving away a GDEMU! Rules are simple...1) you must be a subscriber and 2) the second rule is SOMEWHERE in the video...so listen closely.
But I love stuff like the GDEMU for retro gaming. It's so versatile and useful everyone should have one...especially because the retro gaming cd rom drives wont live forever and this extends the consoles life!

You have a great pilot voice. If we were nosediving at 30,000 ft and I heard you say "Just a bit of turbulence, gonna let you guys sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds." I would think "oh nice alright that sounds reasonable."

One of the best “Full Tutorial” about this upgrade so far. Been having a blast playing Tee Off Golf on a VGA computer screen lately.

My favorite was easily Crazy Taxi, can't believe how many hours I put into that game and the soundtrack. This was a great tutorial and huge fan of the channel, especially the Hyper Neo 64 stuff.

the original version of Crazy Taxi (dreamcast) has the best soundtrack. If you get the one for any current system, they changed the sound track.

You'd love the machines at my job. Imagine big-ass fans pouring into the side of a fridge-sized box full of servers, and because the fans are located externally, every single heat sink across dozens of motherboards are oriented identically to be fed by the air at the same time! \o/

Great video as always - I didn't realise just how easy these things are to install! My favourite game on the DC has to be Rez, hands down. Sure, there are more definitive versions out there, but the beta versions that have surfaced for the Dreamcast are fascinating... highly recommended!

May sound lame, but I have fond memories of playing NFL 2K2 on my friend's Dreamcast when we lived in Boston many years ago. I'd have to say that is my favorite.

My favorite game for the Dreamcast is Project Justice, I recently played a lot more with my friends online with Flycast in FIghtcade 2. It's a lot of fun.
Project Justice deserves more love than it gets for sure
The MODE is also a great alternative to the GDEMU

I'd probably still call Soul Calibur my favorite Dreamcast game. The sequels have been pretty good, but I still have a soft spot for the first one after the franchise rename. It was just so fluid after playing Soul Blade on PS1, gameplay wise as well as performance wise.

My favorite Dreamcast game is Elemental Gimmick Gear. A Zelda-like game that is not only excellent, but has been lost to time. It was totally unappreciated in it’s time (still is) so it makes a great metaphor for the system itself.
It def has a really interesting visual style
Great tutorial! I recommend this mod to everyone who has a Dreamcast. Also, favorite DC game is definitely Shenmue. Playing that the first time through when it came out is a really happy memory. My brother watched along like it was a movie.

Loved the tutorial! So simple! My favorite game on Dreamcast is Capcom VS SNK 2. I first picked it up when I was traveling to the Philippines. It was a whopping 300 pesos, which is like $6. Needless to say I bought dozens of games while I was there, but I always went back to CvS2. It’s still my favorite fighting game of all time! And the best version is the Dreamcast one!

Also, there's been a test that the more substantial 3d printed trays help with heat dispersal, it routes the air through the DC much like the CD tray does.

Man, fave game is a tough one. So many damn good games on the system. Think it's going to have to be E.G.G. Elemental Gimmick Gear, I'm a sucker for hand drawn art in my games and Zelda style adventure games/metroidvanias are my favorite genres.
Close second is going to have to be Jet Grind Radio, such a unique game.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 is my favorite Dreamcast game of all time. It's the fighting game that got me into the FGC (fighting game community) and it is a big reason why I am an event organizer today. I still own the original Dreamcast copy today but I try not to use it too much due to how difficult it is to find US copies and I worry about damaging my disk. Having a GDEMU would be great as a substitute.

Nice tutorial and overview. My favorite was probably Shenmue II, but I also liked quirky games like Cosmic Smash and Super Magnetic Neo. The Dreamcast was special.

@@VideoGameEsoterica I traded a webcam to a roommate of mine for Tech Romancer back in like 2000. Had no idea what it was other than Capcom made it. I think we ended up putting like 50 hours into that game

Thanks for the step by step instructions! This is a great tutorial for those of us uneasy around hardware. I'm split between Sonic Adventure and San Francisco Rush 2094 are my favorite DC games. I mean, maybe not counting some of the Naomi arcade stuff...

i would say skies of arcadia especially loved the vmu mini game it had which gave you items in the real game when you loaded it back up and also gave me a something to do in class lol, then sports games i liked ready 2 rumble and nfl blitz

Makes sense. It is one of the best 2D fighting games ever made
Mt favourite game on the dreamcast is Super Street Fighter 2 x. I have two copies (one sealed). It was a mail order only game in Japan from capcom club. It's the most accurate console port of the game and has a dip switch option to simulate the different arcade board revisions. I had lots of fun times playing against my brother on this.

Great option. I feel like backups stress the drive more then original GD-ROMs. My Dreamcast is the least modded of all my consoles. Only the CR2032 mod. Need to do the BIOS and fan replacement at least. As strange as it sounds , I like the chug of the original drive. The Saturn is a little easier as you can retain the drive with the Satiator.
The GD-Rom noises are iconic for sure. I miss them on the Dreamcast I use the GDEMU with
Hahaha for sure, my favorite dreams cast game has always been seaman. I’ve played that game for years and always find it to be so hilarious. It’s such a gem that could only have been made for this system! Absolutely one of the funniest video games I’ve ever seen.

I have plenty of favourites! Luckily I can play most of them on newer, even modern consoles (Rez, JSR, Ikaruga, most of SNK fighters), but the reason I keep it hooked is for that random checky game of Capcom Vs SNK 2. The perfect collision of my 90's teenager years.

The DC has so many great games its hard to choose. I'm currently having a great time with Skies of Arcadia, but Shenmue will always be my favourite game.
Shenmue felt like magic when it came out. Just a wholly new genre nobody had ever seen
Quick Question. Every tutorial or image I have seen for the GDmenu shows a 32GB SD card. Why are people limited themselves to 32gb? is there anything else you need to know if you use a larger GB SD card?
No it’s literally just what I had sitting around lol. My smallest SD card as I didn’t want to wipe one of my larger ones for the vid!

Ya gotta give those new indie games keeping the good old dreamcast alive! If I had to pick a newer game, probably xenocider but intrepid izzy is pretty solid too.

Hmm probably HOTD2 for me. People were chatting about DC a little on the mister discord so I fired up the DC yesterday and it’s starting to sound kind of awful. I’ll probably try replacing the fan and lubricating the drive but I think a GDEMU is in its future for sure. Thanks for the vid!

Thanks for the tutorial. Just ordered a clone recently, and just prepared the SD card. Can't wait to try it. Main reason I got the Dreamcast back in the day was Sonic Adventure, I even got the game before the console. Off course enjoyed others like Soul Calibur, Power Stone, DoA 2, Marvel vs Capcom, Daytona, etc etc

When I hook up my Dreamcast, I usually play Soul Reaver, Crazy Taxy or Typing of the Dead... The price for these knockoff boards is pretty reasonable... might consider getting one in the future.

many recommend removing the 12 volts from the source, is it really necessary?
You can put resistors in as well. It does make excess heat. How long until that matters 🤷🏻♂️
Favorite game is so tough but I have a soft spot for 2D fighters and really enjoyed Guilty Gear X on the Dreamcast. But could mention so many more perfect, gorgeous arcade ports like Last Blade 2 and SF3 DI and Capcom VS SNK 2 and.... How many favorites can we have again? ;-)

I love mine but there's some issues. Sometimes when I re-slot the SD cart the connector gets tweaked ever so slightly and it doesn't boot properly. Another issue is sometimes (especially the atomiswave games) will freeze. I've seen someone mention not to use microsd card adapters so maybe that's why. Besides that the GDEMU is great. I got a little bendable piece of plastic that I cut and wrapped around where the disk reader used to be better guide the airflow. Also my GDEMU didn't have the little sticker heat syncs. I wonder if that's bad.
The Atomiswave games freeze. Just part of the continuing work being done on them
Love me the dreamcast, my favorite game on it is the Japanese version of blue stinger. Ya see, the Japanese version has fixed cameras like classic resident evil games where the American version has a super janky 3rd person camera.

I'm gonna say my favourite dreamcast game is legacy of kain: soul weaver. It's shocking to know that version has 0 load times that are noticable AND it has better graphics than the pc version somehow.
Didn't think the GDemu would be that easy to install either. makes me curious about it now.
