how does unschooling affect preteens when thy are not writing on the same level as kids their age when they are put in situations where they are asked to write something? How does it affect the kids by their piers when they can't think to spell words on their own without seeing them written to copy down at age 11-13? How can you help them to obtain those writing & spelling skills so they can join in with the kids their age in sunday school settings?
Yes it's working been unschooling for 5 years now. When I first started I didn't know I was unschooling. I never heard if it. I had to deprogram my mind. Not listen to others on what I should be doing. It's an amazing journey that I'm glad we connected with.
Ive been very interested in trying this. I have some main concerns that prevent me from going full in: I have two littles and I worry that if I try this it will turn into a constant fight over screen time. I want to give my children choice in their education, but I worry that if there isn’t a strong basic foundation of information, it will eliminate the level of choice they have in the future. I also worry that by creating an entirely free-range environment, they’ll experience a culture shock in a more structured environment like different types of work or upper education. I’m wondering…do any other parents here blend this with homeschooling? Like a space where kids get to create their own homeschool- where the parent creates a routine more than a schedule of school, but the kid gets to choose most of the subjects? (I’m thinking how traditional school gives you main subjects and a few electives, but reverse that ratio).
I think people do create what you’re describing in Sudbury Valley type school. If you put the in the search, there are some videos. But 2 things I thought of while I was reading. Unschooled kids don’t have trouble transitioning to structure when it’s something they want. Mine did this for jobs, for college, etc. they had taken classes here and there and understood how it all worked. Plus maturity. Secondly, I think you’re envisioning unschooling as a totally feral lifestyle. I suppose people do choose something like that, but you don’t have to. “Interest led” meant focusing on their curiosities. Inevitably, they’d need some basic knowledge to go deeper, so that’s the catalyst to learn it. Life gives all sorts of opportunities. But it’s your own family - you can create whatever structure you want. I think you’re still thinking “school-like” or “hands-off” - and there’s so much in between there!

This is exactly what I'm going through! Especially being east Asian immigrant single mom. But it's just one day at a time and learning from the child about what learning is❤
I would like to add to this topic. Reading propane and gas gauges, pay and pump gas, double recipes, look for expiration dates on foods, fractions of a clock or candy bars or tape measure, etc. We are learning about endangered species right now. So they watch videos and research data facts about the animals. We read The One and Only Ivan and we are going to the zoo tomorrow. Math is mixed in and they don't realize we are doing math. We also located them on maps and my oldest looked up the latitude and longitude of the locations. My youngest creates structures on Roblox Studios for geometry. Hopefully this helps somebody out there

Not really. I do know a lot of people tap into the school system to use their free services. And I know a lot of people who step away from it because it's too structured in a behavior modification rewards/punishments way. You can always take a break from it if your child is unhappy. Sometimes kids just need a little more time - depending upon the actual speech issue.
Our 6 year old did not speak til she was 3. She has been in speech & occupational therapy since she was 2. It has helped so much with her learning her colors, abc's counting & so much more she goes 2days a week. We unschool her & let her learn when she wants to learn. She asks questuons about all differe t subjects & we teach her what she wants to know & very active on road trips, rivers, hiking. It was hard to get our mind out of school how it is burned into ur mind in society that u must go to school!! I hated it & feel for any child that hasto go by set of rules for 8 hrs a day 5 days a week! Childhood is a short season please don't miss it🥰
@@Rita-w4d I think it would. Unschooling is all about meeting kids where they are - instead of asking them to conform with everyone else. This is even more of a problem when a child has behavior and learning challenges. They really can’t conform. Unschooling flips that around and STARTS with the child. That often changes the entire dynamic.

my 12 year old grandson has ADHD and spectrum 1 on Autism and bad behavior problems would unscool help him
