  • Mowing tall grass, short grass and everything in between with a bobcat mower and seeing how the build quality stands up to the competition. In the coming 9 part series we break the major mower companies up into 3 categories. Heavy duty, Medium duty and light medium duty. This bobcat mower review was put into the light medium duty category for this test along with hustler and husqvarna. The cut quality was good but there are a few major red flags that need to be known before you buy one for yourself. You'll see that in todays video.

As a QuickCat 36” owner for the past 13 months, let me weigh in here. Great video, but one easy fix would have solved the biggest problem you guys felt it had.
9:55 In a real life scenario, you would raise the discharge chute. I think not many mowers have this feature, so maybe you didn’t know it and left it down, but you can raise the discharge chute on the QuickCat to any position (90 degrees, 45 degrees, etc) and it will stay in that position until you move it again. So on that yard you would have the discharge up all the way which would improve cut quality even more as the mower was able to discharge more.
12:10 I can guarantee you 100% the jerky steering issue is because of how the handlebar is adjusted on the machine you tested. I had this same issue for the first 5 hours of use, and thought I made a mistake buying this mower. Too quick starts, bumps would make my hands jump and affect steering, all kinds of bad stuff. Finally figured out that the adjustable front handlebar was too far forward for my sized hands. I moved it back as far as it would go and all the issues went away because I could wrap the front of my fingers around the bar, rather than just rest my fingertips on it. I see in the video it is in the full forward position, which I would bet ANYTHING is causing those issues. (Maybe an improvement for BOB-CAT is to ship them from the factory in the shortest position possible, and not the longest.)
12:21 Technique helps, but it still takes too much force. Definitely not a smooth motion. I have actually started wearing the metal on the parking brake.
Again, great video and entertaining series idea!

It took me about a hour to get used to my quickcat but I had never used one ever. My daughter helps me sometimes for a full day and she loves it and runs it like a pro. If a 14 kid can run this thing anyone can well maybe not those in the video :) Ed Wright mention that a piece go out in 1500 hours and Im pretty thats not true because I have 200 hours on mine and went and looked it the part and it shows no wear at all. Even if it did. I will make at least $90000 off of this mower in that time span.

Stan. Those controller bars are completely adjustable. I own a BOBCAT Quick Cat 36” stand on and I LOVE LOVE IT! The new quick cats are far improved aswell. The second one they released with major improvements as they are relatively new to the stand on market. The new ones have the bangles that are thicker and more comfortable and they slow down when u let go instead of stopping right away- they have the dampeners I think. They also have a new fuel gauge ... what you guys forgot to cover in the video is the BOBCAT-MOWERS exclusive turf tires. They are something special! Amazing traction, SELF CLEANING (results in the amazing traction, and they cause very little turf damage). I also have to respectively disagree with you on the fact that it is a “light duty” mower. Now maybe it just falls into that because of the low starting price of somewhere between $6200-3800 36”-60”... but it’s built with 7 gauge steel, the Maintainence is SOOO easy on it and the castor wheels are removable which is amazing if you get a flat tire. Luckily bobcat is an amazing company backing their product with a 6year 2000 hour warranty. And the predator pro with a 6year 2750 hour warranty!!! The company is great and all made in America! BOB-CAT mowers are very underrated IMO because they simply aren’t that popular in some areas for some reason but here in Chicagoland bobcats and Wright’s and (some toros )are the GO-TO mowers ... they also have walk behinds that clearly are built to last... as you always see them being sold on Craigslist... years and years later because they RETAIN THEIR VALUE and last FOREVER. If anybody is interested in seeing BOB-CAT mowers content please follow my Instagram @candilawncare and if you have any questions don’t be hesitant to comment on this post or DM me!

Bobcat and Scag at one time were the only game in town. I ran the Bobcat and my partner ran the Scag. We had 36" walk behind machines from the late 80ies. I remember a landscaper lost part of his foot to a Bobcat. Everyone used to catch grass and dump the catcher into those lagrge green barrels. So those would get pushed around and people would get lazy and leave the blades engaged while dumping the catcher into the barrel. So, there were tabs on the hand controls and as the machine got old those tabs would wear out and for that guy one jumped off and the machine did a wheelie while he was dumping out the grass catcher in front of the machine.... The alternative was a Snapper 21" push lawnmower w/ a Briggs & Stratton motor. Now all of the machines cost $14K and can cut acers and acers a day. We had to walk all day and the Bobcat was perfect for me and my pace while the Scag was too slow in the lower gear and too fast in the next gear. After that I went into construction and I use a old Farmall tractor w/ a deck to cut my place...

If you loosened up the front handle bar where the tips of your fingers rest and moved it back all the way, the "travel" would be less. Therefore the touchiness of the machine might be easier to handle. I have a Gravely Pro Stance 36" and John Deere 652R 52" and there is more gap between the sticks and finger tip bar on the JD 652R then the Gravely 36. The Gravely is less fatiguing on the hands in part I think due to the spacing as well as the dampening. Once I built up more hand strength, I didn't notice the spacing/distance anymore on the JD 652R and it became the norm but it was a little herky jerky to start. Great video!

You hit the nail on the head, that is exactly why the mower is too jerky. I own a 36" QuickCat and wanted to return it until I found out the handlebars were adjustable. Set them all the way back (instead of how it shipped, all the way forward) and it made all the difference in the world.

Not a user of these machines, so may be talking out of my bottom, but this one, at least, seems to be suffering a basic design fault?
Because the operator is using their hands to move the controls it means that any movement is transferred directly to the lever which is both fatigueing and a control issue.
I can see why they need to be moved forward as it means if they get snagged by a branck, or whatever, it will stop rather than take off but...
What I would suggest is having comfortable hand rests, which will stabilise the operator - especially if they can lock their thumbs under it, and the levers a little ahead if them which the operator can pull back on with their fingertips for much better control. If there is a brush guard over the levers it will both prevent the levers from catching on things AND protect the operators fingers from low brush when working under plants.

Hustler had a control years ago which was a tbar setup on the Shortcut 1500 series stand up/sit down mowers which wold be ideal for stand up mowers nowadays. If I am not mistaken they have started using a similar setup on their newer stand up mowers. I never understood why the stand up mowers had these kind of controls.. seems very non used friendly to me.

Obviously I'm a little biased lol- 25hp 61" Bobcat sit down ZTR has been my main mower since 2000.
It's on it's 2nd engine- the original Kohler lasted mt 3500 hrs, which I can't complain about. It's all in how you take care of it; I haven't been the most faithful in keeping timely on my maintenance.
I like the bobcat because it's lighter than some exmarks, & definitely lighter than scags, which means I don't get buried on soft ground in the spring like other guys. Being a solo operator I don't know too many guys out there still making a living with a 22 yr old zero turn; most guys beat their equipment & trade up for newer all the time

Stan. We have just purchased our 2nd Bobcat Stander. 1st one is 3 years old with 1831 hours on it and When I first got it, hated it. It wasn't the mower, it was me. At 6-2 inches tall and having a keg in front of my 6 pack abs, it had me at a disadvantage maintaining balance. But after 100 hours or so, would not have anything else. I have had the procat 52 and this thing will mow circles around it. I have noticed a major drop in production time on properties having 2 of these going as opposed to 1 52 and 60 gravely ZTR.

I have the quickcat 48 AND LOVE IT. its $5k less and I could buy 2 for the price of the walker plus I can mow in travel mode at 11mph and have and you can also flip the foot plate up and mow walking behind it. I drive it like you would a horse you kinda stand in the sturrips I guess I would call it. My 15 yo daughter works for me on breaks and the weekends and she is very petite and rocks this thing. She loves it more than my Ferris. I have a 2.5 acre yard I maintain for a customer and it used to take 3 hours and with this its right at 1.5 hours and it will drive sideways on some very steep hills and up very steep hills that my ZTR only dreams of doing.
No offense Brian buy you dont even use standers and this is my first ever and I couldnt be pleased more especially for the price. I also got a rackem bagger and it will pack it full.

BOB-CAT has by far the best stand on mower next to the new gravely is pretty good also. Very biased reviews. The "cheap Home Depot residential" parking brake is the best design for a parking brake, and the operator presence sensor in the control levers is an awesome thing. It does not cause the mower to cut out when you hit a bump, they have to be in the neutral position before they go out far enough to trigger the safety. The "chattering" while driving was also a bunch of made up BS because that is never a problem unless you have inexperienced operators. Also the 6 year 2000 hour warranty should say something about how well they are built or else they wouldn't be able to offer that, and BOB-CAT will 100% stand behind the warranty if there is ever an issue. Maybe you should try and make an unbiased review sometime.

I have ever use Bobcats to mow lawn. I recognize that wal kbehide ones mow lawn very nice but one thing I don't like is that walk behide Bobcats use belt not hydraulic so when rain or water makes it difficult to mow.
About stand on Bobcats, I don't like tires because it is too big so my customers are scared of big tires that make them think about a car running on their yards.
I love wright stander and always purchase them to mow lawn. Wright stander cuts grass nice and easy to ride.

if the cut quality is as good as you say then they should fix the ergos and the jerky problem. Because the mower looks great and has a cool name.

Commercial use, this mower is an A to B mower. She will take you into bigger lawns, with out the extra cost. Understand though, you will need to save you're money cause she's not going to last forever. Homeowner wise, great mower, takes some getting used to, but cuts well. This mower should last the lifetime of your yard.

Stan ur great keep this in mind the whole thing for the best cut especially when it comes to cutting thick high weeds and grass is the amount of material it can move per second if a company comes out with a deck system that can move the material out from under the deck quicker will allow the blades to get that suction quicker and give you a cleaner cut each time

Bought a 48" and 36" going into last years season. I have really been disappointed. I got sold on the long warranty, and even still the dealer doesn't want to work on it. Engine sputters and loses power. Always used good gas, none of my other machines have this problem. Rides like a freaking bucking bronco and deck clumps badly in wet grass. On the plus side, it is FAST and I like the control weights and layout. Another niggle is the piping on the pad you lean against, it runs right where your thighs and knees are and becomes uncomfortable as they dig into you while mowing a long time. No fuel gauge and the reserve switch has broken off so you need a pair of vice-grips to move it. Should have bought Exmark or Scag

Forgot, I see you've worn the Volvo shirt a few times lately - have you checked out their EW180D or EW210D wheeled excavators yet? I figure they would be a very useful addition to your fleet, especially with some of the attachments that are available for them* - not just "Volvo" ones but there are many, many other companies that just do them for all brands and allow excavators (as a class of vehicle) to do things nothing else can?

Own two 61" riders and one 48" stand on Bobcats. Beasts, affordable, reliable. 32 years in business. Owned 3 exact same 60? John Deere z riders and nothing but break downs in sync among all three only to find new replacement part numbers which indicates issues. Owned walker mnfg 42" rider/bagger many years ago-the worst machine ever. Tried scags early on, but wasn't happy with dealer service then. Now I don't even need a dealer. I call my sales dealer for replacement parts and slap em in myself. Easier. All three bobcats under 3yr 3000 he warrantee. Needed one carb, one seat safety switch, one PTO switch. Not bad for 3 machines avg age 2 years.

If you don’t lean forward with the pad on the stand on mower it’s going to be jerky and your balance is going to be all thrown off. You can not ride something wrong and complain about the way it rides. That would be like standing on the seat of a car and complaining they made the roof too low. You gotta lean with the pad!! How do these guys not know this after hours of using it? Do you think the company angled the pad just bc they wanted to make you look stupid? Or do you think it’s angled for an actual purpose??? Hmm 🤔
