Sounds like they are hitting pumpkins. Sounds weak. Ive been watching PBA since 1987. The string pins limits pin action and just falls flat with me. They can barely break 200.
Well, the string pins used in these two "experimental" regionals are clearly much better than the awful string pins (with shorter strings) from a few years ago. Those were cringeworthy to watch, whereas these are only mildly disappointing. It does seem that there is less pin action overall, e.g., it's hard for a random messenger from the right side to take out a 4 pin on a high hit, which does happen occasionally on free fall pins (and is exciting!). Clearly, however, the best bowlers still rise to the top, so I would say the competition results are legitimate. Randy Pedersen has said that two-handed bowling, with its increased power (revs and speed), has put the "wow factor" into bowling. String pins, on the other hand, seem to take the wow factor out of bowling. Pre-1920, baseball had what is known as the "dead ball" era. Could string pins usher in the "dead pin" era?
String Pinsetters...what crap..they come to my center, I'm quitting and done with bowling and I have been bowling for 35 years now 🙄 It's just another way for the USBC to try and control high scores as they are harder to strike on. I think they are getting tired of all the 300s easily thrown now and are trying to throw something in there to lower the scores. All the 300s make people say bowling is easy and boring so they are probably trying something different to bring attention to bowling...this is not the way to do it 🙄 It's just like Cosmic Bowling...such bull 🙄
Observation: Many of the same people (old ones, like me) who say string pins will ruin the game also say two-handers ruined the game. Well, which is it? Based on what the pros say, strings reduce the power player's advantage. You need to be more flush to carry. Why is that a bad thing?
Learning how to be more powerful and training for that is way different than taking away natural pin movement. 2 handers didn't break or need rule changes, it was just a way to get higher revs, which allows you to come in at a better entry angle.
If you were a 60 year old house (like Foxview) and spending 10s of thousands of dollars per year maintaining pinsetters, you might think differently. I would bowl on them before judging. Remember what everyone said when laminate lanes came along???
The problem is laminate lanes don't create bullshit. String pins do. There are cases where the string knocks something down and it's quite obvious almost all the time that the strings mere existence messes with how the pins would normally behave.
Seeing 4-10s and 6-9s. So often, these strings are getting better but will never be the same. That slight change, changes everything, and ruins the game. Messengers won’t happen as often, and the weight of the strings will sometimes drag a pin down that would normally wobble. Absolutely trash 😢
It 100% affects the pin action
Even some of the most electric pros in the game couldn't make that exciting. It's like watching 50 year old pins on dead side walls.

Sincerely, a longtime fan.
The bowlers dont seem to be enjoying this. Seems they are there because they were told to be there.
