Im just gonna throw this out there. The FWD Dodge intrepid (I know, not a very Lovable car but making a point) came with a transaxle setup that had equal length axles (due to the setup) that made it have absolutely no torque steer. I know the intrepid's engine bay is bigger and the V6 engine is turned (like a RWD) but they fixed the Torque Steer problem a long time ago. As a fairly new 2018 GTI Autobahn owner, I decided to do a little extra research. Here's what I found: --On the VAQ-- All MK7.5 models (2018+), being that they come with the performance pack (PP), have this VAQ system installed by default. I have it in mine and it is phenomenal. If the car does not have the PP installed (for earlier models, say 2015 & 2016 here in the US), then it comes with an XDS system, which is not an actual LSD. It's more of a brake-vectoring system. Models with the PP have this system as well (the XDS+) that works in tandem with the VAQ LSD. --On the DSG-- The DSG system found in the 2019 and 2020 models has 7 gears. Earlier models (
Didn't the type R fix torque steer through clever suspension? I don't know all the facts but the system seems pretty complicated for what another company seemed to have accomplished without it.
MCmudkip p The gti has had this since late 2013 when the Mk7 went on sale in Europe for the 2014 model year. The latest type r came out in 2017. The cool thing about the type r is that it does this with a little over 300 hp. The limited gti clubsport s also achieved it at 300hp but came out even earlier in 2016.
So Volkswagen's finally developing tech honda was using in the late 90's? Edit: was talking about the atts system used in the fifth gen prelude SH/type R, Intended as a joke not that preludes aren't rad as hell.
Justin Brooks They’re just butthurt, they think all cars with a LImited Slip Diff is the same as eliminating torque steer. The Mazdaspeed3 had a diff similar to the older type r models, and that thing will try to throw you off the road. Same for SRT-4 Neons

The GTI is probably one of my favorite hatchbacks ever. It’s perfect in my eyes. My favorite thing about it though is how VW sells it. All 4 trim levels have the same engine. 230hp, whether it’s $25,000 or $33,000. Higher trims get more luxuries sure, but I don’t *need* a sunroof.

Actually the 8ms shift is fake, its just a rumour, the actual upshift time for the DSG and PDK trans are actually closer to 200ms, making the lamborghini gearbox (60ms) the actual fastest
My dad bought a Golf GTI when I was a teenager and I would borrow it every chance I got. I think it was the first time that I realize that not all cars drive the same, that some could be really fun, and that I wanted to know me about what made them so fun
8ms shift times are near impossible (soz). 👎🏻 It's probably the gear engagement time of the DSG transmission, or how long it takes for the shift fork to select the next gear. Actual shift times for the VW DSG are likely still quicker than an Enzo though, which is rad.
volkswagen have no problems with reliability. That is false. My dad has owner nearly 20 vws and NEVER had a problem with the engine with one of them. The only problem he has ever had with any of them is the chassis getting bent in his 2012 CC. It was a factory car meaning it drove around the factory, and some CCs had this problem with blah blah blah. I won’t bore you. But, he has never had a problem.
I'll keep buying my VAG cars because like every car out there they all last as good as you treat them. If you're smashing the gas ALL THE TIME and hard stops with the brakes then you'll see the dash lights come on more often. Also be strict about fluid changes.

@@williambonac8157 its not as bad, its not the same thing. Its still a mechanical diff, just electronically controlled.
Just go test drive one and see for yourself.

I admire your gift in being able to explain these ideas in such an expressive, detailed, absorbing but non-patronisng way. Always look forward to these episodes. Just, keep on going dude. Love your work.
I was so hyped when I saw a GTI episode. Then they said the three best parts which I have exactly zero. No DSG, no e diff and no mag ride.
I was hyped up until I read DSG. Long live the manuals!!!
You can get it as a manual here in Germany
Max Schubert same in England I think
Max Schubert Even if it had one, you won’t buy one. Same with most people.
DSGs are great, but they aren’t quite as engaging as a manual

I can easily imagine my mechanic saying "bruh, I won't repair this weird electronic diff thingy in your car, try your luck at the dealership, though you will pay half the price of your car for the repair" if this would break
Plus this transaxle transmission is strong enough that it's used in some 500+hp V8 Dune buggies.
Good to see your face again Jeremiah. I've grown to like you each passing video. Your camera presence has been getting better. Im likening your humor and realizing how smart you are and know what you're talking about. Welcome back and congratulations on 4 mill

Nice to know how its putting down that power through my turns :)
It's always been one of the best cars. Hence 8 generations

As a fairly new 2018 GTI Autobahn owner, I decided to do a little extra research. Here's what I found:
--On the VAQ--
All MK7.5 models (2018+), being that they come with the performance pack (PP), have this VAQ system installed by default.
--On the DSG--
The DSG system found in the 2019 and 2020 models has 7 gears.
Didn't Ford did something similar called revoknuckle with a Qaife LSD on the EUDM MKII Focus RS (yes that 5cyl from Volvo)? and that was 2009.
All the above is true, but this new system adds torque vectoring, while the ones discussed above only addresses torque steer
@@HotHatchHero Good to know. Thanks!
Yes it did! In the 90s! VW has just started using this technology recently, whereas Honda has been using it for 20+ years.
I wish I would have gotten a Golf R instead of my Kia Stinger. VW knows how to make a car that performs.
@Conor the life of a car guy! I like it a lot. I just lust for the improved tossability and better trans choices.

So Volkswagen's finally developing tech honda was using in the late 90's?
Edit: was talking about the atts system used in the fifth gen prelude SH/type R,
Intended as a joke not that preludes aren't rad as hell.
I thought FWD had been fixed since the Type R was beating some of the AWD hatchbacks not only on the track, but also in acceleration
Honda. What a joke.
@@ValentineC137 nope. Everyone forgets the engineering because they, wrongly, think its ugly.
What exactly was that? I dont recall Honda's having anything along these lines?
Justin Brooks They’re just butthurt, they think all cars with a LImited Slip Diff is the same as eliminating torque steer. The Mazdaspeed3 had a diff similar to the older type r models, and that thing will try to throw you off the road. Same for SRT-4 Neons
I like how they mounted the transmission to the exhaust manifold.
I just got a 2017 and I’m so happy they made a video about GTI

I was gonna post this almost same comment about not only the GTI my 2019 GLI 35th anniversary has all these goodies minus the dsg I'm an old school VW fan so gotta go with the 6speed manual. Love it and it's a blast to drive.

Coming from someone that has a MK7 with a sunroof, I’d honestly pay to have it removed. They’re nice when they work, but they almost always have leaks down the line
The_Goyfather if you have the sunroof I assume you also have the leather seats? Glad I have the S trim. I kinda wish I had the SE for the cool ass lights.
I went with the low level trim MK7 GTI. At the higher price ends I would have just gone with a used Golf R
AlerDaBear same. The R is such a nice car but it’s $40,000 new.
13Vex I have an S trim 2017 Golf Sportwagen 1.8 TSI and VWs base models give you tons of bang for the buck.
The writing in this episode is 👌🏻 great video!
3:52 there was a version of the Fiat Palio Weekend sold in Brazil that had a locking differetial while being FWD, its name was Palio Adventure Locker. But as the name suggests, the locking differential was only meant for light off-road applications and couldn't be used above a certain speed.

The mazdaspeed3 also uses a fixed half axle. Making each cv to cv portion equal.
Actually the 8ms shift is fake, its just a rumour, the actual upshift time for the DSG and PDK trans are actually closer to 200ms, making the lamborghini gearbox (60ms) the actual fastest
VW would NEVER lie!
Put a tune on it
the opel corsa opc nürburgring already had a fwd locking diff. vw was 10-15 years to late for that sry
How many vehicles the opel corsa sell? That's what I thought, not mainstream
As a German, I love how you always try to pronounce it in German :D this time it actually wasn‘t half bad!

"How GTI engineers realized that Honda paved the FWD path for them already"
Actually the GTI isn't the First fwd with a diff locker, Fiat in the 90's had the Marea wich had diff lockers in it's turbo charged version

So does this GTI finally come with the engine light on from the factory?
duh, how else would you know if it's working ;)
volkswagen have no problems with reliability.
Your presenting skills have gotten so much better. Good job dude!

give it 6mos, and then 6 days after the warranty expires.
Julian Navarro VWs are some of the most quality cars in America right now. Japanese cars are having alł sorts of recalls. Everyone else has gone down in quality and vw even had the best warranty in America for a while. We've had no problems with modern VWs. The problems of the 90s/early 2000s are over.
Saturn Designs lmao nothing is as unreliable as these new Volkswagens. Please look it up in the online forums. Don’t hear it from me, ask the owners. The auto transmissions always break, constant check engine lights, oiling issues that can blow the engine, etc. Japanese cars are still the most reliable cars you can buy, at least from Honda and Toyota. Recalls aren’t a good way to judge reliability either. It’s a free repair. Tacoma’s had recalls for frames and yet they’re utterly bulletproof past 300k miles.
@@josephsamsor1698 I agree Joseph - this cars are dream to have them brand new and in warranty but once they are out of warranty - you are screwed. Japanese cars are the best.
Saturn Designs that’s just not true, I’m on my third Audi in 15years and my daily driver is a mk7 GTI. I bleed VW Group. But, 100% they are not the most reliable car on the planet. They are the most comfortable car that is also very quick. And I love VW’s style. But just about any Toyota car is more reliable. They’re also slow and boring and not as comfortable.
