Something to note for the data collection of string pins. A lot of messengers are in front of the 10 or 7 pin when coming across. It looks like as the headpin is hit, the string must be pulled down and that prevents the head pin from travelling backward far enough to take out a corner pin. This is a huge characteristic difference from freefall and should be noted and passed back to the string pin engineers.

Bowling String Pins reminds of when I was a kid and they had little bowling machines in the grocery stores that had little wooden balls that you threw and if they rolled over little square metal wires that looked like upside down staples the plastic pins above would rise up. I don’t know why Tom Clark is even wasting time with this ridiculous stuff. I, for one, will never ever bowl on this type of thing. Strings will interfere with carry which has already been proven. I'm an astrophysicist by training and I've bowled since I was a kid. One of the reasons I've always loved bowling is because the pins fly around and do crazy things. It's just fun to watch. String pins seem to take most of that out of the game, which is very disappointing for me. I don't think you can ever make string pin action as good as free fall, but I wonder if they have tried everything. Have they tried making the pins bouncier? In the modern game, the head pin does a lot (takes out the 10 on messengers, the 4 pin on light hits). Could you make just the head pin out of a bouncier material, since it needs to do more work? Or maybe extend this to the 1, 2, and 3 pins? Does making the pins lighter or heavier help? Could redistributing the weight within the bowling pin help? Or maybe lighter or more flexible strings?

    • @JoshFiver
      @JoshFiver 2 месяца назад

One thing I found that they did, is make the strings longer, 36 inches in length, opposed to a shorter length. This helps, but you know as well as anyone, you’ll never get the same hit. Couple that with the attachment on the top of the pin, and it is a losing battle, imo.

First thing you will notice is how much quieter the center is with strings. Pin action is less and off hits seem to react differently. The strings bumping into a pin is one of the main problems. This technique is meant for carnival games, amusement parks, and used in bumper pin games, not meant for the national tour. I cant believe after all this time they are just now deciding this is a good idea to mess with the pins. Canada had Quille decades ago, and yes, there were problems even in the very first game I played. Tangled pins, misspots, pins leaves changing from one side of the lane to the other.
I can see why bowlers earning a living with bowling may not object, but for bowling purists, this is not for us. We want no strings changing any part of the carry, interfering, getting respotted. Its a joke to ignore that string pins will too also have mechanical shortfalls, not realized while they are new. For me the string interfering in carry potential or providing carry due to the string changes the outcome of a frame. I cant wait for a pin on national TV to do something so odd that it ruins the string pin takeover for good.

What the hell is this "string" crap? Scrabble jumped the shark when "political correctness" took almost all words involving ethnicity or body functions out of the dictionary for being "offensive" and chess jumped the shark when ties were so common they had to do a weird rule (forgot the term for it) where in the final game to prevent the match being tied they give one player the win if the game is a tie but the other player first move and more time on the clock. Now bowling has that "string". The pins don't look the same when they fall anymore.

Attention PBA but this is Carnival Bowling. You have to admit this is pretty bad. String pins and Pros do not MIX. That being said congrats to EJ. Amazing bowling.

Program director ruins many shots by shifting camera angles right before the ball hits the pins. Must not be a bowler.

String pins blow......................Get a clue PBA.

Sounds like they are hitting pumpkins. Sounds weak. Ive been watching PBA since 1987. The string pins limits pin action and just falls flat with me. They can barely break 200.

Well, the string pins used in these two "experimental" regionals are clearly much better than the awful string pins (with shorter strings) from a few years ago. Those were cringeworthy to watch, whereas these are only mildly disappointing. It does seem that there is less pin action overall, e.g., it's hard for a random messenger from the right side to take out a 4 pin on a high hit, which does happen occasionally on free fall pins (and is exciting!). Clearly, however, the best bowlers still rise to the top, so I would say the competition results are legitimate. Randy Pedersen has said that two-handed bowling, with its increased power (revs and speed), has put the "wow factor" into bowling. String pins, on the other hand, seem to take the wow factor out of bowling. Pre-1920, baseball had what is known as the "dead ball" era. Could string pins usher in the "dead pin" era?

String pins should be left for the arcade and two handed bowlers should be in a league of their own. It's sad to see how much the sport has fallen.

I refuse to continue watching the PBA in complete protest if string pins are the future. Please don't go through with this.
    Sincerely, a longtime fan.

String Pinsetters...what crap..they come to my center, I'm quitting and done with bowling and I have been bowling for 35 years now 🙄 It's just another way for the USBC to try and control high scores as they are harder to strike on. I think they are getting tired of all the 300s easily thrown now and are trying to throw something in there to lower the scores. All the 300s make people say bowling is easy and boring so they are probably trying something different to bring attention to bowling...this is not the way to do it 🙄 It's just like Cosmic Bowling...such bull 🙄

Observation: Many of the same people (old ones, like me) who say string pins will ruin the game also say two-handers ruined the game. Well, which is it? Based on what the pros say, strings reduce the power player's advantage. You need to be more flush to carry. Why is that a bad thing?

Learning how to be more powerful and training for that is way different than taking away natural pin movement. 2 handers didn't break or need rule changes, it was just a way to get higher revs, which allows you to come in at a better entry angle.

If you were a 60 year old house (like Foxview) and spending 10s of thousands of dollars per year maintaining pinsetters, you might think differently. I would bowl on them before judging. Remember what everyone said when laminate lanes came along???

    • @fracturedraptor7846

The problem is laminate lanes don't create bullshit. String pins do. There are cases where the string knocks something down and it's quite obvious almost all the time that the strings mere existence messes with how the pins would normally behave.

Seeing 4-10s and 6-9s. So often, these strings are getting better but will never be the same. That slight change, changes everything, and ruins the game. Messengers won’t happen as often, and the weight of the strings will sometimes drag a pin down that would normally wobble.
    Absolutely trash 😢
