    Most fermented foods I’ve had, like kimchis, zhacai, yacai, or sauces like doenjang and sauce tofu, are so strong flavored. Natto’s mild flavor surprised me.

      I feel exactly the same as you Kat-- natto smells like coffee grounds in a jar and just tastes a bit earthy and bitter-- nowhere near as pungent as doenjang or kimchi, you're so right. Those other things absolutely stink out my fridge and I can totally see why some people have a second smaller fridge in their kitchen for storing these sorts of foods.

      @@katl8825 A guy posted this similarity on a Reddit forum and I tried it out; held a jar of coffee in one hand and a little tray of Natto in another and swiped between the two, alternating a few times, sniffing deeply. I chuckled out loud because he's totally right. I'm so amused that you smell it too. :)

      @sophievanderbilt1325 2 года назад +3

      Yes I was so worried about trying it after seeing all the bad reviews about it’s smell. But I found it to be really mild! Sometimes the slimy texture weirds me out still, but I’m actually acquiring a taste for that. It’s just so different from the foods I grew up eating (mostly German and Hungarian traditional foods).

      I know these are old comments but try some baking soda and lemon in a little pot, and leave it in your fridge, that should help with the smells 👍

    Store-bought natto smells like ground coffee beans and instant coffee too, for that matter. Weird. The best thing to mix into it is Kewpie Deep Roasted Sesame Dressing, just a small dollop and mix. I'd be so thrilled for just one person to try this and go 'WOW! Yeah!' But your suggestion of adding chopped avocado to my Kewpie Sesame Natto sounds even better, so I'd better level up tomorrow morning. ;)

    • @LAK_770
      @LAK_770 Год назад +2

      I saw your comment the other day and tried this. So here you go - WOW, YEAH! This really was it for me. When I tried Natto I was surprised how mild it was considering its notorious reputation, and honestly beyond the fun texture it bored me. Like bland nutty beans with a hint of instant coffee and a very slight “off” aroma. I tried a lot of things to make it shine, and roasted sesame sauce was the key - it was exactly what it needed, it doesn’t hide the flavor, it’s not too different, but it adds some sweet richness and really allows the texture and body of the beans to do their job

    I've always been curious about natto. Maybe five or six years ago I tried it for the very first time and enjoyed it! The taste was pretty bland on its own (so you def need the seasoning packets) and the smell/texture is not at all offensive once you get used to it. My husband likes it a lot too!

  • @v1c4r10u5
    @v1c4r10u5 3 года назад +2

    You're right-- it took me about three tries to get on the natto bandwagon. The first time we had it at school, I was like 'eugh no this isn't for me.' I could get past the stank, but not the texture! The next time I managed to eat about half of the little cup-- one of my fellow teachers gave me the tip of not mixing it so much to reduce the slimy texture and it really helped! The third time I ate the whole thing! That slimy texture is really prized here (Japan) compared to abroad, where that texture is pretty reviled.

    Love natto, thanks for this episode. The avocado version looked delicious, I have to try that.
    If you live in Stockholm, you can find it in the freezer at Japanska Torget on Tegnérgatan. It is kind of expensive though, and it doesn't feel very environmentally friendly with all these styrofoam and plastic packages.
    You can buy a big pack of the bacteria online, for instance from Amazon, for almost nothing, and then buy big bags of dried soybeans and ferment yourself if you have equipment like a yogurt or fermentation machine. The bacteria likes it to be warmer than the lactic-acid bacteria used for instance kombucha or kimchi apparently, so room temperature won't work. I'm seriously considering it, but it's yet another appliance in a kitchen already crowded with them...

    I've heard of Natto before, and I haven't tried it yet. If I make one of the 3 recipes, I think I would love to try the 3rd recipe with avocado first.

    Am I glad I came across your channel. I saw how a spouse of a vlogger make natto & it was so off-putting, not something I would attempt. But your demo has changed my mind & I will definitely get a pack of natto to try. Thank you for sharing. A happy 2021 to you & family.

      @@JoseEllen1 Roger that. Okay, these are the first places I found which if the passion were mine, I'd message first to ask about Natto availability in store before heading over to shop: Yumi-Hana- Zurich, Nishi Japan Shop- a few locations in Zurich, Asia Way- Zurich, Lian Hua- Zurich, Fabulous The Vegan Shop- Bremgarten, Uchitomi-Lausanne, Altnatura bio Supermarkt- Zurich, Altnatura Organic Supermarkt- Bern and lastly NaturKraftWerke in Seegraben. There are many more but have you tried any of these? Good luck, I'm excited to have joined the department Sargent and hope that the winter time mission (codename Natto-a-go-go) is a success. xo :D

    Kimchi natto is my favorite. I make homemade kimchi but I just chop everything up so it’s ready to scoop out and add to everything (I think it’s called lazy kimchi?). I’m not here impressing anyone with beautifully stacked layers of kimchi so it’s good enough for me!
    I also like it with gaji namul. Basically any spicy-garlicky veg! Also, I didn’t think it was that smelly like most people complain about. Maybe I just like strong flavored foods.

    I like to add natto to a bowl of tamago kake gohan. Here in the states chicken eggs are so bland so I prefer raw duck egg. The yolk has a lot more fat and richness.

    Just had natto for the first time today. I thought it was decent (and I'm a picky eater !!) They smell was not as bad as I thought. I used pita chips. But glad I watched your video before trying it.

    Went to the nearby Japanese store, bought and made the classic version. It's not bad, there's just nothing to it.. Will try other versions cause it lacks flavour oddly enough. The texture is exactly what I expected and it's not very pleasant. Thanks for the video!

    Although I didn't like natto the first time I tried it, I challenged myself to keep giving it a go. Now I love it! First time I really found it delicious was at a countryside inn, over hot rice with lots of green onion for breakfast. I also love tororo (grated yam), another slimy food. So good over the barley/rice they serve at gyutan (beef tongue) restaurants. Miss both foods so much!

      Oh yes, tororo is great too! The combination you mention with gyutan... bringing back izayaka memories from Japan!

    I didn't like natto when I first tried it. I'm not used to disliking a food, I find that I enjoy most things.
    After reading about it, a lot of Japanese people said that Natto is an acquired taste even for Japanese people, so I felt less bad.
    By the 3rd time I ate natto I was hooked.
    I eat it by itself with a small dash of mustard and a spritz of shoyu.
