  • If you tried to unscrew the drain valve and the plastic broke in half, the remaining stem will be difficult to remove. In this episode of Repair and Replace Vance explains how to effectively remove the stem from a broken plastic drain valve in a water heater. In most cases you'll have to use a small open ended hacksaw to cut plastic into several smaller pieces, then use needle nose pliers to pull out each piece.

    Thanks for posting this. Gave me the confidence to tackle the job. Was sure mine was going to break off. Plastic started to twist then snap... It broke loose without having to cut it out. YES!!!! I had the hacksaw ready in case. Used a brass nipple, ball valve, and hose adapter to reinstall. Used Teflon tape with pipe thread sealant over the tape. No leaks.. Works great.

    A big thank you! I spent hours on a 17-yr-old State Select with a leaking plastic drain valve just yesterday evening. It was clogged with sediment and wouldn't drain, but was leaking and needed replacement. It broke off when I tried to remove it. After researching ahead of time and finding that this was common, we had buckets and trash cans ready to collect the water. I didn't have the proper saw, so just used the blade out of my hacksaw and did it by hand. Your video was a great help and we were able to install a much better valve.

    We're replacing our water heater next week (non-emergency, but it is 20 years old and inadequate for our growing family). I'd like to replace the cheap plastic drain valve on the new one (we already had it delivered) with a really nice brass ball valve that we bought. Is there any reason not to do this now, before we install it?

    Hi. Mi plastic relief valve was apparently broken by the previous homeowners and I want to replace the valve but I have no way to connect a water hose to it due to the plastic threads broken off. Can you give me some advice on what should I do?

    • @AmreSupply
      @AmreSupply  2 месяца назад

      Thanks for watching. Without proper threads, you'll likely have to drain the water into containers or buckets. If the drain is close by you might be able to use tubing or a pvc pipe to channel the water down into the drain. In this case let the water out slowly so it doesn't spew out the nozzle.

  • @tschudy7175

      Try a blow torch, melt it away.

    • @AmreSupply

    • @AmreSupply
      @AmreSupply  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching. In some cases opening the drain valve all the way might allow you to clean it out but there are no guarantees. It is this reason why some people decide to install a 3/4" full port ball valve which is larger and is easier to manage. This is covered in this video here: ruclips.net/video/nGCejMsKNX4/видео.html

    • @AmreSupply
      @AmreSupply  3 года назад

      Hi Dinara, thank you for watching. It would be best to install a new drain valve. When you remove it, you can try cleaning up the threads with a wire brush and some vinegar. If the threads still look damaged or don't make a good seal then you might have to replace the tank.

    • @AmreSupply
      @AmreSupply  3 года назад

      Hi Steve, thank you for watching. Those sorts of things happen. Chances are the plastic might settle to the bottom of the water heater but depending on how small it is it might also travel through the system and could end up in one of the faucets. So keep an eye on your faucets as the plastic could cause a blockage but its hard to know for sure.
