Seeing this video is like looking at a ghost. So unreal. Thank you for your efforts. This needs to be put on PBS it deserves a wider audience.

I am always so fascinated in the history of this particular Airfield and the airmen and women who served at Grafton and surrounding airfields close by. Walking around this old airbase, one cannot help but imagine how it looked and felt all those years ago. Even to this day , people find old relics left behind by personnel. I went to visit Grafton Underwood in 1966. The runways and all the buildings were still there. Mum took me to dad’s barracks. A farmer lived in the control tower. Dad met mum at the 3 Cocks Inn, and he would ride his bicycle to Kettering to visit her. I was very blessed to see it still there. Awesome video and work! Thank you for keeping it alive!

I am very fortunate to live not far away and make regular visits, only to see the undergrowth gradually taking over. I am glad I managed to at least capture some it before it finally disappears. My uncle flew out of Grafton Underwood with the 384th on the B-17 Bomber Section 8 and was shot down July 20,1944. Thanks for bringing it to the screen for me,well done!

Booska, Ackerson and Hollowell mentioned in this tribute were my fathers pilot, copilot and navigator. He was shot down with Ackerson on a plane called Section 8 and returning from the USA after leave completing 25 missions. I remember him telling me that Booska died when he hit a mountain fling in South America somewhere in the 50`s. I was over( the base) there in 2018 and people still remember these heroes and what they did.

@@KimDiscoveringHistory I just read a book that I thought you might be interested in if you haven't already read it. It's called, "Screaming Eagle" by Dale O. Smith. He was the commander of the 384th at Grafton Underwood. It details his experiences at the base and during his missions. It was a good read and definitely made this base come to life a bit more for me.

I absolutely agree with you Jason. Was chatting to Neill about a week or so ago about the tremendous achievement that this remarkable group has done for the community. My Father inlaw has erected many of the local airfield memorials around this area. Must ask him if he did the 384th. I had many requests to do a video documentary from the USA and families who had relatives based at GU. My emails inbox has been bombarded (pardon the pun). Very interesting video Kim. I remember stories from my friend Roy Deney who lived on the base in the war. His father was the gamekeeper there. It is a very solemn site.

Fantastic Kim, i live a couple of villages away from Grafton and used to deliver to a couple of small works that were in some of the old units, its a crying shame that at least one of these old bases couldn't be preserved, as you will know there were many bases around Northamptonshire and alas there is hardly anything left of them, to record this one as you have is a great record for the future, great work
Thank you John for your very interesting comments and support. Indeed, the one thing that stood out more than anything was the absence of buildings and infrastructure. A place of such importance and respect at such a huge loss of life of the servicemen who flew from this airbase. I think the landowner just wanted rid of everything without realising the importance of this site for generations to come. Up until the 1960's much of the infrastructure was still there just eroding away. Its beyond me why the land owner felt the need to destroy what evidence was left. Can't help suspecting that there was some bitterness from the land owner with the government for taking the land in the first place. Thank goodness for the Friends of the 384th Bomb group who have tirelessly tried to preserve what's left. Sorry for the ramble on....I just find it so sad that almost nothing is left. What a fantastic job Kim!! Myself and my best friend from Canada visited the base for 2 days a few years ago, that was before all the overgrowth was removed by 'The friends of 384th'. We had tickets to come back March of 2020 but COVID-19 had other plans. We will be back and will defiantly be using some of the information you have shared in this video.

what a fantastic video and even better news that the ops room has been saved from development and is to be restored to its war time state and turned into a museum and visitor centre. perhaps some volunteer roles to continue clearing the site and put picture boards up showing where things were as i know some have put up sign boards showing sites.

@@godfreybarton7654 I believe they have proposed to do some form of photo boards but not sure of what areas or buildings. That would be awesome to see and bring it to life so to speak. Ever since my first visit to these woods many years ago I have been so fascinated how life used to be at this airbase and no matter how many times I visit this site, I feel compelled to come back again and again. I feel there is still much to learn from old buildings and concrete footings/bases. Indeed it did belong to the RAF before the USAAF took over.. I do have the exact year written down somewhere. I believe it was around 1941/1942, but only guessing.

Kim thank you for you kind words and funnily enough I was showing a group of people around the old bomb dumps today as I have been working up there all week yes you are so right, lots buried and some interesting things. I've been told by the old woodman that they know where they are buried. They had some displaced persons (soldiers) who fought in the war who stayed on in the woods to work with the woodman and this friend of mine said they were Eastern Europeans who fought for the Germans then obviously could not go back to their homes after the war. I can't remember what country they were from but my friend said one of them used to stink the tent out eating dog food and they in the end had to push him out to eat it in the snow. As we know dog food in the 60s is not the same as dog food they eat now. Another story my friend said that they used to grumble at the cold in the woods ( the English Woodman) in the winter and the old German soldiers would say you should have been on the Russian front then you would know what real cold is like!! Last story they told my friend they would always cut the achilles tendons on the Russian POWs legs so they couldn't run anywhere (escape)! Tough times they were but these guys were very hard and tough. Anyway enough of my stories hope you found them interesting? Kind regards Mark Brewer

Booska, Ackerson and Hollowell mentioned in this tribute were my fathers pilot, copilot and navigator. He was shot down with Ackerson on a plane called Section 8 and returning from the USA after leave completing 25 missions. I remember him telling me that Booska died when he hit a mountain fling in South America somewhere in the 50`s. I was over( the base) there in 2018 and people still remember these heroes and what they did.

@@KimDiscoveringHistory I just read a book that I thought you might be interested in if you haven't already read it. It's called, "Screaming Eagle" by Dale O. Smith. He was the commander of the 384th at Grafton Underwood. It details his experiences at the base and during his missions. It was a good read and definitely made this base come to life a bit more for me.

I absolutely agree with you Jason. Was chatting to Neill about a week or so ago about the tremendous achievement that this remarkable group has done for the community. My Father inlaw has erected many of the local airfield memorials around this area. Must ask him if he did the 384th. I had many requests to do a video documentary from the USA and families who had relatives based at GU. My emails inbox has been bombarded (pardon the pun). Very interesting video Kim. I remember stories from my friend Roy Deney who lived on the base in the war. His father was the gamekeeper there. It is a very solemn site.

Fantastic Kim, i live a couple of villages away from Grafton and used to deliver to a couple of small works that were in some of the old units, its a crying shame that at least one of these old bases couldn't be preserved, as you will know there were many bases around Northamptonshire and alas there is hardly anything left of them, to record this one as you have is a great record for the future, great work
Thank you John for your very interesting comments and support. Indeed, the one thing that stood out more than anything was the absence of buildings and infrastructure. A place of such importance and respect at such a huge loss of life of the servicemen who flew from this airbase. I think the landowner just wanted rid of everything without realising the importance of this site for generations to come. Up until the 1960's much of the infrastructure was still there just eroding away. Its beyond me why the land owner felt the need to destroy what evidence was left. Can't help suspecting that there was some bitterness from the land owner with the government for taking the land in the first place. Thank goodness for the Friends of the 384th Bomb group who have tirelessly tried to preserve what's left. Sorry for the ramble on....I just find it so sad that almost nothing is left. This is certainly as good or perhaps better than anything that is on the History Channel these days. They were all so young back then, and now for the most part gone. But hopefully not forgotten. What a fantastic job Kim!! Myself and my best friend from Canada visited the base for 2 days a few years ago, that was before all the overgrowth was removed by 'The friends of 384th'. We had tickets to come back March of 2020 but COVID-19 had other plans. We will be back and will defiantly be using some of the information you have shared in this video.

what a fantastic video and even better news that the ops room has been saved from development and is to be restored to its war time state and turned into a museum and visitor centre. perhaps some volunteer roles to continue clearing the site and put picture boards up showing where things were as i know some have put up sign boards showing sites.

@@godfreybarton7654 I believe they have proposed to do some form of photo boards but not sure of what areas or buildings. That would be awesome to see and bring it to life so to speak. Ever since my first visit to these woods many years ago I have been so fascinated how life used to be at this airbase and no matter how many times I visit this site, I feel compelled to come back again and again. I feel there is still much to learn from old buildings and concrete footings/bases. Indeed it did belong to the RAF before the USAAF took over.. I do have the exact year written down somewhere. I believe it was around 1941/1942, but only guessing.
@@KimDiscoveringHistory I know that behind the hospital they put a road in to remove any dead airmen from the base and if I'm correct they went to Madingley in Cambridgeshire

yes you are so right, lots buried and some interesting things. I've been told by the old woodman that they know where they are buried.
They had some displaced persons (soldiers) who fought in the war who stayed on in the woods to work with the woodman and this friend of mine said they were Eastern Europeans who fought for the Germans then obviously could not go back to their homes after the war. I can't remember what country they were from but my friend said one of them used to stink the tent out eating dog food and they in the end had to push him out to eat it in the snow.
As we know dog food in the 60s is not the same as dog food they eat now.
Another story my friend said that they used to grumble at the cold in the woods ( the English Woodman) in the winter and the old German soldiers would say you should have been on the Russian front then you would know what real cold is like!!
Last story they told my friend they would always cut the achilles tendons on the Russian POWs legs so they couldn't run anywhere (escape)!
Tough times they were but these guys were very hard and tough.
Anyway enough of my stories hope you found them interesting?

Wow, fascinating stuff Mark. I do love these old accounts of servicemen and there memories of the war years. One day I would love to explore the otherside of the airbase and film this area. As this would be a fascinating area to document. Not really sure who to contact as this is private land and not open to the public like the communal area.
