For context the Pocket Evo has a Snapdragon G3x gen 2, a chip that is overall better than the Snapdragon 8 gen 2 found in the Odin 2 Portal. Retroid Pocket 5 runs Snapdragon 865, the only chip after that one is Snapdragon 870 and then you'd jump to a Snapdragon 8 gen 2. I can see them maybe implementing the Snapdragon 870 in the Retroid Pocket 6, but if they were to jump to a Snapdragon 8 gen 2 then expect the devices to be much more expensive because of that. The whole purpose of the Retroid Pocket in my opinion is to be that bridge between mid tier devices and high end ones like the Evo and Portal, and they should keep it that way to retain that market of people they've already established with it. If it gets any more expensive just to try and get close to a high end device then you might as well consider spending a little extra and buy a Evo or Portal.

BUT, for someone who has the type of money and who is into consoles, I do feel like this is a very good device. The problem is release date because legion go 2 seems to be coming also. Only have money for one windows handheld. I'm just mentioning ayaneo 3 after looking at all their designs, it looks like the 3 is fine tuned from all past gadgets.
I think they should round the screen corners to integrate better with the design language of the rest of the device. As it is it looks just kind of slapped on there in a basic utilitarian way. Fine for cheaper devices, but not for an endgame device.
wrong. Its not even an issue lmfao Just say you dk what youre talking about next time. The pocket s has been around for a year and it performs as good and better vs my odin 2 in every scenario i test. There is no scenario anymore where the 8 gen 2 outperforms the Gx3, which anybody with a brain could have anticipated. Drive and software maturation is expected and has pretty much happened already.
Nah, your job could NEVER compare to mine, I saw a METEOR the other day and.......................................................................................
A bit beyond the Odin 2 as far as I can tell. I think that's because OLED screens can use less energy than LCDs, but the screen is bigger here so it kinda evens out.
Hey Techdweeb, just playing devils advocate here but with early bird pricing being over $600 for some models, why wouldn't someone just buy a cheaper windows handheld like the Rog Ally or the Legion Go. They are often cheaper than that.
Because that someone may prefer Android's UI over Windows. They may like the better battery life. They may like the controls on Ayaneo's handhelds better than the X or Go. They may like the OLED screen over the X or Go's IPS screens. Just a few reasons among others.
I know people talk about it being future proof. I heard the same about odin 2 pro Max. But, do these devices continue to pump out updates like updating the Android version for several years to come? If I'm not mistaken, that's what makes Android phones start running slower and then certain Android apps/games no longer being available on a phone over time - because they stopped providing updates on it. I'm wondering if the same is true for these Android devices?
Nah none of these are future proof. I think emulators have pretty good compatibility with older devices, and you'll never have them disappear from your device or anything (you just won't get updates), but as time goes on and new emulators are made with higher OS requirements these old android things won't be able to keep up (like a phone).
As much as I love all these options for retro handhelds. I feel like anything above 200 is stupid. Refurbished Steam Decks cost around the same and will give better performance for their dollar. OLED and 165hz is nice, but at $400 base price? Save up for an Ally and you won't regret it.
I want this so bad, primarily because it has full sized sticks for streaming.. if the Odin 2 Portal had full sized sticks it would be a day one purchase
They are great but not full sized which is more natural to people who are used to modern game console controllers. You sacrifice some portability though. It's all about the tradeoffs you can live with.
7:35: "Did anyone actually want a 165Hz screen on an Android handheld?" People who know what it feels like to play on original hardware, FPGA, and other very low-latency setups: yes. Yes we did.
Getting more higher end options is nice but I've said it before and I say it again: Where is the 4:3 aspect ratio high end device with at least a 5 inch OLED display? I own a Odin 2, Y700 with G8 controller and an ROG Ally as my go to 'big' handhelds and for me the 'new' powerful devices (Portal, RP5 etc.) are not really appealing mainly due to the glass front that I personally find ugly and impractical (finger prints, possible yellowing and cracking later on). I seldom use my Ally for Retro gaming as it is too heavy to be comfortable for longer gaming e.g. lying on your back and holding it over your face (plus when you get sleepy and it slips that hurts...I know). The ODIN 2 is still the sweet spot for that scenario. If you don't have a big device and you want one I can see the appeal though. Great dweebeo as always!
The SOC are very similar, the G3X 2 is an over clocked snapdragon 8 gen 2. Id imagine this has better screen, speakers, economics. With full sized joy sticks. If you compare similar ram/storage options. Its really not bad considering an $80-$100 price difference
Metal shaft joystick...wow. You can be rough with it. I always have to keep in mind to be more gentle with controllers as the plastic shafts will grind out. Now for the cap to be metal too, no more melty sticky caps. Tried to buy metal joysticks but they never fit. Best if the device manufacturer do it in the first place.
So, Tech-Dweeb, this or the Retroid Pocket 5?? I don't play games past PS1, so I know both are more than enough for processing power, but size comparisons and those screens would be so nice to play on.
If you're not going past PS1 there's no reason to get this other than it's BIG and more of a full-sized device. The RP5 is a beast for PS1, great screen, great controls, but it's a bit smaller. Very different devices in terms of the form factor but both more than capable for your needs.
Honestly, this is a pretty intriguing device for me. I opted for an RP Mini instead of an RP5, so I still don’t have a premium 16:9 emulation handheld. I’ve got an Ayaneo Pocket Micro on the way, but that’s really just intended to be my GameBoy Advance. I have to say, I’m quite tempted to pick up one of the more “middle of the road” models of this thing! My only concern is that I’d really want to be able to replace my Switch OLED with it, and it sounds like Switch emulation on Android just isn’t quite there…
@@TechDweebVery good point! With these specs, even their “middle of the road” options are best in class. Thanks for the video, I think you may have helped sell me on the 16GB+512GB model! (My wallet may thank you slightly less, but you know how it goes…)
Yeah, pretty much all these retro doodad companies have pretty poor warranty considering they're shipping them worldwide and can't afford to ship them back and forth to repair. You're kinda rolling the dice when you buy something like this.
@@TechDweeb TLDR cool devices but they are as is final sale. I was one and done with ayaneo. My handheld developed a crack while sitting on the shelf in its case. I was lucky with my gpd win4 and the battery almost exploded. The lucky part is I caught it bulging.
Would i get this? Kinda maybe.... I find the size to be a double edged sword to be honest. When you game you lose yourself with a gigantic screen!! But when you're done it's like "aw dang it, where the heck should i put this thing?" My gut tells me that even though this is portable it's still a stationary gaming device. Although the big battery gives hopes for gaming on the go. Idk I have the 556 and i feel like i can't get used to something bigger even though i want the odin 2 for example.

There is no scenario anymore where the 8 gen 2 outperforms the Gx3, which anybody with a brain could have anticipated. Drive and software maturation is expected and has pretty much happened already.
Day 2 of asking you to call terabyte 'ticklebyte'

Please do a best retro device of 2024. Thank you!
Great review! Im curious how the less expensive Orin 2 Portal will compare with this device.
it looks good but i have a rog and a anbernic android handheld loads of Linux handhelds do i need another
Nice! Hope you love it!
It has a very similar battery performance to my ayn odin 2 even with an oled screen and a larger battery
A bit beyond the Odin 2 as far as I can tell. I think that's because OLED screens can use less energy than LCDs, but the screen is bigger here so it kinda evens out.
Indeed...
It is an amazing Device...
Android Gaming Handheld...
🙃😁😎👍🧐
The Apple Brand Of Gaming Handheld devices...
The price isn't all that crazy if you compare it to similarly spec'd Android phones
Great point
Great video. 🔥
How does the size compare to the Ayaneo 2S? It looks to be a similar size.
I don't have a 2s so I can't compare, but I'm pretty sure they're basically the same size and shape, just this is the android version.
@@TechDweebI figured that but wasn’t sure as the 2s is 1200p (16:10) and this is 1080p (16:9)
It could be the same shell, but it’s hard to tell. 🤔
It's good for youtubers to make more videos We can enjoy!
but for prices.. it is crazy
26 hour battery life, OLED screen, retro vibes. Android efficiency. Those are the main reasons someone would want this for retro games.
Do we know if the ram is soldered down? I’m guessing it is
Steam Deck OLED has lower res and Ally X doesn’t have OLED. Pocket Evo has become my go to device to stream games from my 9800X3D/4090 and PS5 Pro.
THIS OR THE ODIN PORTAL. SOMEONE ANSWER ME lol I like the way this looks better and it has seemingly better ergonomics. Decisions, decisions.
I will be getting a portal to review, I don't have one yet so I can't say for sure, but if I was personally choosing between them I would choose this.
Hey Russ bestie, what’s your emulation station theme please? And how do you put bezels on flycast android? Giggledeegiggy device, me likey myself! 🎉
2:40 - I draw the line at "Root Beer" budget.
You're a dweebier dweeb than I
how does this compare to the Ally Z1 Extreme? I guess besides Windows (Ally) vs Android (Neo)...
Man I wish my job was same as yours 🥺
You can do it too! Grab a cheap device, grab a camera, and start making vids!
@@TechDweeb Well, now I know what to do next year!!!
The sticks on the retroid pocket 5/mini, Ayn Odin 2 mini are the perfect analogs
They are great but not full sized which is more natural to people who are used to modern game console controllers. You sacrifice some portability though. It's all about the tradeoffs you can live with.
okay, buying it right away
Does it come with pre packed games?
7:35: "Did anyone actually want a 165Hz screen on an Android handheld?"
People who know what it feels like to play on original hardware, FPGA, and other very low-latency setups: yes. Yes we did.
Not to mention, taking advantage of high frame rates with Geforce Now and Steam Link
PC is a better alternative for that
Good to know. I wonder if you'd be able to detect any difference in latency on this 🤔
Getting more higher end options is nice but I've said it before and I say it again: Where is the 4:3 aspect ratio high end device with at least a 5 inch OLED display?
I'm so with you. 4:3, big screen, OLED. That's what we need right now.
The question is how well does it stand up to the Odin2 Pro/Max?
7:29 How did you make Giants: Citizen Kabuto to work on Android device?
It's the PS2 version with Nether SX 2
@@TechDweeb Huh? I thought this game was only on PC, thanks!

So, Tech-Dweeb, this or the Retroid Pocket 5?? I don't play games past PS1, so I know both are more than enough for processing power, but size comparisons and those screens would be so nice to play on.
Odin 2 mini
I second odin 2 mini I have the rp4 pro and I bought the odin 2 mini because it's better
If you're only going up to ps1, I'd go with the rp5 because the dpad is on top
If you're not going past PS1 there's no reason to get this other than it's BIG and more of a full-sized device. The RP5 is a beast for PS1, great screen, great controls, but it's a bit smaller. Very different devices in terms of the form factor but both more than capable for your needs.
Looks pretty sweet, but I’ll have to save my pennies.
the corners on the front...they look well..sharp....and that would mean...uncomfortable. True?
I didn't find it uncomfortable at all, personally.
…..And I just ordered one 😅
Honestly, this is a pretty intriguing device for me. I opted for an RP Mini instead of an RP5, so I still don’t have a premium 16:9 emulation handheld. I’ve got an Ayaneo Pocket Micro on the way, but that’s really just intended to be my GameBoy Advance.
I have to say, I’m quite tempted to pick up one of the more “middle of the road” models of this thing! My only concern is that I’d really want to be able to replace my Switch OLED with it, and it sounds like Switch emulation on Android just isn’t quite there…
This definitely isn't a "middle of the road" thing!
@@TechDweebVery good point! With these specs, even their “middle of the road” options are best in class.
Thanks for the video, I think you may have helped sell me on the 16GB+512GB model! (My wallet may thank you slightly less, but you know how it goes…)
at last I can play Gameboy Tetris the way it was meant to be played
You'll need the next generation Ayaneo Ultra ($1800) for that
i would love this. But not for that price. Maybe theyll price drop it in the future
This looks so good that now i’m off to install Emudeck on my Steam Deck! A great ergonomic device I already own 😂
Excellent choice
11:59 What game is that?
Pop'n Tanks- it says it at the upper left corner of the screen
@@johnk.lehro.d.4105 missed that. Thanks! I need to actually play it.
my laptop will do just fine kind a like all in one lol
Aya neo is mandarin for no warranty.
I was cool with them just sending a new shell and I do all the work but they blamed me saying I over tightened the screws even though I never had tools on it opened it up etc.. I was lucky with my gpd win4 and the battery almost exploded. The lucky part is I caught it bulging.
If i can request for you to test Halo CE on the OG Xbox emulator that would be awesome!
Would i get this?
Kinda maybe.... I find the size to be a double edged sword to be honest. When you game you lose yourself with a gigantic screen!!
But when you're done it's like "aw dang it, where the heck should i put this thing?"
My gut tells me that even though this is portable it's still a stationary gaming device. Although the big battery gives hopes for gaming on the go.
Idk I have the 556 and i feel like i can't get used to something bigger even though i want the odin 2 for example.
Playing retro without a jack headphone is so odd... Like simulating a Spectrum with an iPhone. Both simply do not match...
I use low latency bluetooth earbuds on these things.
165hz = frame generation for 60fps>>180fps (even if you can't get all of frames), 30fps>>120hz
Someone please show this man a Pelican case so he never calls those semi-firm foam cases "military" and "hard case" ever again.
I want it.
Dang.... you could almost buy a retroid pocket 5 and a refurbed steam deck for just one of these lol. Thats probably what I'd do instead. It looks nice though, just a little high for the limitations android currently presents on handhelds outside of Emulation.
Is Switch emulation really stalled? or is it just something that content creatos say to wipe their hands? There are new emulators and updates weekly lol.
It's moving VERY slowly. Not looking to wipe my hands, I just don't want to say 'get this for switch' when we are a long way off from easy efficient switch emulation with perfect compatibility.
Could i run star dew on this?
Yup!
@ sold. Thanks dude keep up ur vids :)
It would be cool to know how well external controllers work in docked mode. The only reason I haven't picked up an android handheld is the notoriously bad input lag they tend to have
I've only had noticable lag on Bluetooth.
I don't have any latency measuring devices but it felt perfect to me. It's bluetooth 5.3 so there should be no issues.
@@TechDweeb good to know! That might push me over the fence
ayaneo has by far the ugliest prices ever
for that reason alone i give this brand a wide bow!!
ps: Odin 2 still the GOAT!!
